  • Screen Cleaner and Zep Mold and Mildew Remover (filmed with Xacti CG10) Happy Holidays! This is a little bit different than a tech and gadget review. I wanted to talk about a couple of general quick solutions to 2 different types of common household issues. -The first general cleaning issue is wiping clean electronic surfaces like on those LCD TV screens and monitors. And also on portable electronic screens like on mp3/mp4, portable DVD screens, etc... I found a generic product simply called "Screen Cleaner". (Not a glass cleaner.) I used it on all the above mentioned surfaces and found it to be a good/safe cleaning solution for most of those electronic surfaces. And it was cheap. (Ocean State Job Lot: $5 [Cleaning Solution Bottle and Cloth]) -And the second issue usually around the home is getting rid of tough stains typically found in/around showers and sinks. And that's hard water stains, mildew stains and mold. I found a product called ZEP Mold and Mildew Remover. And it works! (It pretty much removed those stains...) I applied it directly onto the surfaces and waited overnight and rinsed. Some areas required repeat treatment, but all without having to scrub. (Home Depot: ZEP $1.50/ a bottle) Hope this help you guys ring in the new year with cleaner TV and computer monitor screens (and shower stalls and sinks!)

  • Zero Blight/Mildew on squash w/ Horsetail/Equisetum I'm visiting Brian Kerkvliet, of Inspiration Farm in Bellingham, Washington. The video starts with me eating some of Brain's blueberries - which are extra good! In hindsight, I think it is because berries generally taste better when you don't water them. Brian then talks a bit about scything for a chop and drop mulch. Brian has soil that is about three feet deep. On top of that he uses permaculture techniques to reduce his irrigation needs. He has not watered this patch all year. Filmed in august of 2010. We take a close look at the squash leaves. There is no mildew. The squash leaves look perfect. Brian then talks about Horsetail made into a tea to stave off powdery mildew and late blight (on tomatoes). And on grapes, summer squash and cucumbers. This is part of Brian's Biodynamic practices - which exceed organic standards. Music by Jimmy Pardo
  • Powdery Mildew On Flowering Dogwood - James Blake POWDERY MILDEW ON FLOWERING DOGWOOD Hi, I'm James Blake, Director of the Clemson ExtensionHome & Garden Information Center. Today we're looking at powdery mildew on dogwood. We're in the South Carolina Botanical Garden on the campus of Clemson University back in front of a dogwood that we visited just six weeks ago that was severely infected with the disease known as spot anthracnose. Today it is severely infected with another disease known as powdery mildew. In the southeast, powdery mildew on dogwood is known to be caused by two different fungi, Microsphaera and Phyllactinia. There are many powdery mildew diseases on many of the different plants that we grow but they dont go back and forth across the different species. They are generally host specific. The disease gets its name from this white, powdery-like growth that is on the upper leaf surfaces and the young shoots. This white material consists of the fungus body, the mycelium, and the numerous spores that it produces that are easily spread by the wind. Young leaves with severe infection can be stunted and deformed. Older leaves may have just a purplish discoloration on the upper leaf surface. In the case of severe infection you may also see some dead spots on the leaves or some marginal browning. Early leaf drop may also occur. Favorable conditions for this disease are warm days, cool nights and high humidity. In the fall, these fungi produce over-wintering structures that survive the cold temperatures and are ...

These endophytic fungi are distinguished from pathogens that lead to disease and reduce the fitness of their host plants Mutualism frequently leads to enhanced growth of the host.
