In the first part of the talk we will address the following question: How should we store data in order to effectively cope with non-uniform demand for data? How many copies of popular data objects do we need? Where should we store them for effective load balancing? In the second part of the talk we will address the issue of moving data objects quickly, to react to changing demand patterns. We will develop approximation algorithms for these problems. The first part of the talk is joint work with Golubchik, Khanna,Thurimella and Zhu. The second part is joint work with Kim and Wan. Speaker: Samir Khuller Samir Khuller received his MS and Ph.D from Cornell University in 1989 and 1990, respectively. This multitude of animals also attracts a lot of predators. Seeing animals from horizon to horizon is one thing, but watching them cross a river is unbelievable! With a little patience, you have the best chance of witnessing such a spectacular river crossing between August and October in the Western part of the Masai Mara. The growing pace of globalization has increased the level of human migration as individuals and families move from one country or continent to another in order to escape hardships or to seek a better future. The world's future stability will require the various countries who will lose and receive people to be prepared for this trend. In this interview, Cohen discusses how he and his colleagues tackled this problem by developing a sophisticated mathematical model that gives policy makers an better estimate of which countries and regions will face declining populations and which ones will grow as people move around the world. The United Nations and other agencies are interested in using this new approach, which is a departure from traditional population modeling and was supported by the National Science Foundation. Baby Hippo & Wildebeest - Great Migration Tanzania/Kenya NOTE: Park officials told us we would be shot if we interfered so all I could do was videotape this and share the story with you. More safari footage at /loracain. We went with the most incredible company to see the Greatest Show on Earth - the Great Migration: 2.5 million animals who cross Tanzania's Serengeti National Park into the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya. Almost 2 million are wildebeests (Gnu) who have to cross 2 rivers to find grassland. Watching them and over half a million zebras and gazelles spread across the prairie (it looks like it's been mown by the time they're through)makes you understand just a little of what the buffalo herds in America must have been like. We were so touched by this baby hippo and wildebeest. Narrated by LoraCain
