  • Craniosynostosis Treatment - affects 1 in 2000 infants - touching and inspirational story Learn more about Craniosynostosis, how it affects 1 in 2000 infants, the causes and treatment. Dr. Hoss at The Super Dentists has had the privilege of working with Brittany and a great team of doctors to help Brittany achieve the smile that she has always wanted. Read below for more information on Brittany and how much of an inspiration she is!!! Get to know Brittany: Brittany Turner-Brunton was diagnosed at birth with a rare form of Craniosynostosis called Crouzon's syndrome which caused the bones in her head, including her skull, to grow too quickly. Throughout her life she has gone through multiple life-saving surgeries, but says that if she had the choice, she would not change one thing about her life or condition. Brittany now lives in San Diego and has grown up to be a beautiful 21 year old girl who attends Sam Diego State University. She hopes to inspire many other children with various conditions to keep their chins up, and know that if she can do it they can too. Brittany says, Craniostenosis has made me who I am today, and I wouldnt change that for the world. Our son was originally diagnosed with Metopic Craniosynostosis when he was 3 months old and was considered mild enough at the time to avoid surgery. Unfortunately, his skull continued to grow in the wrong direction and surgery was now necessary to stop the progressive deformity and allow for proper brain growth and give his head a more normal appearance. He was a year old at the time of surgery.

  • 10 Month Old Having Some Sort of Seizure? This is a video of my 10 month old daughter having what appears to be a petiet mal seizure or possible Sanifer's Syndrome. This isn't the best footage of this, but it is all I have been able to get so far. Please excuse the quality towards the end and I start to get concerned and trail off... Anyhow, a few weeks ago she started rolling her eyes and fluttering her eye lids. In this video she is right in the middle of eating breakfast and having a tantrum which I know makes it look more like Sandifer's Syndrome, but she will also do this at completely random times and with no fussing involved (right in the middle of play, for example). Lennon has Metopic Craniosynostosis, but had a CT scan (without contrast) which showed to intercranial pressure. All opinions appreciated, I'll try to get better video as soon I can. And before you ask, yes, we have taken her to the doctor for this and, of course, she did nothing of the sort in their sight. Hence, me trying to get video footage. (The behavior I'm talking about happens about 1/2 way through the video, right after she drinks from the bottle, watcher her eyes.) Thanks!

  • Pediatric-Neuro Exam 6 month: Head Examination Head Examination The head circumference should be measured and plotted. This is usually done at the end of the exam because babies usually resent the restriction of head movement necessary to obtain an accurate measurement. Head shape should be noted and the sutures palpated. Craniosynostosis (premature closure of the suture) can cause a misshaped head. Bone growth occurs perpendicular to the suture. If one suture is closed, compensatory growth will occur in the remaining open sutures. Synostosis of the sagittal suture (the most common type of synostosis) results in scaphocephaly (a thin elongated head). Synostosis of the coronal sutures results in brachycephaly (a wide flat head). Synostosis of the metopic suture results in trigonocephaly (a triangular shaped head). The most common cause of a misshapen head is flattening of the occipit on one side and is not from lambdoid synostosis but is positional in nature (caused from the baby lying supine with the head turned to one side as a preferred position). It is important not only to palpate the sutures but also the fontanelles. The posterior fontanelle cannot be palpated after six weeks. The anterior fontanelle is often small by six months. Closure of the anterior fontanelle occurs between 10 and 20 months. The anterior fontanelle should be palpated while the child is sitting and quiet and it should be flat or slightly concave. A full, slightly bulging fontanelle can be seen with a child that is supine or crying.
  • Christina's Courageous Journey [Craniosynostosis] Christina was born April 1st of 2007. 6lb 3 oz baby girl. We didn't know at the time that anything could be wrong. When she was two months old her doctor (Who has since retired) noted that her headshape was off. He noted a few other things and refered us to be seen at ACH in Little Rock. He thought that Christina might have Apert's Syndrome. In the few days that we waited, we researched what Aperts was. When we heard that ACH would not be able to see us for six months, we decided to look at other options. Waiting that long for treatment was NOT an option. We found out about the Craniofacial Center in Dallas Texas. Three weeks later we were meeting with Dr. Fearon. He informed us that Christina had Bicoronal Craniosynostosis and likely either Muenke or Crouzon's syndrome. That was July 9th 2007. He told us that she would likely require 3-4 surgeries! Christina was barely three months old. We came back that following November for her first MRI and to see about when surgery would be. He told us then that her Metopic and right Lamboid sutures were also likely fused. Surgery was scheduled for February 27th 2008. The longest day of my life! The rest of the story starts in the journal. Start from the first post and read to now. I didn't create this page till after her surgery because I hadn't heard about caringbridge and I tried a Geocities page for it all but that didn't work out. Now we are still watching for ICP, Hydrocephalous and Chiari Malformation. This will be ...
