Malaria Lifecycle Part 1: Human Host The visualization reconstructs infection of a human child via mosquito bite, through invasion of cellular tissues including the liver and blood. All features are to scale, including mosquito, blood vessels, human cells and parasite. The visualization is the first of its kind to present live-behavior models, including the mosquito's bite technique, parasite invasion method, and patterns of blood flow.

Malaria Malaria is a vector-borne infectious disease caused by a protozoan parasite of the genus Plasmodium, which is transmitted from human to human by the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. There are four identified species of Plasmodium, namely, P. vivax, P. falciparum, P. ovale and P. malariae: P.falciparum being the most fatal one. The life cycle of Plasmodium inside human body begins with a series of a***ual divisions in liver and then red blood cells. The sporozoites, injected by the infected female Anopheles mosquito, are carried to the liver, where they undergo a***ual forms known as exoerythrocytic schizogony to form merozoites. When these infected liver cells burst, merozoites are released into the blood, where they invade red blood cells. After invading the erythrocyte, merozoite de-differentiates into a round trophozoite form. The young trophozoite or the ring stage grows substantially to form schizont. Finally, it undergoes 4-5 rounds of binary divisions during the schizont stage, producing 8-36 new merozoites that burst from the host cell to invade new erythrocytes, beginning another round of infection. This phase of the infection (erythrocytic schizogony) is responsible for malaria pathogenesis. The parasites multiply within red blood cells, causing symptoms that include symptoms of anemia (light-headedness, shortness of breath, tachycardia, etc.), as well as other general symptoms such as fever, chills, nausea, flu-like illness, and, in severe cases ...

Malaria Lifecycle Part 2: Mosquito Host An accurate visualization of the complete Malaria lifecycle, derived from scientific data sets, microscopy and published literature on the parasite's biology. Everything presented is accurate in scale, structure, and dynamic behavior of mosquito, parasites and human cells. The sequence visualizes the parasite infection inside a pregnant female mosquito. The camera follows the parasite as it has *** inside the mosquito's stomach, then invades her salivary glands.

Malaria An animation depicting how malaria infects humans. It enters the body from mosquito saliva in the form of microscopic sporozoites. Once it finds its way to the liver it invades hepatocytes (liver cells). The single-celled parasite replicates in the liver for a while until its cells are ready to begin the second wave of invasion. The cells (now daughter cells called mezozoites) enter the bloodstream and infect red blood cells. The parasite now uses the red blood cells to replicate. It bursts the red blood cells in intervals which cause the chronic, wave-like fevers, that characterize malaria.

Malaria Parasite Invasion in Super Resolution During erythrocyte invasion of Plasmodium falciparum, the localization of the rhoptry neck protein 4 (PfRON4) can be traced from a single point of fluorescence at the merozoite apex upon attachment (rhoptry neck) until junction closure at the completion of entry. Midway through this process, PfRON4 (green) forms a ring-like structure surrounding the P. falciparum nucleus (blue).
