Next amniotic membrane is placed on a bed of Tisseal glue in several layers (Morshirfar pancaking) and subsequently sutured with 10-0 vicryl to ensure adherance. Next, the conjunctival flap is advanced and sutured onto the cornea with 10-0 Nylon and the knots are burried. Lastly, two large amniotic membranes are glued over to help with comfort and healing and a bandage contact lens is placed. At the end of the video you see the ipsilateral eye in which a perforation from corneal melting required a sclerocorneal patch.

  • Blood clotting protein binding to a membrane Computer simulation of how a blood clotting protein interacts with a membrane surface. This is from a molecular dynamics simulation of the GLA domain of human coagulation factor VIIa interacting with a membrane bilayer consisting of phosphatidylserine (see Ohkubo & Tajkhorshid (2008) Structure 16:72-81). Factor VIIa is the enzyme that triggers blood clotting, and its GLA domain shown here is the part of the protein that allows it to bind to membranes. The red spheres are calcium ions tightly bound within the GLA domain. Note how the GLA domain initially encounters the membrane surface, then eventually embeds part of itself into the membrane. This detailed computer simulation and others like it from the Tajkhorshid lab at the University of Illinois have provided important new insights into how blood clotting proteins function in normal hemostasis and thrombotic disease. More recently, a study from three labs at the Univ. of Illinois has now shown that GLA domains bind to membranes via a combination of "phospho-L-serine-specific" and "phosphate-specific" interactions (see Tavoosi et al. The INION Membrane costs $150. It is just as rigid as a titanium mesh membrane; but unlike a titanium membrane, it fully resorbs away in 13-15 weeks. Therefore, a 2nd surgical procedure to remove the membrane is no longer required. The edges of the INION membrane are smooth, unlike titanium mesh's rough edges that cause tissue exposures that attract and trap bacteria that cause infections. The tacks are also fully resorbable and will not break due to surgical technique shown in the live surgery.   • Bostonian Membranes This video breaks down membranes, their functions, and how they work in the three different modes of transport. Using a "Boston" theme, we explained each mode of transport through the phospholipid bi-layer, played by the "BOSpholipid bi-layer". Membranes are semi-permeable layers around the cell which create a barrier allow for passage in and out of the cell. Molecules and messages are the two most important items moving in and out of the cell which maintain cell homeostasis. Membranes form from phospholipids into a bi-layer configuration and are insoluble in water, therefore making them great molecules to use in compartmentalization. Integral, or embedded, proteins act as the gatekeepers in the membrane and cell and regulate what molecules and messages are actually transported. Molecules move in and out of the membrane in three ways; passive, facilitated, and active transport. In passive transport, molecules move with the concentration gradient (from high solute concentration to low solute concentration) and without energy. Facilitated transport is similar to passive transport in the sense that it requires no energy and moves with the concentration gradient; however molecules are moved by first collecting in the top of the integral protein and then being pushed to the lower section. Finally, active transport requires energy (acting as a pump) and moves molecules from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration. As stated before, the ...

  • Reverse Osmosis Membrane Replacement Procedure For those of us who are kinesthetic and visual learners, this type of video can be very useful as a complement to written instructions. Often we add voiceover or an on-camera instructor who explains each step of the process. The video illustrates how the reverse osmos (RO) system membrane elements, end caps, interconnectors, stub tubes, and o-rings fit together. For demonstration purposes, the membrane system was assembled outside their pressure vessels on cardbard sheets to demonstrate how all the components fit together inside the pressure vessels. Following this we filmed the removal of the old membrane elements and demonstrated how to properly install them in the RO system pressure vessels. Following this we energized the system took readings with a barcode scanner system to make sure there were no leaking o-rings. This video was made to assist operators in performing the infrequent procedure of membrane replacement whose details could easily be forgotten. This was an old Osmonics RO system that had been in service for over 20 years. The building it supported was to be demolished in the next few years so my client wanted to make sure it kept making high quality purified water. This required replacing the 4" diameter membrane elements every 18 months or so.

The plasma membrane demarcates the inside of the living cell from the outside, serving both as the ultimate physical barrier and location where the cell transacts its business with the outside world. The study of the structure of cell membranes continues to be fertile ground for research for many biologists today; the idea of "Membrane Rafts" has only heightened interest in this area. The main focus of this three part series is to explore the concept of "Membrane Rafts". In the first part, we will examine what is popularly understood by the term "Membrane Raft" and ask why this concept was proposed in the first place. This requires an appreciation of the most dominant picture of a biological membrane, "the fluid-mosaic" model. "Membrane Rafts" were hypothesized in response to this model to account for observations of segregation of membrane components made in cell systems. Different proposals to account for the segregation of membrane components and many methodologies used to identify membrane rafts, including the pervasive detergent insolubility method, are also discussed in this lecture. This part is aimed at a general audience or for an advanced undergraduate-level student. See more at
