- Reverse Osmosis Membrane Replacement Procedure For those of us who are kinesthetic and visual learners, this type of video can be very useful as a complement to written instructions. Often we add voiceover or an on-camera instructor who explains each step of the process. The video illustrates how the reverse osmos (RO) system membrane elements, end caps, interconnectors, stub tubes, and o-rings fit together. For demonstration purposes, the membrane system was assembled outside their pressure vessels on cardbard sheets to demonstrate how all the components fit together inside the pressure vessels. Following this we filmed the removal of the old membrane elements and demonstrated how to properly install them in the RO system pressure vessels. Following this we energized the system took readings with a barcode scanner system to make sure there were no leaking o-rings. This video was made to assist operators in performing the infrequent procedure of membrane replacement whose details could easily be forgotten. This was an old Osmonics RO system that had been in service for over 20 years. The building it supported was to be demolished in the next few years so my client wanted to make sure it kept making high quality purified water. This required replacing the 4" diameter membrane elements every 18 months or so.

- Lipids & Membranes This course is part of a series taught by Kevin Ahern at Oregon State University on General Biochemistry. For more information about online courses go to ecampus.oregonstate.edu 1. Membranes are composed of a lipid bilayer and other molecules, such as cholesterol. The lipid bilayer contains two main categories of molecules - glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids. 2. Glycerophosphlipids contain glycerol, phosphate and one or more fatty acids. The fatty acids in the molecules of the lipid bilayer are either saturated (no double bonds) or unsaturated (contain one or more double bonds). Double bonds in biological fatty acids are almost exclusively in the cis configuration, resulting in a bent shape for unsaturated fatty acid. 3. Glycerophospholipids (also called phosphoglycerides by your book) are related to fats in having a glycerol backbone and two fatty acids, but they differ from fat in having a phosphate located in position #3 of the glycerol. Naming of glycerophospholipids is generally as "phosphatidyl-X" where X is the name of the molecule attached to the phosphate. Examples include phosphatidylserine, etc. 4. If there is no other molecule attached to the phosphate on the glycerophospholipids described above in #3, you have phosphatidic acid. Phosphatidic acid is an important intermediate in synthesis of phosphatidyl lipids, as well as fats. 5. Sphingolipids are molecules related to glycerophospholipids that are based on sphingosine. Sphingomyelin is a component of ...

For some reason YouTube is eating all my comments, so I'm posting a response to some questions here: The credit for the idea really goes the Hungarian bagpipe maker József Kozak. You can see two bladder pipes he made using a membrane reed here: The version that harriswhistles posted is much better than my simply demonstration. - Membrane Transport This course is part of a series taught by Kevin Ahern at Oregon State University on General Biochemistry. For more information about online courses go to ecampus.oregonstate.edu 1. Diffusion is a process in solutions where molecules move from a high concentration to a low concentration. 2. We break transport across membranes into two main categories - 1) passive transport (diffusion driven, so materials move only from high concentration to lower concentration and don't require outside energy), and 2) active transport (an energy-requiring process that moves at least one molecule from a low concentration to a higher concentration - this is contrary to simple diffusion). 3. Active transport moves at least one molecule in the opposite direction of where diffusion would operate (that is, active transport moves at least one molecule from a low concentration to a higher concentration). 4. ATP is a primary energy source for active transport, but there are other sources, as well (see below). The term 'pump' is used to describe the protein component of an active transport system. Pumps that move two molecules in the same direction across a membrane are called symports (or synports), whereas pumps that move two molecules in opposite directions across a membrane are called antiports. Pumps are called electroneutral if their action does not result in a net change in charge and electrogenic if their action changes the charge across the membrane as a result of their action. 5. An ...
- IBM Makes Water Clean With Smarter, Energy-Efficient Purification IBM has unveiled a novel membrane technology that stands to alleviate the growing shortage of drinkable water worldwide. Scientists at IBM Research, together with collaborators from Central Glass, the King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology, and the University of Texas, Austin have created a new membrane that filters out salts as well as potentially harmful toxins in water such as arsenic while using less energy than other forms of water purification. Today, one in five people lacks access to drinking water. According to the World Health Organization, arsenic-contaminated water has been a major health concern worldwide since the 1990s. Arsenic toxicity is cumulative; studies in countries where the population has had long-term exposure to arsenic-contaminated water show that one in 10 people who drink the water may ultimately die from cancers known to be caused by arsenic, including lung, bladder and skin cancer. Membrane filtration is currently one of the most energy efficient techniques for removing salt and improving water quality. But, conventional membranes used today are easily damaged by chlorine, which is commonly added to water to prevent bacterial growth that can cause health problems. Now, the collaborative research team has designed a new concept in membrane materials that combines resistance to chlorine damage and high performance separation behavior in mildly basic conditions, making it suitable for arsenic removal in addition to water desalination ...

- How to make a CPVC Membrane Pipe This video shows how to make a membrane pipe out of CPVC. The first I'd ever heard or seen of a membrane pipe was fenevadka's video of his membrane pipe on YouTube. So I set out to make my own out of some of the CPVC I already had around that I make pennywhistles out of. My first version worked somewhat, I had to hold the membrane tight by hand leaving only one hand to finger the notes. This video shows how I made my second membrane pipe, a much improved design. The pipework is all 3/4" and 1/2" CPVC pipe and 3/4" CPVC adaptors (T-joint, coupling, cap). I used 1/2" OD vinyl tubing for the mouthpiece, a piece of a Meijer grocery bag for the membrane, and some masking tape to create the bottom seal and to try to fix the pitch of some of the fingerholes. At the end of the video I demonstrate playing the pipe a little. The pipe creates a very clear, clean sound that reminds me of a clarinet or Scottish Small Pipes. The sound in the video sounds a little staticy but that is because the pipe is so loud that it clipped-out my camcorders microphone a little. I plan to make a "chanter" pipe specifically for this mouthpiece sometime that's actually in tune. When I do, I'll post a song. In the meantime, how would one make a pipe that's in-tune? First, let me say that I've not taken my own advice below on how to make an in-tune playable membrane pipe yet, but I have applied my suggestions below to making numerous home-made CPVC whistles in various keys over the years. Tuning is all ...

- FLARE - kinetic ambient reflection membrane FLARE is a pneumatic building facade system. The FLARE system consists of a number of tiltable metal flake bodies. An infinite array of flakes can be mounted on any building or wall surface in a modular system of multiplied 4x4 FLARE units. Each stainless steel flake reflects the bright sky or sunlight when in vertical standby position. When the flake is tilted downwards by a computer controlled pneumatic piston, its face is shaded from the sky light and this way appears as a dark pixel. By reflecting ambient or direct sunlight the individual flakes of the FLARE system act like pixels formed by natural light. The system is controlled by a computer to form any kind of surface animation. Sensor systems inside and outside the building communicate the buildings activity directly to the FLARE system which acts as the buildings lateral line. FLARE turns the building facade into a penetrable membrane, breaking with all conventions of the building surface as a static skin. www.flare-
