  • Biology: Homologous Chromosomes Professor Wolfe proposes two problems that have to be overcome during meiosis. One problem is that offspring have to have the same number of chromosomes as the parents, which means that the cells used in ***ual reproduction need to have half the number of chromosomes as normal somatic cells. This means that meiotic division has to produce haploid cells. The second problem is the sorting of chromosomes. Each offspring will have to have not just the correct number of chromosomes, but also all the correct types of chromosomes. These two problems can be overcome by understanding that humans don't just have 46 chromosomes, but 23 pairs of chromosomes. A diploid cell is a cell with two copies of each chromosome. ***ual reproduction uses homologous chromosomes, which are chromosome pairs that have the same genetic composition but are derived from different parents. Aim of the present studywas to assess any difference in the presence of meiotic spindle in patients treated with two different pharmaceutical preparations for Controlled Ovarial Hyperstimulation (COH) in IVF-ICSI cycles.Conclusions: The presence of the birefringence meiotic spindle was significantly improved in oocytes coming from r-hFSH + r-hLH treated women. This improvement could be ascribed to the LH effect in oocytes recruitment and maturation. Even if r-hFSH + r-hLH patients have significant higher percentage of birefringence meiotic spindle, no significant difference could be claimed for the pregnancy rate versus the r-hFSH ones probably due to the small sample size. Homologous DNA recombination occurs in all organisms and is at the heart of genetics. Since its discovery during meiosis, these reactions were assumed to occur randomly along the length of chromosomes, and only involved with gene crossovers. It is now well known that meiotic recombination is not the random process it was originally assumed to be, and controlled by highly organized regulatory systems. In addition, a form of homologous recombination has been discovered which is responsible for creating diversity in variable genes, and was recently linked to single base-pair substitutions in immunoglobulins. New allele formation may indeed be the key to explaining the rapid production of distinct breeds, but their presence in the genome has been assumed the result of random mutations. Therefore, the ability of the cell to purposefully edit genes requires evaluation. This video is a 64 minute seminar recorded by the Design Science Association in Portland, OR July 2003 ( ). This shows that there was no difference in meiotic spindle integrity in frozen/thawed oocytes (eggs) compared to fresh oocytes. Previously, the low success described in early published medical articles seemed to perpetuate the false notion that egg freezing would never become a reality. It is probable that some reporting clinics and IVF programs may have used suboptimal protocols that yield very low success rates and disappointing pregnancy rates. The concept and the demand for egg freezing existed but obviously a new direction of thinking was needed to identify the specific requirements for the freezing and thawing of eggs versus embryos. Fortunately, the medical and scientific team at the Frozen Egg Bank believed differently about the future of cryopreservation. The egg consists of a nucleus and cytoplasm enclosed in the vitelline membrane and surrounded by the zona pellucida, which is itself covered by a layer of loose cells, the corona radiata. The sperm passes through all these layers to reach the nucleus of the egg, and on penetration of the egg it stimulates the second meiotic division of the ovum and the formation of a second polar body.

  • Genetic Variability by Design New alleles are accumulating rapidly in living populations and cellular mechanisms have not been adequately sought to explain the intentional production of these changes. Homologous DNA recombination occurs in all organisms and is at the heart of genetics. Since its discovery during meiosis, these reactions were assumed to occur randomly along the length of chromosomes, and only involved with gene crossovers. It is now well known that meiotic recombination is not the random process it was originally assumed to be, and controlled by highly organized regulatory systems. In addition, a form of homologous recombination has been discovered which is responsible for creating diversity in variable genes, and was recently linked to single base-pair substitutions in immunoglobulins. New allele formation may indeed be the key to explaining the rapid production of distinct breeds, but their presence in the genome has been assumed the result of random mutations. Therefore, the ability of the cell to purposefully edit genes requires evaluation. They should actually be aligned tip to tip beside each other, in the same position shown right before genetic recombination in Metaphase 1 (But my Text I wrote about all the steps is stated correctly) ------------- About this video: I made it for a Biology 30 Project I did in high school . (Did it during my Christmas break. It actually wasn't really "work" for me, because it kind of became a short term hobby in a way.) Also, keep in mind that non disjunction can occur in different ways. My video is just an example of one scenario. How I made this video: - Got a piece of cardboard and taped it to the ground -Taped white pieces of paper on the Cardboard -got some plasticine -Molded the cells and what not - Set up a digital camera on a tripod facing down towards the cells - Turned up the exposure a little so that everything is brighter and looks "cleaner" -Placed a florescent lamp over top of the project -Performed the stop motion only in the dark so that the only light source was the lamp. -Put the videos on movie maker and changed the picture duration time. The rest is pretty much self-explanatory Ps My apologies for the bad punctuation.

Meiosis, however, requires two cell divisions because of the creation of haploid cells from the sister chromatids. Ninety percent of meiosis occurs in the first phase, known as Prophase I. In this phase, two very important events occur. The first is the formation of a tetrad through the process of synapsis. Synapsis is the pairing of homologous chromosomes, which form the tetrad structure. These tetrads create areas called chiasmata (chiasma, if singular), where homologous genetic material "crosses over," or is exchanged.
