  • Mayflower Wheel-Lock Rifle: NRA National Firearms Museum Curator's Corner Firearm can be traced to one of the earliest English settlers. John Popp talks to Museum Senior Curator Phil Schreier about the Mayflower Gun, a wheel-lock rifle brought to American in 1620 by John Alden, a Pilgrim aboard the Mayflower. Alden eventually moved further into Massachusetts and in 1654 built a house, where much later the rifle was discovered in a secret compartment. In order to be absolutely certain of the guns authenticity, the museums staff consulted Aldens will, where he names the rifle as one of his possessions. http

  • We Shall Remain, Episode 1 After The Mayflower Part 1 I do not own any part of this it belongs to PBS, I just love history. In March of 1621, in what is now southeastern Massachusetts, Massasoit, the leading sachem of the Wampanoag, sat down to negotiate with a ragged group of English colonists. Hungry, dirty, and sick, the pale-skinned foreigners were struggling to stay alive; they were in desperate need of Native help. Massasoit faced problems of his own. His people had lately been decimated by unexplained sickness, leaving them vulnerable to the rival Narragansett to the west. The Wampanoag sachem calculated that a tactical alliance with the foreigners would provide a way to protect his people and hold his Native enemies at bay. He agreed to give the English the help they needed. A half-century later, as a brutal war flared between the English colonists and a confederation of New England Indians, the wisdom of Massasoit's diplomatic gamble seemed less clear. Five decades of English immigration, mistreatment, lethal epidemics, and widespread environmental degradation had brought the Indians and their way of life to the brink of disaster. Led by Metacom, Massasoit's son, the Wampanoag and their Native allies fought back against the English, nearly pushing them into the sea.

  • 5029 & 60019 hauling The Mayflower In what could possibally be one of the most unusual doubleheading in the history of mainline steam. 5029 Nunney Castle and 60019 Bittern team up hauling The Mayflower London to Plymouth and back. Ironically both engines are owned by multi millionaire businessman Jeremy Hoskins. 60019 hauled the run from London all the way to Taunton unusually carrying its second tender for extra water supply. At Taunton 5029 was attached to the front and headed on from there to Plymouth, then back to Taunton were it detached. Starting off at Creech St Michael as Bittern approaches Taunton having just been transfered from the Berks & Hants line. It will then have 5029 at the front. The second scene captures the unusual pairing of a GWR Castle and a LNER A4 at Wellington Bank. After Wellington comes Dainton bank, as the duo easily attack the steep summit hauling the 12 coach load. Strangely only up to 12 people where in the field at Dainton, usually a crowded field! The return working begins at Hemerdon Bank as the pair attack the fierce 1 in 42 section out of Plymouth, the Castle obviously sounding the loudest with its single chimney and 4 cylinder beats. Reports of tresspassing had allegedly taken place at Beam Bridge, so my potential of getting a good thrashing shot at Burlescombe was thworted as a red signal slows up and stops the service from going further. After about 5 mins of being held up 5029 and 60019 slowly creep away towards Whiteball tunnel nearing the ending run.

  • Mayflower Compact Mayflower Compact -- The History and Impact. The Mayflower Compact is a written agreement composed by a consensus of the new Settlers arriving at New Plymouth in November of 1620. They had traveled across the ocean on the ship Mayflower which was anchored in what is now Provincetown Harbor near Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Mayflower Compact was drawn up with fair and equal laws, for the general good of the settlement and with the will of the majority. The Mayflower's passengers knew that the New World's earlier settlers failed due to a lack of government. They hashed out the content and eventually composed the Compact for the sake of their own survival. All 41 of the adult male members on the Mayflower signed the Compact. Being the first written laws for the new land, the Compact determined authority within the settlement and was the observed as such until 1691. This established that the colony (mostly persecuted Separatists), was to be free of English law. It was devised to set up a government from within themselves and was written by those to be governed. Mayflower Compact -- What did it say? The original document is said to have been lost, but the writings of William Bradford's journal Of Plymouth Plantation and in Edward Winslow's Mourt's Relation: A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth are in agreement and accepted as accurate. The Mayflower Compact reads: In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King ...
