World Malaria Day Did you know that it would only take ONE DAY'S worth of Pentagon funding to provide protection against malaria for every man, woman, and child in Africa for five years? Don't take my word for it - economist Dr. Jeffrey Sachs (author of "The End of Poverty") did the math. April 25th is World Malaria Day. To help commemorate this day, I decided to share some of the work I have been doing here in Bangladesh that have focused on fighting malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. Some of this might be a bit familiar (from previous videos) and the rest is either previously unseen or new footage. For more information on my work in Bangladesh, check out my blog: For information on Vestergaard-Frandsen and their long-lasting, tear-resistant, dirt-resistant, insecticide treated mosquito net, check out http My sincerest thanks goes to the staff at Vestergaard-Frandsen (especially their Swiss and Indian branches) for making this possible. Full Disclosure: Although Vestergaard-Frandsen donated several items for me to distribute to the needy as part of my project, I was neither paid nor required to endorse their projects. I recommend their products without reservation and encourage others to look for charities that distribute products by Vestergaard-Frandsen (such as PermaNet). Malaria Disease Transmission and Prevention 1944 This was clipped from the English version of the 1944 film, What is Disease? , from the United States Information Service. The film was produced by the Disney Corporation. Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. People with malaria often experience fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Left untreated, they may develop severe complications and die. Each year 350-500 million cases of malaria occur worldwide, and over one million people die, most of them young children in sub-Saharan Africa. This sometimes fatal disease can be prevented and cured. Bednets, insecticides, and antimalarial drugs are effective tools to fight malaria in areas where it is transmitted. For more information, go to the World Health Organization's website at www.who.int
GOOD Transparency: Malaria Nearly 3 billion people are at risk of infection with the Plasmodium vivax parasite, which causes malaria. That's almost half of humanity. There are 1 million malaria deaths each year. Many people don't know how bad it is—or how much progress we can make if we support solutions now.

The Malaria Awareness Campaign, GlaxoSmithKline Travel Health The Malaria Awareness Campaign has launched an initiative with naturalist Steve Backshall to show people how to correctly apply insect repellent and prevent mosquito bites. The UK is one of the biggest importers of malaria in Europe(1) and the latest figures from the Health Protection Agency indicate a slight increase (9%) in cases of the disease in UK travellers(2) . In light of this, Steve who has contracted malaria, is urging everyone to be more malaria aware. He says: Its easy to relax and take a carefree attitude when youre on holiday, but it is extremely important to take malaria prevention seriously. It only takes one bite to contract malaria and I know from personal experience how terrible the disease can be. Professor Goodyer, a spokesperson for the Malaria Awareness Campaign says: Bite avoidance is the first line of defence in malaria prevention, however, many people are unaware of the correct quantity of insect repellent to use or how to apply it correctly. Id advise all UK travellers to give Steves how-to film a couple of minutes of their attention as it could save their life. Anyone travelling to a malarious destination should make an appointment with their GP surgery, travel clinic or pharmacy for the best advice as far in advance as possible ideally six to eight weeks before they go. As well as using an insect repellent containing 20-50% DEET, it is advisable to take precautions against being bitten, such as sleeping under an impregnated mosquito net and ...

Malaria Malaria is a vector-borne infectious disease caused by a protozoan parasite of the genus Plasmodium, which is transmitted from human to human by the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. There are four identified species of Plasmodium, namely, P. vivax, P. falciparum, P. ovale and P. malariae: P.falciparum being the most fatal one. The life cycle of Plasmodium inside human body begins with a series of a***ual divisions in liver and then red blood cells. The sporozoites, injected by the infected female Anopheles mosquito, are carried to the liver, where they undergo a***ual forms known as exoerythrocytic schizogony to form merozoites. When these infected liver cells burst, merozoites are released into the blood, where they invade red blood cells. After invading the erythrocyte, merozoite de-differentiates into a round trophozoite form. The young trophozoite or the ring stage grows substantially to form schizont. Finally, it undergoes 4-5 rounds of binary divisions during the schizont stage, producing 8-36 new merozoites that burst from the host cell to invade new erythrocytes, beginning another round of infection. This phase of the infection (erythrocytic schizogony) is responsible for malaria pathogenesis. The parasites multiply within red blood cells, causing symptoms that include symptoms of anemia (light-headedness, shortness of breath, tachycardia, etc.), as well as other general symptoms such as fever, chills, nausea, flu-like illness, and, in severe cases ...

Malaria vaccine trials for Kenya Scientists involved in the trial of a vaccine against malaria say they are optimistic they can defeat the disease. Early tests of the vaccine showed it could provide complete protection for some people. The scientists have now launched trials in Kenya to see if the vaccine is as effective in the wider population. There are over 300 million cases of malaria around the world each year and it claims more than one million lives. More than 90 per cent of cases are reported in sub-Saharan Africa, where it is the main cause of death and a major threat to children. There is currently no effective vaccine against the disease. A malaria vaccine has eluded scientists not least because the parasite which carries the disease evolves rapidly and can become resistant to drugs. To mark World Malaria Day,Al Jazeera's Catherine Soi reports from Siaya in western Kenya, part of Africa's so-called malaria belt, where doctors are conducting trials for a vaccine that promises to eradicate the disease once and for all.
