  • Chicago's Christmas Tree Ship USCGS Mackinaw Arrives at Navy Pier - Song by Lee Murdock Lee Murdock performs the song he wrote to celebrate a new Chicago holiday tradition, and a community service project of the US Coast Guard and concerned Chicago citizens. The story of the Rouse Simmons, Chicago's Christmas tree Schooner, has gained notoriety through a number of books and via Lee Murdock's song and annual Christmas Ship Concert. Remembering that tradition, members of Chicago's maritime community approached the US Coast Guard in the year 2000, and arranged for the US Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, affectionately nicknamed "Mighty Mack" to dock at Chicago's Navy Pier on the first weekend of December 2000, with a load of about 500 fresh-cut Christmas trees. The year 2005 was the last year of service for the Mighty Mac, a large and powerful icebreaking cutter which went into service in 1944. In honor of her years of faithful service, Lee Murdock wrote this song, "When Big Mack Comes To This Harbor" to honor the iconic vessel on her noble opening voyage of her final winter season. The images in this video are taken from the archives of Chicago's Christmas Ship organization, including the US Coast Guard and perhaps a local news agency photo, to illustrate Murdock's song. Murdock recorded this song in his book/CD "Christmas Goes to Sea" which is available from his web site,

  • Limousine in Mackinaw Bridge Opening Ceremony 1952/56 CHRYSLER "Imperial Parade Phaeton" Used by President Dwight D. Eisenhower In 1952 Chrysler supplied custom-built Parade Phaetons to New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit for transporting dignitaries in parades and other special events. Built on extended Crown Imperial chassis, all three returned to Chrysler in 1955 to be updated with new 1956 "Forward Look" styling. Their striking appearance and frequent use by high-profile celebrities gained important exposure that enhanced the prestige of their production cars. Although the White House used this car, the Federal government was prevented from taking title because of its policy not to accept gifts. As a result, Chrysler retained the phaeton and it became known as "The Detroit Car" because of where it was housed when not in service. Frequently used by President Eisenhower, it was sold out of the Chrysler motor pool in approximately 1970 and today is the only one of the original three that is privately owned. The other two are still owned and used by the Cities of New York and Los Angeles. The car is currently (03/15/08) on display at the Peterson Automotive Museum in LA. • Mackinaw fishing Idaho style. Priest Lake, Idaho (part 1) We had a great late September day near my home at Priest Lake! Montana Slim catches his lunker at 4:21 or so...best catch of the day by far. I almost fell overboard trying to net it and hold the camera at the same time. Big enough to not fit in the net! We were trolling deep (downriggers) with single "0" dodgers, 18" of 15# leader and double glow green hoochies on salmon leaders towing frozen herring (cut the belly open for a nice blood trail) on the tail hook....the combination seemed to be working that day! All of these fish were caught in at least 140 ft. of water....Slim's lunker was wayyy down around 170 ft. The entire trip "was sponsored by Coors Light" :)....questions or comments?
