  • LUMBAR DISC HERNIATION-HÉRNIA DE DISCO -Hemilaminectomy is where only part of the Lamina and only a portion of the of the Facet Joint is removed to allow more room for the Lumbar Nerve. This nerve is usually compressed due to a progressive degeneration in the spine. The most common reason to have this procedure is due to severe Sciatica, numbness or weakness in the leg. Most likely if symptoms are not too severe other things will be tried first, such as physical therapy, rest, and anti-inflamatory medications. The cause of your symptoms, in the majority of cases, is a degenerative process in the Lumbar region of the spine whereby the Facet Joints enlarge, the ligament becomes thicker, and the disk bulges. When this happens, it reduces the space and compresses the nerves that supply sensation to the legs. In the operating room you will be given a general anaesthetic and then positioned face down on a special frame. An incision is drawn on with a special pen and the area is cleansed with an antiseptic solution. You are then covered in drapes so that only the incision area is exposed. An incision is then made through the skin and down to the spinous process. The muscle is moved away from the Lamina and Facet Joint and a retractor is used to hold it out of the way. The level is checkd by Xray and the operating microscope is brought in. Using a special bone drill, part of the Lamina and the Facet Joint may be removed. This leave the ligament which is removed in order to expose the dura and the compressed nerves ...

  • X Stop for treatment of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis by Dr. Shamie The spine encloses the spinal c***, which contains a cylinder of nerve tissues called the spinal cord. Normally, there is space between the spinal cord and the interior wall of the spinal c*** so that nerves are not pinched. However, as a person ages, the ligaments and bone that surround the spinal c*** can thicken, causing spinal stenosis — a narrowing of the spinal c***. The spinal cord and nerve fibers that exit the spinal c*** become crowded and pinched due to this narrowing. The X-STOP acts as a spacer that separates the spinous processes, portions of the vertebrae characterized by bumps that run along the spine. Spacing the spinous processes eliminates nerve crowding, releasing pressure on the spinal c***.

  • Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery for Herniated Lumbar Discs OR- webcast February 22nd at 10:00 AM EST From Roosevelt Hospital, NY Lower back pain is one of the leading causes of doctor's visits and absences from work for health reasons, and will affect many Americans during their lives. In most cases, lower back pain is caused by a strain to a muscle or ligament that supports the lumbar spine, and can be relieved through rest, stretching and/or strengthening exercises or medication. If conservative treatment has failed, and you still have severe pain 2 to 3 months after diagnosis of a herniated lumbar disc pressing on a spinal nerve, you may benefit from minimally invasive spine surgery, and the METRx Micro Endoscopic Discectomy procedure could be the solution for you. On February 22, 2008, at 10am EST, Dr. Noel Perin, an internationally known neurosurgeon at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City who specializes in disorders of the spine, will perform a METRx Micro Endoscopic Discectomy to treat a herniated lumbar spinal disc, which can cause severe lower pack pain. The METRx Micro Endoscopic Discectomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that can provide relief of this severe back pain with minimum surgical trauma, and a quick return to normal activities.

  • PRODISC® Lumbar Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) Surgery - The Spine Institute Santa Monica CA The Spine Institute in California has done more PRODISC® artificial disc replacement (ADR) surgeries than any other institution in the US. What is it? The FDA Approved PRODISC®-L Total Disc Replacement is an artificial intervertebral disc made from metal and plastic that is used to treat pain associated with degenerative disc disease (DDD). DDD is defined as discogenic back pain (pain resulting from a degenerated intervertebral disc) with degeneration of the disc confirmed by patient history and radiographic studies. The PRODISC®-L Total Disc Replacement is implanted to replace a diseased or damaged intervertebral disc during a surgical procedure called spinal arthroplasty. How does it work? The PRODISC®-L Total Disc Replacement consists of three parts: 1. Two metal (cobalt-chrome alloy) endplates that are anchored to the top and bottom surfaces of the spinal bones (vertebrae) 2. A plastic (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, or UHMWPE) inlay that fits between the two endplates The plastic inlay and endplates help restore the natural distance between the two vertebrae (disc height). The top (superior) endplate can slide over the domed part of the inlay, which can allow movement at the level where it is implanted. When is it used? The PRODISC®-L Total Disc Replacement is indicated for spinal arthroplasty in patients who: 1. are skeletally mature 2. have degenerative disc disease (DDD) at one level in the lumbar spine (from L3-S1) 3. have no more than Grade 1 ...
