Rudy A Message To You - The Locomotive (1967) Locomotive formed in Birmingham, England originally as a jazz band and by the mid 60s they were taking great influence from early ska music brought to the city by Jamaicans who were finding work in the industrial heartland of Britain. Locomotive were possibly the earliest white band to experiment with Ska, or 'Bluebeat' as it was also known. Although Brumbeat bands and artists such as 'Spencer Davis Group', 'The Move' and 'Robert Plant' were mimicking the blues of black America, Locomotive were looking more to the West Indies for their inspiration. Locomotive's later styles included Soul, Psychedelia and a fade into the prog rock era with Norman Haines eventually going it alone. This is the first cover of Dandy Livingstone's "Rudy A Message To You", recorded in the same year as the original in late 1967 and is B-Side to "Broken Heart" on the Direction label. It was recorded over a decade before the seminal Specials version. There were several notable band members such as Chris Wood who went on to join supergroup 'Traffic', Mike Kellie of 'Spooky Tooth' and Bob Lamb who was the producer for 70s dub reggae band 'UB40'. Soo Line steam train locomotive 353 barks up hill at Rollag MN This goes to show that a little engine can make a lot of noise! It is an ALCO built B-4 0-6-0 switch engine, built in August 1920, equipped with power reverse, Walschaert valve motion, piston valves, superheaters, and a 5000 gallon tender. It has two whistles, the larger one is a 6 chime and the smaller one is a 3 chime. The locomotive weighs 150000 pounds, and it has a tractive effort of 31200 pounds. It was built to operate at a pressure of 180 pounds per square inch and it continues to operate at that pressure today. WMSTR acquired the engine and modified it slightly; the superheaters were removed, and the footboard on the front was replaced with a boilertube "cow catcher". It also got a new coat of fictitious "WMSTR Railroad" paint. I am 17 years old and I helped in making this engine run for the 2006 show. Enjoy this clip, it is worth the loading time. Departing SP 4449 Steam Locomotive - Savanna, Illinois - 07.18.09 The Daylight Special, a private passenger train pulled by Southern Pacifics massive steam locomotive 4449 traveled through northern Illinois on 07.18.09 on its way from Minneapolis to Chicago. Pulling vintage passenger cars, SP 4449 ran the route of the former Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, now BNSF, through La Crosse, Wis. and the Illinois communities of East Dubuque, Savanna, Chadwick and Milledgeville. The excursion is one leg of a 5000-mile journey for the restored locomotive making its way across the country from Portland, Ore. to Owosso, Mich. for Train Festival 2009. The train left Minneapolis at approx. 8 am and was scheduled to be in Savanna at approximately 2 pm, but was around 45 min. late. It then made a service stop for water. Will arrive in Union Station before nightfall. The special passenger excursion is sharing the rail line with regular freight service so delays are possible. There are no scheduled extended stops, and roadways along the route are expected to be filled with chasers and photographers angling for the perfect shot of this magnificent locomotive. Southern Pacific Daylight steam locomotive 4449 is operated by the Friends of SP 4449, a Portland non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration, maintenance and operation of the former Southern Pacific 4-8-4 steam locomotive. This clip was recorded onto DVD from a Dell Inspiron 8200 (Pentium 4), running MAMEUI.FX.. in Windows XP - SP3.. This is definitely not my best performance, possibly because it was being recorded, but I have tried to demonstrate most of the common 'moves' and control actions... The YouTube 10 minute limit spoils the overall effect. This game ran on for a further 20 minutes before I ran out luck.. I used to be good at this game when it was originally in the arcades.! My appologies for the rather poor video quality - I have no idea what went wrong there.. When viewed on the computer screen "live" the images are perfectly clear and sharp.. Cow vs. Locomotive Narrow gauge train locomotive runs over a cow at the Conejos River Bridge, just north of Antonito, CO. Note how sharp-looking the cowcatcher is in the end of the video. Many YouTube users have commented that the locomotives are excessively smokey. This is only partially true - the smoke output is indeed higher when the train must brake suddenly (and inefficiently) to potentially avoid hitting somthing (in this case, a cow) - but this is a STEAM engine, and much of what's coming out of the locomotive is just that - vaporized water. Inside the Northstar locomotive Inside the Northstar locomotive (video below) As the red, yellow and blue locomotive sat outside the Big Lake rail maintenance facility for the Northstar Commuter Railroad Thursday, Oct. 9, Sherburne County Commissioner Dan Erhard was all smiles. A project more than two decades in the making, the locomotive is the second piece of concrete evidence the first being the track on which it rests that the dream is coming to fruition. About 12 years ago, we came through with the initial ideas for the Northstar Commuter Line, but talk really started about 22 years ago, when we started exploring all of the possibilities that could be used to move people into the city, Erhard said, bracing against wind gusts that howled down the track, east of Big Lake. This is a combined effort of more than 30 community groups, from the federal level to grassroots. Were very excited to see this locomotive here today. The MP-36 locomotives are from Motive Power, Inc. of Boise, Idaho. Traveling at top speeds of 79 miles per hour, the locomotives will move passengers along 40 miles of existing BNSF Railway train tracks between Big Lake and Minneapolis in less than 45 minutes. The Northstar Project bought five locomotives at a cost of $13.3 million as part of a larger and more cost-efficient contract with multiple transit systems across the country. This video was almost missed...I got out of the house on an excuse of a Job Interview and went down there to see if I could catch Train I-LADU-09. I missed ILADU09 by 5 minutes, but I decided to stick around since there was a green on Main #2...hoping that it would be a manifest with SD40-2's. As it turned out, it was this train, CNAAE08 with UP 6741. You can hear me groan when I see that is a plain jane AC4400CW. I can't remember what I said afterwords....the next words I spoke were.... ..."HOLY CRAP!"... This clip eneded up on the 10:00 news on Channel 2 KTVI St. Louis and Channel 4 KMOV St. Louis... Norfolk Southern Locomotive ON FIRE !!! January 23, 2008: NS 963, light engines, the 6th unit NS 6199 catches fire when the traction motor / armature fails and the roller bearing seizes. The 4th axle is burning away the traction motor, which causes a lot of sparks and flames to fly. Ties caught on fire, however smoldered out within a few minutes. Burnt shoes could be smelled over a half-hour period after the pass-by of the train. 963 consist of NS GP60 7125, NS Dash-9-40CW, NS Dash-8-40C, NS Dash-9-40C, NS RPU-6 864 Slug mated to NS SD40-2 6199. Obviously, I called this in and the train stopped short of CP Prescott after passing over the 79.9 detector announcing 'no defects' - 963 was moving within 45 minutes. Taken in Richland. Enjoy the fireworks!

I chased it from Oakland to Stockton, California, with a memorable and historical meet at Hearst with Southen Pacific 4-6-2 #2472 and Robert Dollar Tank Engine #3. Shay Locomotive leaves The Shay locomotive was designed to be used in a resource setting. Resource railways are one type of industrial line constructed to permit the removal of natural resources from remote areas to either processing centres or more centralized transfer points. The mining and forestry industries are two fields best known for their early reliance on railways to transport raw natural resources from remote areas. In the British Columbia forestry industry, railways were used to transport timber up until the 1950s, when they were replaced by logging roads and trucks. Forestry railways were comparatively short-lived lines that were built cheaply and frequently below the standards of mainline railways. The tracks were characterized by sharp curves and steep grades that matched local terrain and the logging company's limited budget rather than rigid railway standards. These lines served as feeders to more central loading areas where the rough logs that had been transported on simple log cars were loaded onto more substantial flat cars pulled by conventional locomotives or moved by water to mills for processing. www.sciencetech.technomuses.ca

Lunging locomotives finally grip the rails as CSX 419 stalls. PART I... Read story... CSX 419 & 411 with loaded coal train V605 stalls coming off the Salsbury Branch just outside Meyersdale, PA. The engineer informs the dispatcher that they have no sand. Watch closely as these two brutt AC4400 actually lunge, and bounce up and down trying to get traction coming up the steep grade of the branch to the mainline. With the locomotives in #8 notch, the hood doors viberate, and you can here the wheels grinding in the sand. It may be a slow video, but you will see what it takes to get this train rolling. The crew in the helper engines never left the comfort of their warm cab in the 19 degree weather. The crew, and some railfans hand sand the rails, and V605 backs up to get a second run for it, and finally makes it out. The whole ordeal to well over an hour. There is now a second clip (PART II) of the progress of the train heading west before it heads east to Cumberland, MD.
