  • Fano Flow Certain non-Newtonian fluids which are elastic display a large resistance to extensional flow. Such behaviour leads to fluid flow arrangements which are simply not possible using ordinary Newtonian fluids. These so-called Fano flows manifest themselves in a variety of ways. In the so-called ''tubeless'' syphon, a fluid can be made to flow up through an unsupported liquid column above the free surface of the liquid. One way to achieve this is by slowly withdrawing and raising a syringe from a pool of the liquid below. In the so-called ''open channel'' syphon, after initially commencing the flow of an elastic fluid from say a beaker, the fluid will continue to flow up the side and over the lip of the beaker for sometime despite the level of its free surface having fallen considerably below the top of the beaker. In this way the slightest spill will cause the beaker to partly empty in what is commonly refereed to as a ''self-syphoning'' effect.

  • New MagViz Airport Liquid ***ysis System Undergoes Testing This video is available in high quality -- see link at bottom right corner of playback screen. MagViz technology from Los Alamos sorts out liquids and gels. LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico, December 16, 2008—An innovative application of a technology first used for medical imaging may enhance airport security if Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists are successful. Los Alamos technologists have adapted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology from the familiar medical device to create MagViz, a new tool that distinguishes potential-threat liquids from the harmless shampoos and sodas a regular traveler might take aboard an aircraft. Funded by the US Department of Homeland Security, the MagViz system is a new, ultra-low-field MRI approach first designed for brain imaging, but with a unique variation. Given a container of something that shouldnt be on board an airplane, the MagViz system highlights the image in red for the security screening staffer to examine further. A prototype MagViz machine was unveiled today at the Albuquerque International Sunport, where it is undergoing field testing. Should the development process continue successfully, machines could be in airports by 2012. In an MRI machine, magnetic fields cause hydrogen atoms to line up and spin in a substance a bottle of water, a patients brain, an injured knee placed within its field. Eventually the atoms begin to wobble, falling out of rhythm. This wobbling of hydrogen atoms occurs in unique patterns for ...

(The other two are plasma and Bose-Einstein concentrates) As different forces are applied to matter, like heat, matter can change from one form to another: solid to liquid, liquid to gas, or solid to gas. Show Me Science: States of Matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas describes what happens to matter at boiling, melting, freezing, and dew points. The program also explains suspensions and solutions, as well as how these are taken apart. To order this and hundreds of other terrific educational titles, go to
  • Sounding Liquids: Automatic Sound Synthesis From Fluid Simulation We present a novel approach for synthesizing liquid sounds directly from visual simulations of fluid dynamics. The sound generated by liquid is mainly due to the vibration of resonating bubbles in the medium. Our approach performs automatic sound synthesis by coupling physically-based equations for bubble resonance with a real-time shallow-water fluid simulator as well as a hybrid grid-SPH simulator. Our system has been effectively demonstrated on several benchmarks [William Moss, Hengchin Yeh, Jeong-Mo Hong, Ming C. Lin, and Dinesh Manocha].

When their plot was discovered in 2006, thousands of flights around the world were disrupted and new restrictions were imposed banning passengers from taking liquids on board aircrafts. • Elementary Productions: Potassium Iodide and Lead Nitrate A petri dish is filled with a small amount of water. Potassium Iodide is added to the petri dish in one end, and Lead Nitrate in the other end. As the two salts diffuse, Lead Iodide is precipitated as a "barrier" surrounding the place where the Lead Nitrate was placed. This is because of a substance with a high molecular weight diffuses more slowly than a substance with a lower molecular weight. This rule applies for any medium used, in this case water. Another good example of diffusion is why flatulence is able to smell up a room in seconds. Hydrogen sulfide (the substance responsible for the smell) has a pretty low molecular weight, and therefore diffuses faster. This experiment serves as a good demonstration on diffusion, because of the difference in molecular weights, the insolubility of Lead Iodide in water, and the color of the precipitate.
