Taiwan's government says it has a plan in place to deal with large slicks. The Kaohsiung City Marine Bureau always has three containers of emergency equipment at the ready. The tools inside include chemical dispersants to break up a spill; boom curtains, to contain the oil's spread; and vacuums, for sucking it up. In the second, and final, installment of our two-part series of features on preparing for an oil disaster in Taiwan, we go to the Port of Kaohsiung, to find out more. Charged with critical responsibility Kaohsiung Marine Bureau section chief, Liu Zhonglin :" Following a massive oil spill, we have emergency contingencies planned. Typically, we have 3 containers of equipment on immediate call, at any time, with all the relevant tools. Our goal is a three hour response time, anywhere within our administrative area." Here at the Kaohsiung City Marine Bureau, these three containers are always at the ready, just in case an oil spill ever occurs. The first step to containing such a spill is to encircle it with a massive boom-curtain. Boom curtain encircles slick Supported by buoys, a boom-curtain is dropped onto the water's surface, and then maneuvered to encircle the spill; besides the buoyed type, there are also inflatable and foam-supported ...

  • My Twist Out after one week old twist hair update 2/6/08 last ingredients in Shine Mist- Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)- is the organic compound with the formula MeC6H2(CMe3)2OH (Me = methyl). This lipophilic (fat-soluble) phenol is primarily used as an antioxidant food additive (E number E321) as well as in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, jet fuels, rubber, petroleum products, and embalming fluid. A beta hydroxy acid (BHA)- is an organic compound which contains a carboxylic acid functional group and hydroxy functional group separated by two carbon atoms. They are closely related to alpha hydroxy acids, in which the two functional groups are separated by one carbon atom. In cosmetics, the term beta hydoxy acid generally refers specifically to salicylic acid, which is used in some "anti-aging" creams. Propylparaben- the propyl ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, occurs as a natural substance found in many plants and some insects, although it is manufactured synthetically for use in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and foods. It is a preservative typically found in many water-based cosmetics, such as creams, lotions, shampoos and bath products.

  • Signal Transduction This animation describes how growth factors bind to a membrane-bound receptor and triggers a cascade of downstream transduction processes. Cell behavior is governed by the effects of growth factors which interact with membrane-bound glycoprotein receptors that transduce the first message into a series of intracellular signals that in turn promote or inhibit the transcription expression of specific genes. Cancer cells adopt two principal signaling strategies between cells: endocrine signaling and paracrine signaling. Aside from growth factors, lipophilic hormones such as steroids and thyroid hormone are potent regulators of cell behavior, and may cancers are either hormone-dependent or are responsive to hormone therapy. In the prevention of breast cancer, steroid hormone ***ogs such as tamoxifen are used to mimic the action of the natural estrogen, eliciting a much weaker estrogenic response. This animation is general in scope, so it can be used in various different lecture contexts. • Update and Neuroleptics are highly lipophilic I'm doing better than I was. I also forgot to mention in the video that I still have a tremor in my jaw and shoulder. It's tolerable, but still evidence that the drug does damage or isn't entirely out of my system. I researched these drugs. They store and accumulate in your body even when they are not detectable in your blood or urine. It takes the body a very long time to process and eliminate these drugs, meanwhile they are causing physical changes in your brain. The body will always try to achieve a steady state (homeostasis) and when dopamine is blocked, it creates more and more sensitive dopamine receptors. This can cause psychosis and movement disorders. Also, these drugs make it impossible to relax and get proper sleep, which also causes psychosis. It is no wonder that people diagnosed with "mental illness" are more apt to deteriorate while on these drugs and that those who never go on them are more likely to get well again.

  • 8. Chemically Dependent Agriculture Environmental Politics and Law (EVST 255) The change from smaller, more diverse farms to larger single-crop farms in the US has led to greater reliance on pesticides for pest management. Other changes as the US food system becomes more commercialized include: increased use of additives, higher food prices, more water and energy consumption for agriculture, and more pesticide residues entering food through processing. Pesticides have also been used to combat insect-borne diseases, like malaria. The lecture provides an overview of relevant food, agriculture, and pesticide law, and covers the changes in pesticide use as scientific knowledge of a given chemical (ie DDT) improves. • The Death Of Legend, Bruce Lee this is my first video of bruce lee, "Death Of The Legend, Bruce Lee" im making more and putting more quotes what the greatest people thought about Bruce Lee and hopefully spread the truth and facts of Bruce Lee. Enjoy:) The ensuing autopsy found traces of cannabis in Lee's stomach, but the significance of this discovery is debatable. Some believe the cannabis caused a chemical reaction that led to the cerebral edema, but the coroner's inquiry refutes this theory. In fact, one doctor was quoted as saying that the cannabis being in Lee's stomach was "no more significant than if Bruce had drunk a cup of tea that day." Cannabis can also be consumed as a tea. THC is lipophilic and only slightly water soluble (with a solubility of 2.8 mg per liter),[46] so tea is made by first adding a saturated fat to hot water (ie cream or any milk except skim) with a small amount of cannabis, green or black tea leaves and honey or sugar, steeped for approximately 5 minutes. Dr. RR Lycette of Queen Elizabeth Hospital viewed Lee's death as a hypersensitivity to one or more of the compounds found in the headache tablet he consumed that afternoon. Although his skull showed no injury, his brain had swollen considerably, from 1400 to 1575 grams. None of the blood vessels were blocked or broken, so the possibility of a hemorrhage was ruled out. All of Lee's internal organs were meticulously examined, and the only "foreign" substance to be found was the Equagesic.
  • Combining Lipophilic dye, in situ Hybridization, Immunohistochemistry, and Histology Watch video protocols on JoVE - . Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is a scientific journal publishing video articles on biological experiments filmed at leading research institutions. JoVE is the first video journal indexed in PubMed. To see more of this protocol go to Combining Lipophilic dye, in situ Hybridization, Immunohistochemistry, and Histology This video protocol was filmed at the University of Iowa. Going beyond single gene function to cut deeper into gene regulatory networks requires multiple mutations combined in a single animal. Such ***ysis of two or more genes needs to be complemented with in situ hybridization of other genes, or immunohistochemistry of their proteins, both in whole mounted developing organs or sections for detailed resolution of the cellular and tissue expression alterations. Combining multiple gene alterations requires the use of cre or flipase to conditionally delete genes and avoid embryonic lethality. Required breeding schemes dramatically enhance effort and cost proportional to the number of genes mutated, with an outcome of very few animals with the full repertoire of genetic modifications desired. Amortizing the vast amount of effort and time to obtain these few precious specimens that are carrying multiple mutations necessitates tissue optimization. Moreover, investigating a single animal with multiple techniques makes it easier to correlate gene deletion defects with expression profiles. We have ...
