PY106 pre-class video for session 28 - Polarized light In this video, we discuss polarized light (specifically, linearly polarized light, which is also known as plane polarized light). We go over, generally, ways in which light can be polarized, and then we talk about how to handle situations in which unpolarized light, or linearly polarized light, is incident on a polarizer. Specifically, we go over how to calculate the intensity of the light emerging from the polarizer, assuming you know the intensity of light incident on the polarizer. Finally, we wrap things up with a brief look at how reflection and scattering can produce polarized light, and what polarized sunglasses do.
Playing with Real-D 3D Glasses Two Real-D 3D glasses are held in series. The back of the glasses acts as a linear polarizer, and the front as a waveplate, converting linearly polarized light to circularly polarized light. The first pair is held stationary. When the second pair is held behind the first, light from behind first becomes linearly polarized by the front of the second pair, then hits the two linear polarizers on the backs of each pair, eliminating all the light with all four combinations. When the second pair is held IN FRONT of the first, the light is first linearly polarized, then becomes circularly polarized and immediately linearly polarized once again.

2D Rayleigh-Benard thermal convection, contrasty version The temperature data for this simulation is normalized to the interval 0-255. From 0 to 123, the temperatures interpolate linearly from pure blue to 50%blue/50%green (teal). From 123 to 128, the temperatures interpolate linearly from teal to pure green. Then from 128 to 133 pure green to pure yellow. The rest of the spectrum is linear from pure yellow to pure red. This colormap helps provide a visual cue of an important feature of the flow pattern. While green occupies only a tiny portion of the temperature spectrum, look at what happens when that portion of the temperature spectrum dominates the spatial distribution of temperatures.

Blum 06 - Fun with an LED! In this mini project, an LED is controlled by the state of a photoresistor, a potentiometer, and a digital switch. The LED blinks on and off at a rate determined by the value of the potentiometer. When the switch is in one position, this is a simple on-off blink. In the other position, the light generates a sawtooh wave, linearly increasing in brightness towards the max brightness, then back down again. In either of these cases, the potentiometer can control the speed of the LED's variations. The LED's intensity is determined by the photoresistor. In a very bright room, the LED will be instructed to blink between 0 and it's max brightness. In a pitch black room, the LED will change state between 0 and only 10% of its max brightness. The brightness which it achieves varies linearly with the brightness level in the room. As before, this affects both the saw tooth and square wave modes.

Real-D Polarization (2) Real-D 3D glasses, used for 3D movies such as Avatar, work by taking circularly polarized light from the screen, giving it a phase shift to make it linearly polarized and finally with a pair of linear polarizers splitting the image so each eye sees a different image. Light from the laptop LCD screen is linearly polarized, therefore the effects of the glasses can be tested on it. When holding the glasses forward, the light hits the wave retarder first, giving the light a phase shift, making it circularly polarized and preventing the linear polarizers from blocking any light. Colours change due to imperfections in the material. When held backwards, the light hits the linear polarizers first and is extinguished at the proper angle. Also of note is that both lenses have the same angle of polarization, as both extinguish at the same time.

Bifringence and Polarization Art (using laptop light) When linearly polarized light passes through a transparent material, the polarization of the light rotates, as the tape acts as what is known as a bifringent material. The amount of rotation depends on the thickness of the material and the wavelength of the light. As such, when a linear polarizer is placed in front of the material, different colours will appear at different rotation angles. This is demonstrated in the video as tape is placed on a clear sheet in various thicknesses. The clear sheet is then placed on a laptop screen, which is a source of linearly polarized light. A linear polarizer is rotated in front of the sheet, and the colour of the tape changes with rotation, and at no point is all of the light blocked in the taped areas, as it should be with the polaroid sheet. NOTE: essentially same as other video, except comes out much clearer.

An Overview of MySQL Cluster (Dec 2010 Boston User Group meeting) This meetup's topic is 'An Overview of MySQL Cluster' by Oracle/MySQL sales engineer Bill Papp. Slides are online at technocation.org Now, more than ever, databases have to scale linearly to handle high spikes in usage, deliver 24 x 7 continuous availability and low latency. At the same time, many workloads need to maintain the data consistency delivered by transactional integrity. MySQL Cluster is the industry's leading real-time, write-scalable transactional database, combining 99.999% availability with the low TCO of open source. With a distributed shared-nothing architecture and no single point of failure, MySQL Cluster can scale linearly to meet the unprecedented demands of next generation web, e-commerce, and telecommunications / network services. Typical use cases in web services include: * User profile management for service authentication and authorization * eCommerce (customer and order data, payment processing, product inventory tracking, etc.) * Web Session Management * Social Networks (user profiles, authentication, real-time status updat! es, etc.) * On-Line Content Delivery (ie user data, content catalogs, subscription processing & management) * Near Real-Time Data ***ysis (using Geographic Replication to update MyISAM, InnoDB, etc. tables with real-time transactional updates from MySQL Cluster)
