- Computational ***ysis Methods and Issues in Human Cognitive Neuroscience Google Tech Talk January 14, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Bradley Voytek. There is a massive, relatively uncoordinated effort underway to map out the relationship between brain and behavior. Human neuroimaging experiments abound with approximately 30000 neuroimaging studies performed in 2008 alone. Most of the data from these experiments are ***yzed on an individual desktop or small, local cluster. Neuroimaging data contains information about neural activity in both time and space and can easily exceed 1GB per subject. In order to ***yze the functional properties of neuronal networks these data can be decomposed in a variety of ways (behavioral condition, principal and independent components, phase and frequency components, graphs and digraphs, etc.). This exponentially increases ***ysis time and database sizes creating bottlenecks in the ***ysis work flow. I will discuss a variety of neuroimaging methods in terms of the sources of the signals measured, what these signals actually inform us about how the brain gives rise to cognition and behavior, and how this information can inform medical diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore I will highlight how advances in computational processing have improved data ***ysis and discuss the computational roadblocks that impede research progress.

- Amanita Muscaria - Visual Identification - Victoria, Australia. - AKA Fly Agaric Music - Newgrounds - Badger. Here is an educational video for anyone wishing to identify Amanita Muscaria from other more toxic varieties. NOTE: Amanita Muscaria is toxic in HIGH DOSES. According to wikipedia, a fatal dose is 15 of the mushrooms, it doesn't specify the size of the 15 mushrooms, nor the potency, so it can be hard to get the desired effects of the mushrooms from a potentially dangerous dose. ALSO: I'd like to point out that Amanita Muscaria IS NOT a 'magic mushroom' in that it contains no alkaloids that are scientifically classified as Psychedelic Drugs. This mushroom contains the alkaloids "Muscimol" and "Ibotenic Acid". Ibotenic Acid being a brain-lesioning agent and Muscimol reportedly being 10 times as potent as Ibotenic Acid. If one dries the mushroom, a large proportion of the Ibotenic Acid will be chemically synthesized into Muscimol, making a dried Amanita Muscaria possibly more toxic than in it's fresh state. I've heard from friends who chef that the toxins can be neutralized by finely slicing the mushrooms and cooking at extremely high temperatures. I've never tried this though. Obviously I'm not responsible for anyone who is silly enough to eat one of these mushrooms and die. So if you'd like my opinion on eating these, don't do it unless your going to die of starvation! CHARACTERISTICS OF AMANITA MUSCARIA: It is very common to find these growing around Pine trees. Also look out for any raised pine needle lumps, often there will be a big ...

- Deep brian stimulation In neurotechnology, deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical treatment involving the implantation of a medical device called a brain pacemaker, which sends electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. DBS in select brain regions has provided remarkable therapeutic benefits for otherwise treatment-resistant movement and affective disorders such as chronic pain, Parkinson's disease, tremor and dystonia. Despite the long history of DBS, its underlying principles and mechanisms are still not clear. DBS directly changes brain activity in a controlled manner, its effects are reversible (unlike those of lesioning techniques) and is one of only a few neurosurgical methods that allows blinded studies.

- WTFU:Studies pt 2 Ok so this is part 2 of my studies, Lest jump in the way back machine to 2 months ago, Sunday, minnesota, singles ward, im at church, and im praying rather than lesioning to the bishop talk about events happening in the church. Im praying my ass off..... "god? why dose the book of mormon say the same things as the bible but has different doctrines?" Well it was close to something like that.... now i kept repeating myself for about the next 10 min or so and then BOOM the bishop slapped his hand on the podium in excitement about a dance or some crap and it scared me stiff. so i said my Amen and apologized for the mental interruption and began to bring my attention to the front of the chapel. then the bishop pulled out a book called "search these commandments". most Lds members knows what this is. but for those whom don't, its is a study guide to help level the playing field when studying to become a teacher, decan, priest, missionary and so on. (im not saying however, that it IS the study guide for becoming one of those listed previously, there totally different) so i went online and looked up all the difrent titles in the LDS library. so i grabbed the ones that seemed right Gospel principles, Family home eve, celestial marriage, search these commandments, and a few others. right then and there i got my answer. (after over 200 hours of reading and research) OK SO ON TO PART 2 Talking about god being a MAN

- Karen Hunter on Recombinant prion protein induces a new transmissible prion disease... Prion disease is a neurodegenerative malady, which is believed to be transmitted via a prion protein in its abnormal conformation (PrPSc). Previous studies have failed to demonstrate that prion disease could be induced in wild-type animals using recombinant prion protein (rPrP) produced in Escherichia coli. Here, we report that prion infectivity was generated in Syrian hamsters after inoculating full-length rPrP that had been converted into the cross-β-sheet amyloid form and subjected to annealing. Serial transmission gave rise to a disease phenotype with highly unique clinical and neuropathological features. Among them were the deposition of large PrPSc plaques in subpial and subependymal areas in brain and spinal cord, very minor lesioning of the hippocampus and cerebellum, and a very slow progression of disease after onset of clinical signs despite the accumulation of large amounts of PrPSc in the brain. The length of the clinical duration is more typical of human and large animal prion diseases, than those of rodents. Our studies establish that transmissible prion disease can be induced in wild-type animals by inoculation of rPrP and introduce a valuable new model of prion diseases.

- Visual skills in the absence of visual perception A patient with bilateral damage to primary visual (striated) cortex has provided the opportunity to assess just what visual capacities are possible in the absence of geniculo-striate pathways. Patient TN suffered two strokes in succession, lesioning each visual cortex in turn and causing clinical blindness over his whole visual field. Functional and anatomical brain imaging assessments showed that TN completely lacks any functional visual cortex. We report here that, among other retained abilities, he can successfully navigate down the extent of a long corridor in which various barriers were placed. A video recording shows him skillfully avoiding and turning around the blockages. This demonstrates that extra-striate pathways in humans can sustain sophisticated visuo-spatial skills in the absence of perceptual awareness, akin to what has been previously reported in monkeys. It remains to be determined which of the several extra-striate pathways account for TN's intact navigation skills. Current Biology
- Cooled RF procedure @ Mercy Health Partners Physicians at the Mercy Health Partners Pain Management Centers are the first in the Knoxville, Tennessee area to offer an advanced procedure for providing relief for certain types of back pain that have traditionally been difficult to treat. The procedure is an advanced form of radiofrequency (RF) lesioning, which uses no incisions and works by inserting a small probe through a needle that transmits a minimal radiofrequency current to the area at the source of the pain. The small radiofrequency current disrupts the individual nerve that's sending pain signals to the brain, and the procedure is repeated until each affected area is treated to achieve optimal pain relief. RF lesioning is less painful than more invasive surgical techniques, so only mild sedatives are needed for a brief period until discomfort subsides.
