  • Kathleen Mary Shepherd (1883-1984), Part I Music: Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring (JS Bach) Leo Kottke 6-And 12-String Guitar. You may wonder what happened to St. Barnabas Mission for Hansen's disease victims after Mary moved to Akashi in early 1936, McGill left for England to enter the Convent of the Epiphany to become a nun in April 1937, and Nettleton was unwilling to take the place of Mary, the founder of the Mission. The reason why Nettleton was hesitant to succeed Mary was, perhaps, that she did not have confidence in her Japanese language proficiency, being aware that war was approaching and that the Mission would be forced to discontinue sooner or later due to lack of funds and the Japanese government's new policy on Hansen's disease sufferers. The government passed a bill, in the Diet in 1929, to build national leprosaria throughout Japan to accommodate all the patients who were not in any institutions. According to this act, a national leprosarium began to be built two kilometers away from where Mary's Homes were located in June 1931 and started to accommodate patients in December 1932 prior to the completion of the three-year construction work. In July 1937, the Japanese-Chinese War began, and in 1938 John W. Wood, executive secretary, Department of Foreign Missions of the Episcopal Church in the USA, stated in an article of The Spirit of Mission issued in 1936 titled "Shall the Kusatsu Leper Work Continue?" that the Mission was in financial crisis and that Mary had depleted her private fortune to 30000 yen ...

  • Mary H. Cornwall Legh in Japan, Part IV Music: "Quand Je Suis Près de Toi (When I Am Close To You)" by Ross Edwards in The Swoon Collection III. Mary Nettleton (1898-1977) came to Japan for the first time as an SPG missionary and stayed in Kobe in 1926 when she was 28, but returned to England before the end of the year. Mary went to the Homes of St. Giles in Es***, to see Nettleton, who was working there, probably in the early summer of 1929, and Nettleton decided to join Mary in St. Barnabas Mission and arrived at Kusatsu in December 1929. Nettleton was in charge of the uninfected children housed at St. Margaret's Home. The Pacific War started on December 8th 1941 and Mary died at 84 in Akashi on December 18th, ten days after the commencement of the war. The UK was already at war with Hitler's Germany at that time, and Nettleton could not return to her home country, so she stayed in Japan during wartime. Non-Japanese residents were not allowed to stay in Japan as war approached and most were expelled around the end of summer in 1941, but it seemed that no one reported to the authorities that there was a woman from England, a country at war with Japan, working at Kusatsu, or the Special Higher Police cast a blind eye on Nettleton's presence, which is almost impossible to believe. Rosalind Barrington, another SPG missionary who attended Mary's deathbed, did not return to England, but stayed somewhere in Japan during the war. Due to lack of food, Nettleton, who was quite big, became very thin but kept looking ...
