Catzophrenia Catatonia is a syndrome of psychic and motoric-disturbances and dance steps. Catatonic is a syndrome of psychic and motoric-disturbances. In the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Cat Association (DSM-IV) it is not recognized as a separate disorder, but is associated with psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia (catatonic type), bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental disorders, as well as drug abuse and/or overdose. It may also be seen in many medical disorders including infections (such as encephalitis), autoimmune disorders, focal neurologic lesions (including strokes), metabolic disturbances and abrupt or overly rapid withdrawal from benzodiazepines. It can be an adverse reaction to prescribed medication. It bears similarity to conditions such as encephalitis lethargica and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. There are a variety of treatments available, and depending on the case, one or more drugs may be used, including antipsychotics and benzodiazepines. Cats with catatonia may experience an extreme loss of motor skills or even constant hyperactive motor activity. Catatonic patients will sometimes hold rigid poses for hours and will ignore any external stimuli. Cats with catatonic excitement can die of exhaustion if not treated. Cats may also show stereotyped, repetitive movements. They may show specific types of movement known as "waxy flexibility" in which they maintain positions after being placed in them by someone else, or gegenhalten ...

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus (a member of the retrovirus family) that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which the immune system begins to fail, leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections. Previous names for the virus include human T-lymphotropic virus-III (HTLV-III), lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV), and AIDS-associated retrovirus (ARV)
BeckyMcClain'sWorkersMemorialDayspeech4-28-10 Becky McClain is a 23-year career molecular biologist who has worked on cutting edge technologies in mouse embryonic stem cell, vaccine development, molecular genetics, neurobiology and developmental biology research within both academia and private industry. In 2002-2004 she incurred biological exposures at Pfizer, Groton, CT from a biological hood and co-worker using a Lentivirus on her lab bench next to her desk. As a result of requesting the Lentivirus exposure records through OSHA she was terminated and filed a lawsuit in 2006. On April 1, 2010 she won her federal lawsuit against Pfizer, Inc. for whistleblower and freedom of speech claims. Pfizer still refuses to give her the Lentivirus exposure records. The speech was given in New Britain, CT at the AFSCME Council 4 union office advocating worker rights to their biological exposure records for directed healthcare and public health and safety issues to be addressed to prevent work-related illness, to provide a safe work environment, and to protect the public's health and safety.
hiv virus Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus (a member of the retrovirus family) that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS),[1][2] a condition in humans in which the immune system begins to fail, leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections. Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk. Within these bodily fluids, HIV is present as both free virus particles and virus within infected immune cells. The four major routes of transmission are unsafe ***, contaminated needles, breast milk, and transmission from an infected mother to her baby at birth (perinatal transmission). Screening of blood products for HIV has largely eliminated transmission through blood transfusions or infected blood products in the developed world. HIV infection in humans is considered pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). Nevertheless, complacency about HIV may play a key role in HIV risk.[3][4] From its discovery in 1981 to 2006, AIDS killed more than 25 million people.[5] HIV infects about 0.6% of the world's population.[5] In 2005 alone, AIDS claimed an estimated 2.4--3.3 million lives, of which more than 570000 were children. A third of these deaths are occurring in Sub-Saharan Africa, retarding economic growth and increasing poverty.[6] According to current estimates, HIV is set to infect 90 million people in Africa, resulting in a minimum estimate of 18 million orphans.[7] Antiretroviral treatment ...
Origin of HIV, or Where Does HIV Come From? Where does HIV come from? For some of us who remember the sudden emergence of HIV into the popular culture and awareness of the US in the early 1980's, HIV appears to have come from nowhere. Rumor swirled about where it came from, how it came to infect people from all walks of life around the world. It's only now, after over 25 years of research and discovery that we can finally start to say with some confidence where HIV came from. Science. 2000 Jun 9;288(5472):1789-96. Today in the Cat Room at Homeward Pet Walking through the kennels at Homeward Pet Adoption Center today I was greeted by Wally - one of our shelter favorites. Wally is such an easy going guy that he is often found on a leash & harness, hanging out in our lobby office. It's often harder to get cats like Wally adopted because he is FIV+. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus that affects domesticated housecats worldwide. FIV is not typically fatal for cats, as they can live relatively healthily as carriers and transmitters of the disease for many years. FIV is only contagious between cats - and only as a result of a severe bite. As Laurel (our Cat Program Manager) mentions, Wally is definitely a lover, not a fighter! Check him out online: And visiting Homeward Pet's page to see what else is happening:
