Under a Safe Harbor agreement, a landowner commits to doing a "good deed" for endangered wildlife -- usually by restoring or enhancing habitats -- and is protected from future regulations that would normally be imposed on him if the number of endangered species increases. This simple regulatory tool, first invented by Environmental Defense in 1994, has resulted in more than three million acres of protected land across the country and protection for species ranging from the black-capped vireo to the Houston toad. And it's given us some of our most compelling stories.

  • Indiana Land Owner, Dick Thompson Facing Eviction Sells Land and is Leaving Corrupt 2County.flv TheAlexJonesChannel | December 16, 2010 By: Brad Edwards ALEXANDRIA, Ind. (WISH) - 72-year-old Dick Thompson's fight may soon be over — his land is up for sale. "It brings tears to my eyes, and I don't shed tears very easy," Thompson says of the mountain of support he's received. In recent days that includes a letter from Colorado with a check for $10 with "Land of the Free" in the memo line. Thompson faced eviction from his 38 acres in Madison County. The county lawyer told 24-Hour News 8 it's because Thompson is breaking too many rules, laws and ordinances; Thompson has no water, no sewer and no electricity in his recreational trailer that he calls home. Bottom line: You can't permanently live in a recreational vehicle. Now that the land is up for sale, it's clear his trailer won't be his permanent home. Two weeks ago Thompson told 24-Hour News 8's Brad Edwards : "I want to get the hell out of here right now — too much hate. I'm a country boy. I just want to be left alone." The story got tens of thousand of hits on multiple YouTube pages and quickly became one of the top stories of the year at . E-mails came in from New Jersey to Oregon, Orlando to Calgary. In a statement to 24 Hour News 8, the Indiana Sons of Liberty, a community militia, said: "It would be a great sight to see a thousand 'Don't Tread on Me' flags flying on Mr. Thompson's property." Thompson was on the verge of tears with gratitude, saying, "Thank you for the support."
  • DRBC Hearing Local Landowner Comments Its stating the obvious to say that strong opinions exist on the topic of hydrofracturing in PAs Marcellus Shale formation. Hydrofracturing -- commonly called fracking -- is a method of natural gas extraction that involves millions of gallons of water per well, mixed with chemicals and sand, which are injected deep into the earth to break up shale and release the resource. This collection of excerpts from the recent Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) public hearing on two gas-related Stone Energy permits -- one for surface water withdrawal from the West Branch of the Lackawaxen River, the other for approval of the Matoushek #1 drill pad site -- highlights a few of the diverse landowner perspectives. Some say gas lease money and potential royalties will allow them to continue to work their land and to pass it along to future generations. Others say the negative environmental impacts and water degradation will ruin their land and businesses, and ultimately cause them to leave the land they love. Surely, as exploration for natural gas within the Marcellus Shale formation continues, it will impact the entire community -- and arguably already has. Decisions made today may play out over decades, or perhaps further into the future. In all likelihood the process will involve legal battles and court decisions. In the meantime, in a small rural community such as Wayne County, PA, the landowners at the heart of the debate are also neighbors whose daily existence is intrinsically ...

Jesse Niesen reporting live from the site where 8000 pot plants loaded with 500lbs of mature marijuana buds were seized the day before as illegal aliens began to harvest. This video was taken after being guided to the remote location by an NTF Officer on a cell phone. The officer advised Niesen to go in armed as there was good reason to believe the growers, who were not caught, would return to the site... From the front page of The Union Newspaper: 8000 plants seized from pot grow Morning commuters were treated to the sight of a Huey helicopter swooping down on a large marijuana grow worth an estimated $1.7 million, off Highway 20 and Penn Valley Drive Thursday. The illegal grow initially had been spotted during an over-flight, said Nevada County Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Powell. A (Drug Enforcement Administration) airplane that was passing through our county spotted it first, said Sgt. Bill Smethers. We flew over and located it a week ago, obtaining GPS coordinates. Thursday morning, Narcotics Task Force members and DEA agents hiked in to attempt a low crawl of the garden, Smethers said. We'll sneak in on it, see if we can put anyone in the garden. In the pre-dawn darkness, fighting through thick manzanita, the agents came within 10 feet of the grow, he said. We could hear someone running through the brush, Smethers said. But we couldn't see him and never located him. Powell described the site as up the hill from the intersection of Highway 20 and Penn Valley Drive, near a ...
