  • Laminar Flow 2 This apparatus allows for the visual examination of a fluid undergoing laminar flow. Initially, within the apparatus, various colored droplets are suspended in a fluid (corn syrup) and all are in a state of equilibrium where the different fluids are distinctly separated. When the apparatus is rotated the fluids revolve in a controlled manner and the droplets seem to become completely intermixed yet still divided from the outer fluid. After several rotations the apparatus is then operated in the reverse direction. Since the Reynolds number within this apparatus is less then one, an almost complete reversal of the previous laminar flow is undertaken. The result is that after the same amount of rotations in the opposite direction, the droplets return to their initial, distinctly separated, forms.   • Laminar flow Swept-forward wing Aerobatic RC canard model glider built 1986 Long Reef This is a radio control aerobatic glider designed by Greg in 1986 with all symmetrical laminar flow wing sections and fuselage based on the NACA 66 series laminar flow airfoils. (similar to tuna fish and dolphin proportions, the fattest point is 66% back along the airfoil, more than halfway back unlike a traditional teardrop) It was built in 1986 after a series of 2 similar canards with all flying foreplanes and a similar looking tandem wing verification model for a commuter plane design. This was my first canard with vacuum formed fuselage and forward swept wings. Veneered Foam wings with soarfilm covering. The extreme low drag helps penetrate through strong headwinds such as this 30knot day at a south facing cliff at Sydney's Long Reef. The front all flying canard elevator is mechanically linked to inboard elevators on rear canard wing. Outboard ailerons. No rudder control fitted or necessary. Centre of gravity is approx 1cm forward of root of rear wing. Inverted (upsidedown) performance identical to right way up. It is nearly impossible to stall at landing speed and it is possible to pull full up elevator to slow it down for a vertical spot landing and still maintain roll control. Interestingly, even though the fuselage was only made from styrene rather than tougher ABS the monocote form was very resistant to hard landings and collisions.

At some point in the boundary layer, very close to the surface, the flow speed is so low that the flow becomes laminar. This is the laminar (or viscous) sublayer. What you will see is physics at work. The physics is simple: heat rises! After passing over the patients skin and dropping near the dirty floor, the waste hot air rises--overpowering the ultra- clean downward air current of laminar flow-- and then, having cooled, falls into the surgical site. Reducing surgical site infections (SSIs) is of the highest priority for hospitals, insurance companies, and national health initiatives. Not to mention patients and their families. Providing an ultra clean surgical environment with laminar flow has become the standard of care because it helps reduce hospital acquired infections. A study cited by the Centers for Disease Control revealed a reduction in SSIs from 3.4% to 1.6% merely as a result of laminar flow. Warming surgical patients, of course, is also the standard of care. Normothermic patients are far less likely to acquire a post-operative wound infection—64% less likely by one study (Mahoney, AANA J, 1999)—than those who arent warmed. The device used to warm patients, however, should not increase the risk of bacterial contamination. Fortunately, there is an [air-free] alternative.
