James Benning Q&A for "Segobi" - Part 2 Moderator: Adam Hyman Location: The Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian Theatre THE CALIFORNIA TRILOGY, by James Benning PART 3: SOGOBI (2002, 16mm, 90 minutes) The California Trilogy contains three films investigating the landscape around California. El Valley Centro (2000), Los (2001) and Sogobi (2002) present interrelated portraits of California's agricultural, urban and wilderness landscapes, each film consisting of 35 stationary 2-and-a-half minute shots. Initially screened in Los Angeles (at Cal Arts and USC) only as one five-hour epic, Benning is now willing to accept its separation into three evenings. He was present at Filmforum after the screening of Sogobi on May 20. Born in Milwaukee in 1942, James Benning studied mathematics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, a legacy discernible in the meticulously structured nature of his films including his highly acclaimed early works, 81/2 X 11 (1974), 11X14 (1976) and One Way Boogie Woogie (1977) which combined structuralist investigations of off-screen space, sound-image relationships and cinematic time with a sensitivity to composition, color, light and landscape, regional and popular culture and a distinctive, sometimes idiosyncratic interest in narrative. I got this from a friend of Bills and never thought about ripping and posting it, mainly due to the fact that its filmed from the back of the club on a tripod. There isn't any zooming in or out, its just stationary and is shot over peoples heads. The occasional waitress walks by serving drinks etc. But the sound is excellent and even though its not digital quality. I think its still a cool thing to have, especially considering that out of the 34 full video shows(bootlegs) i know exist the only ones to have surfaced are the ones i originally ripped over 4 years ago. Pat ONeill is Los Angeless true avant-garde master, creating beautiful, moody films with floating mattes, variable film speeds, ghostly layering, wry wit, and masterful soundtracks, all working together to form a fractured almost-narrative, a reflection on the lost spaces and times of our city. Among the films that we saw, Horizontal Boundaries, which ONeill has stated might be his last film. In ONeills films, boundaries fade; narratives collapse, and layers of images draw the viewer simultaneously towards and away from linear meaning. 15 laff VP :) A Vp, Eight toons, two 15's, one 26, one 31, and 4 100+ toons. We all won. I did NOT get these gags from a hack I worked very hard for these gags defeating 3 & 4 story buildings in Nutty River. What is an uber? An uber is a toon under 50 laff with maxed gags. There are three main kinds of sell ubers, two, three, and four track ubers. Two Trackers - A toon from 15 - 20ish laff with only throw and squirt. My main uber is an example of a two track uber. Three Tracker - A toon from 25 - 30ish laff with throw, squirt, and either toon up or sound. 25 laff is the lowest you can possibly be to get a third track. My toon "Dumbo" was an example of a three tracker, until I decided to move him up to a four tracker. Four Tracker - A toon from 34 - 39ish laff with throw, squirt, either toon up or sound, and either lure or drop. 34 laff is the lowest you can possibly be to get a fourth gag track. An example of a four tracker is my "Thing Three" (Of course she is not a REAL uber until she gets maxed gags) Some toons are above the max laff I have listed, that is why I added 'ish" at the end. The max laff I have listed is how small they can possibly be after maxing their suit. Some toons also have extra laff points from things such as fishing or tasks. There is also a "cash uber" which is a toon anywhere from 71 - 80 something laff. My cash uber has 84 laff points. She is maxed in both sell and cash and I accidentally got her an extra 3 laff from tasks, before I knew 71 was the minimum ...
