  • A Day's Riding: Poem by Charles Bryant A Day's Riding A Poem Written & Read by Charles Bryant The long afternoons still heavy with heat, the forests begin their turning: multi-coloured through shades of gold and brown. In the warm breeze the labouring crows ascend, calling to each other, their voices remote. Empty plains a-shimmer with somnolent mirage, the men drowse on horseback, horses half asleep. Nothing for miles on miles but hill and plain. The mind dreams; the senses merge; desire smooths the starker images in semblances where memory wanders unopposed and dappled. They seem to hear the movement of the sea, slow long rollers advancing up the shore as day wears on. Before they know it, they pace in silver moonlight, faces and thighs quite white, ghost riders of myth, into the night. * * * * * This poem was literally plucked out of the air. I was reading one of Conn Iggulden's wonderful 'Emperor' series and he was describing Roman cavalry riding over a great distance and I immediately saw them and felt what they were feeling, as if I were one of them. I just grabbed the nearest piece of paper and wrote out this poem, as it is, no rewriting, no honing, no intensive labour. To be honest, most of my poetry is written in this manner. Later Latin critics used to complain of poetry that, as they put it, 'smelled of the lamp' - that had been intricately and exhaustively mulled over in the early hours for the very best effect - and a great deal of the poetry written in my time (although not by me I hope!) has ...

Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. 7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh ...

  • Ecclesiastes 5 Holy Bible (King James) Ecclesiastes 5 1 Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil. 2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. 3 For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words. 4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. 5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. 6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands? 7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God. 8 ¶If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent ***ing of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they. 9 ¶Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field. 10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity. 11 When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the ...

  • God Given Free Will "Free Will" is not really the issue as far as the Word of God instructs. What the issue is accountability. On this page i will talk about what the Bible says about our wills and what is required of us. Hebrews 10:26 "For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins," The word "Wilfully" dissected: 1) voluntarily, willingly, of one's own accord a) to sin wilfully as opposed to sins committed inconsiderately, and from ignorance or from weakness. Now why would God warn us about sinning "wilfully" if we have no "free will"? Why that's "illogical" And why would the terminology be, "there remaineth no more sacrifice for sin"? That clearly shows that this is a person who had received forgiveness from Jesus through His blood that was shed on the cross at Calvary is not to be forgiven again. Here's another usage of that same Greek word for "wilfully" in the new Testament: 1Peter 5:2 "Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight [thereof], not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;" "Willingly" is the same exact Greek word (hekousiōs) used in Hebrews 10:26 Here's another similar Greek word. hekōn 1) unforced, voluntary, willing 2) of one's own will 3) of one's own accord 1 Corinthians 9:17 "For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation [of the gospel] is committed unto me." No "Free Will ...
  • A Sample of a Plyometric Training Unit The application of plyometrics to a training programme could present problems. Over the years I have come to realise that the number of contacts with the ground in any ONE training unit should not exceed 150. I have done sessions where I have gone above this figure but have noticed a loss of form and body posture. Plyometrics are meant to target the fast-twitch fibres so once the movements appear to be slower and laboured then those type of fibres are exhausted. I ask the jumper once he/she feels the movemenmts becoming laboured and slow to finish the exercise there and then. This film clip demonstrates a young heptahlete doing her first ever structured plyometric session. She is only demonstrating a few repetitions of each of the selected exercises but her overall floor contacts is approximately 150. Some of the exercises require an element of skill. Serita shows a slight in-balance in some of them but after a few sessions she will improve. I will monitor the early sessions and keep reminding her of the plyometric principles that underpin this strength regime.
