The residents of the Archipielago of Kuna Yala, San Blas (Kuna Indians) are the most truly Native American (in the sense that they have retained their original lands), their traditions and their culture. The Kunas look similar from Island to Island, however each village is unique. The Cuna or Kuna indios, the term "Kuna" is commonly use, have been settled in the San Blas Archipielago off the northeast coast of Panama since the nine***th century.   • Joseph Gramley plays Rhythm Song by Paul Smadbeck Rhythm Song (1984) PAUL SMADBECK Born New York State, 1955 Written in 1984, Rhythm Song is a work based on the principles of minimalism. This piece features single melodies that are split between each of the performer's four mallets. After an initial fanfare that runs the length of the marimba, the predominate melodies begin in a singular, almost lonely form. These melodies are soon intricately woven within the mallets and across the keyboard. They merge and evolve throughout the piece, creating intricate rhythms and harmonic textures that evoke the rich heritage of African marimba, gyil and balafon music. Rhythm Song lends itself well to collaboration, often being performed with a world-percussion accompaniment. It is also often performed with "one or more marimbas", as the composer suggestion.
