Willem van Otterloo - Intrada Willem van Otterloo (1907-1978) Intrada (1958) Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra Conductor: Micha Hamel Willem van Otterloo was a Dutch conductor and composer. He first studied medicine in Utrecht, then the cello under Orobio de Castro and composition under Sem Dresden at the Amsterdam Conservatory. While engaged as a cellist with the Utrecht City Orchestra his Suite no.3 won a prize offered by the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and its first performance brought about his conducting début with that orchestra in 1932. The next year he was appointed assistant conductor at Utrecht, and joint chief conductor with Carl Schuricht in 1937. In 1949 he became conductor of the Residentie-Orkest, The Hague, a post he held until 1973; his technique and keen feeling for orchestral capacity brought the orchestra to an international standard and he conducted it on numerous recordings (mostly in the 1950s), some of which received international awards. Admired for his reliable and sensitive performances in works by contemporary composers as well as the standard repertory, he also conducted leading orchestras in other countries and in 1971 was appointed conductor of the Sydney PO, returning to Europe in 1974 to become general music director at Düsseldorf. He was an accomplished composer; his works include a symphony, three suites for orchestra, Symphonietta for 16 wind instruments, Seranade (Divertimento) for brass orchestra, harp, celesta and percussion, Five Sketches for string orchestra ...

Gerald Finzi - Dies Natalis - Op.8 (I) - Intrada Dies natalis (Latin: "Natal Day" or "Day of Birth") is a five-movement work by Gerald Finzi, setting texts by Thomas Traherne, for solo soprano or tenor and string orchestra. Here is the first movement for orchestra only. I shall be uploading the remaining parts of Finzi's masterpiece in due course. "Surely no other composer sounds so British. Finzi distilled the influences of Elgar and Vaughan Williams into an instantly recognisable style. His music sounds even more traditionally British because of the nostalgia that brims over from it. It is the music of the end of things, of autumn, of the evening of the day, and the evening of life. Death had been a frequent visitor to Finzi's early life. He lost his father and then his three brothers in quick succession. The shadow of death returned to him in his 50th year in the form of Hodgkin's Disease, which he died from five years later. However, this is the music of fond farewells. Finzi is no Dylan Thomas raging against the dying of the light." - Bernard Davis. I took these images in the Derbyshire Peak District in early summer 2012. The mediaeval wood carvings and misericords (C15) at 0:32 and elsewhere are in the chancel of the magnificent Church of St. John the Baptist at Tideswell, also known as the "the cathedral of the Peak", for persuasive reasons. The Bower chapel contains perhaps the most impressive tomb (at 4:00) thought to be that of Sir Thurstan de Bower and his wife Margaret (about 1395). The recumbent alabaster ...

Intrada - Arthur Honegger (1892 -1955) for trumpet and piano Intrada - Arthur Honegger (1892 -1955) For trumpet solo and piano accompaniment Trumpet, Antonio Faillaci Born Oscar-Arthur Honegger (the first name was never used) in Le Havre, France, he initially studied harmony and violin in Paris, and after a brief period in Zürich, returned there to study with Charles-Marie Widor and Vincent d'Indy. He continued to study through the 1910s, before writing the ballet Le dit des jeux du monde in 1918, generally considered to be his first characteristic work. In 1926 he married Andrée Vaurabourg, a pianist and fellow student at the Paris Conservatoire, on the condition that they live in separate apartments. They lived apart for the duration of their marriage, with the exceptions of an attempt at living together in 1935, which lasted less than a year, and the last year of Honegger's life, when he could no longer live alone. They had one daughter, Pascale, born in 1932. Honegger also had a son, Jean-Claude (1926--2003), with the singer Claire Croiza. In the early 1920s Honegger shot to fame with his "dramatic psalm" Le Roi David ("King David"), which is still in the choral repertoire. Between World War I and World War II, Honegger was very prolific. He composed the music for Abel Gance's epic 1927 film, Napoléon. He composed nine ballets and three vocal stage works, amongst other works. One of those stage works, Jeanne d'Arc au Bûcher (1935), a "dramatic oratorio" (to words by Paul Claudel), is ...
Miklos Rozsa - Partita for Orchestra (1/3) Intrada Miklós Rózsa (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈmikloːʃ ˈroːʒɒ]) or Miklos Rozsa (18 April 1907 - 27 July 1995) was a Hungarian-born composer and conductor, best known for his numerous film scores. Tripartita per Orchestra, Op. 33 (1972) 1. Intrada London Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Amos Along with such composers as Bernard Herrmann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Alfred Newman, Max Steiner and Franz Waxman, Rózsa is considered to be one of the "founding fathers of film music". Rózsa was one of the most respected and popular composers working in Hollywood. He is also regarded today as one of the greatest film score composers of all time. In a career that spanned over fifty years, he composed music for nearly 100 films, including Spellbound (1945), Quo Vadis (1951), Ben-Hur (1959), and King of Kings (1961). In addition to three Oscars and 16 nominations, Rózsa remains one of the most nominated composers in Oscar history. He also received — but did not win — three Golden Globe nominations as well as an Grammy Award nomination for the MGM Records album of Ben-Hur.

Timpani Solo: Intrada from Triptych - Eldad Shiloah played by Joe Porter The Intrada is march like, though in varying meters, and is based on a simple 2 measure theme heard on its very top. It is essentially an Overture, much like the baroque orchestral overtures; grand in style, wide, "fanfaric", an almost independent movement incorporating fugue like passages. The performer has to play smoothly yet is required to make some tricky tuning changes (I've always been intrigued by the Tympani's melodic character) and to perform some nifty mallet work. The movement develops into what is essentially a 2- voice cannon leading onto a climax which brings the movement to a bravado finish. Note by Eldad Shiloah Audio by Eric Den Haan, Nick Goodman and Reyse Jaster Video by Jeremiah Merkl

Nutcracker Pas de Deux: Intrada - Andante maestoso (Tchaikovsky-Pletnev) Here's a fun video I made in summer 2011. My favorite part of this piece is around 4:14 and afterwards, though everything from 2:34 to the end is particularly fun :) The Nutcracker, Op. 71: 14a Pas de Deux: Intrada - Andante Maestoso from the second act of The Nutcracker. Transcription by Mikhail Pletnev. Sorry that there are some clicks in the audio. I discovered later that I can't record reliably using a 64-bit system due to the USB device drivers. Recording and editing for this was done in Audacity. From Wikipedia: The Nutcracker (Russian: Щелкунчик, Shchelkunchik) is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto is adapted from ETA Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King". It was given its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on 18 December 1892, on a double-bill with Tchaikovsky's opera, Iolanta.[1] Although the original production was not a success, the twenty-minute suite that Tchaikovsky extracted from the ballet was. However, the complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the mid-20th century and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in the US[2] Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions, in particular the pieces featured in the suite.[3] Among other things, the score is noted for its use of the celesta, an instrument that the composer had already employed ...

Concerto Grosso - I Intrada Concerto grosso for strings and harpsichord, Op. 38 (2009-11) - I Intrada - Composer: Geert Van Hoorick - Digital performance using Sibelius 4.1 and Kontakt Player Gold - Feel free to comment. For the most recent version of the score see This concerto grosso is inspired from the ones in the baroque era (fi Corelli), but the style is more neo-classical or sometimes even post-romantic. Characteristic of the concerto grosso is the alternation of tutti and solo passages. The harpsichord part is not concertant but adds an archaic touch. There are five movements: two solemn, energetic and fast outer movements, and two slow inner movements, with as middle movement a dance-like intermezzo. A note to possible performers: in general in the strong phrases of the outer movements multiple stops are preferably to be played non divisi; however multiple stops as 2nd crotchets may always be played divisi.

Intrada (Arthur Honegger) Andrew Bishop, Trumpet Ian Schwindt Trombone Wiedemann Recital Hall Wichita State University May 8, 1995 The video submissions from this recital represent the very earliest undergraduate examples I'll have uploaded onto youtube. This was a "fun" recital that Ian and I gave at the end of the school year in 1995. It was enjoyable in the sense that there wasn't a whole lot of pressure as a "degree recital" (I wouldn't give my Junior Recital until the next year) might have presented. The pieces I picked were things I had worked on recently, or were interested in performing. As for Ian's musical selections...well, I can't speak for him. Hahaha. As you can see below the program was, if nothing else, very eclectic. I was only going to upload the pieces I performed... but I could NOT resist throwing my good buddy Ian under the bus by also adding the video to "Six 'Serious' Pieces." He's probably going to have some colorful words for me for posting this, and I seriously can't wait until his students in the Titusville, FL band program come across a video of their fearless leader when he was a acting like a *** as a wee lad of 23.
