  • Andre Dhondt, Interspecific Competition in Birds.mov Competition, predation, and mutualism exert powerful natural selection pressures, and all three shape communities. However, the true importance of interspecific competition in nature remains a controversial and unresolved question, with important implications for understanding problems of declining global biodiversity. For a Chats in the Stacks book talk at Mann Library on April 26, 2012, Dr. André Dhondt, the Edwin H. Morgens Professor of Ornithology at Cornell, discusses his new book "Interspecific Competition in Birds," providing a critical review of the topic and highlighting the impact of both past and on-going interspecific competition on the coexistence of species. • An In Through The Out Door Commentary: Man's Best Friends With Benefits Requested by Agovoman. Original video can be seen here: I probably got my evolution arguments a bit muddled up here, so if anyone is willing to correct me, by all means. You have the floor. Usually when it comes to interspecies breeding, the breeding usually occurs by human intervention (more often than not). I can concede that interspecies interactions happen rarely, such as when a whale and a dolphin get together to form a wholphin. Only one is documented to be around, so USUALLY it does not happen. As for the dogcotes, ligers, and beefalos argument, I believe that I can also say that sometimes subspecies interactions can form hybrids, so therefore it is occurring within the same species but in a different subspecies, such as when a Bengal tiger mates with a Siberian tiger. It will still yield a tiger, but a different subspecies of tiger. Based on my research it is safe to assume that interspecific reproduction of two species VERY OFTEN yields sterile offspring, and only RARELY do new species appear as a result of genetic hybridization. The only species I can think of that does this pertains to insects, so really, bigger animals such as lions, elephants, gorillas, etc. do not usually engage in interspecies relationships, unless if humans wish to breed different species or create hybrids between domesticated animals and wild animals (and even that causes major difficulties). Aside from this boilerplate scientific discussion, this commentary is on ...

  • 27. Interspecific Competition Principles of Evolution, Ecology and Behavior (EEB 122) Competition among species, or interspecific competition, can have an even greater effect on selection than competition within species (intraspecific competition). This is often the case in lower density populations. Different species can have positive, neutral, or negative effects on each other's fitness, and the effect species 1 has on species 2 is not necessarily the same that 2 has on 1. The effects that cohabiting species have on each other shapes evolution the same way that selective pressures from within a species or the physical environment shapes it. 00:00 - Chapter 1. My son and his friend Kevin eating the hottest pepper in the world. In 2007, Guinness World Records certified the Bhut Jolokia as the world's hottest chili pepper, 401.5 times hotter than Tabasco sauce. The Bhut Jolokia, as it is commonly known—also known variously by other names (see etymology section below) in its native region, sometimes Naga Jolokia—is a chili pepper previously recognized by Guinness World Records as the hottest pepper in the world. The pepper is typically called the ghost chili or ghost pepper by US media. The Bhut Jolokia is an interspecific hybrid cultivated in the Assam region of northeastern India and parts of neighbouring Bangladesh. It grows in the Indian states of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur, and the Sylhet region of Bangladesh. It can also be found in rural Sri Lanka where it is known as Nai Mirris (cobra chili). There was initially some confusion and disagreement about whether the Bhut was a Capsicum frutescens[10] or a Capsicum chinense pepper, but DNA tests showed it to be an interspecies hybrid, mostly C. chinense with some C. frutescens genes.[11] In 2007, Guinness World Records certified the Bhut Jolokia as the world's hottest chili pepper, 401.5 times hotter than Tabasco sauce ...

  • Learn Biology: Community Ecology- Interspecific Interactions SALE TODAY: Learn Piano on iOS bit.ly Mahalo biology expert Mary Poffenroth discusses the three types of interspecific interaction. Interspecific interaction is a biological concept within community ecology, or the study of the organization and functioning of the populations of species living within a particular habitat. As a part of the web of communities, interspecific interaction refers to when two unrelated species have certain types of of interactions can include pollination, nesting and Three types of interspecific interactions include mutualism, commensalism and parasitism. These interactions can benefit both species, neither benefit nor harm either species or benefit only one of the species while harming the other. organization and stability of biological communities result from the mix of these types of Mutualism --------------------------------------------------------------------- Mutualism occurs when two unrelated species (species A and B) both benefit from a specific interaction (+,+). Often in mutualistic interactions, one species acts as the host while the other is the "visitor." One example involves bees and flowers - bees benefit from pollination because they need the flower's nectar to survive, while flowers benefit from pollination because it allows them to The benefits that are received from these interactions can vary from ...

  • Nuclear Hunting Nuclear hunting or inter-specific fish foraging is a type of association where two or more species forage together. In this association a fish species, the attendant, follows another species, the nuclear. This well documented behavior provides unique feeding opportunities for following individuals (Strand 1988). However, the benefits to the nuclear and attendant vary depending on which type of scheme is employed (review by Ormond 1980). The most common type is "Following and scavenging": a large predator followed by an opportunistic carnivore. Other schemes include: "Interspecific joint hunting" when two predatory species hunt together, and "Hunting by riding" when a predatory attendee swims alongside or above non-predatory nuclear. These associations are not exclusive as behavioral overlap can be observed between categories (Lukoschek & McCormick 2002). The advantage of these social groups allows a broader range of prey categories compared to single-species associations and can increase an individual's ability to catch otherwise unobtainable prey (Silvano 2001). • Interspecific competition. Cellular automata. Population waves. Here we show our two-species competition model. This model is deterministic individual-based cellular automaton. We consider a case of stable coexistance and a case of exclusion. The first species has greater fitness in both cases. Stable coexistance of the two species demonstrates a mechanism of strong violation of the competitive exclusion principle. 1) Hexagonal 4x4 lattice is closed to a torus; 2) {0,1,2,3,4} - the set of states of a site; 3) A neighbourhood is hexagonal; 4) A state transition graph is presented in our paper:
