  • Canadian WWI Internment plaque unveiling: Beauport Armoury A short video documenting the first of two plaque unveilings that took place on September 30, 2006 at Beauport Armoury and Val Cartier both near Quebec City, Canada. The plaques are commemorating two of the 24 WWI internment camps across Canada that held of 8000 Eastern Europeans, 5000 of whom were Ukrainian. The Ukrainians were targeted because the area that they came from was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, with which Canada and its allies were at war. The Canadian government took advantage of the situation and used the internees as cheap labour to do public works. This was Canada's first internment operation and application of the War Measures act. It continued from 1914-1920, some internees being held even after the war ended. This episode of Canadian history is little known. Inky Mark, MP, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko, the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and many other volunteers across Canada worked for years to have the government recognize this injustice. • Raiņa kapsēta "Cemetery".wmv May 8, 2010 Riga, Latvia Come join "TheCeļotājs" journey through time past and time present with a visit to the Raiņa kapsēta. Raiņa kapsēta is named after its most illustrious internee: the writer Janis Plieksans aka 'Rainis'. The gate was designed by Aleksandrs Birzenieks in 1929. The beautiful monument to Rainis, set in a classical rotunda, was designed by Kārlis Zemdegs and carved from a 700-ton granite block. When it was unveiled in 1935, it was the largest monolith sculpture in Europe. During the Soviet occupation part of the cemetery was reserved for those who died in the cause of Communism. Designed in 1970 by Ivars Strautmanis, who also helped make the Sister Monument in Doma laukums, the main feature is the high pylon with a bronze sculpture of the winged goddess of victory. • Righting the Wrong: Sacramento City College's Nisei Diploma Project (low quality) WWII: One of the most devestating wars of all time. It was costly in its preface, in its climax, in its epilogue; costly not only in economy of the nations, politics of the world, and the quality of life but also in civil rights. On the American Homefront, hundreds of innocent Americans were stripped of their rights as citizens and taken to internment camps. Many of these Americans were of Japanese descent. Colleges lost many of their students to the camps, the students unable to get their rightful diplomas. Sacramento City College is one of a dozen colleges to organize a program where Nisei, second-generation Japanese-Americans, who were forced out of the Californian college system can obtain honorary diplomas. Keith Muraki, a counselor at SCC and son of former internee Tom Muraki, as well as Corina Stoflle, SCC's Public Relations representative, speak about their understanding of the nisei diploma project and its effects. ------------------------------ This is Ines Herana. • babby is formed This is the formation and unformation of babby. On April 24, 1944, a B-17G from the 407th BS, 92nd BG, piloted by 1st Lt. William "Woody" Parramore, landed at Altenrhein airfield in Switzerland. The plane had been attacked by German fighters about half an hour before their target, the Dornier aircraft factory at Oberpfaffenhofen, near Munich. The crew was able to continue their mission, with their engineer/top turret gunner, T/Sgt. Roy Hommer, very badly wounded. Upon completing the bomb run, a propellor ran out of control, and a second engine lost oil pressure. Parramore decided to try for nearby Altenrhein rather than land in Germany. Bailing out was not an option because of the seriously wounded crewman. The entire crew survived the landing, with Hommer going to a hospital because of his severe wounds. Parramore later wrote a narrative poem about this mission. 'Baby' landing in Switzerland After an initial quarantine period in Chaumont, the crew was sent to Adelboden to be interned. The officers were eventually separated from the enlisted men and sent to Davos. Under strict orders (from American military attaché Brigadier General Barnwell Legge) not to attempt escape from their internee status under penalty of courts martial, and watched carefully by the Swiss police, the American internees' time in Switzerland was spent playing cards, exploring new bars, playing chess, meeting the local young women, and plotting escapes.
