UMass Digs Deep: 3 Million Years in the Bering Sea UMass Amherst is an international leader in climate change research, and that means faculty and students travel the globe to unearth new data. Beth Caissie is a sedimentologist working on her doctorate in geosciences with renowned paleoclimatologist Julie Brigham-Grette, and in 2009 she traveled to the Bering Sea as part of a National Science Foundation drilling voyage to secure core sediment samples up to 3 million years old. Caissie is particularly interested in a couple of periods when the ancient climate warmed from frozen and glacial to open water and inter-glacial.

They blamed the missing Sea Ice on Faulty Sensor sensor drift, that underestimated Arctic Sea Ice by 500000 square kilometers (193000 square miles), a California- size area . AMSR-E " Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer ", clearly showed the Sea Ice they had missed in February 2009 and it also shows that their deception has continued into July 2009 .The Ice for the most part has survived a Harsh Summer and will shortly no longer be a Seasonal Ice . UNBC So You Think You Can Dance Your Thesis? Soil genesis in relation to glacial history, Central Yukon. The central Yukon has been exposed to multiple glacial / interglacial periods. During the interglacial periods, soil has formed on the deposits left behind by each glacial advance. Early reconnaissance work showed that glacial deposits left by McConnell (~30-12 ka), Reid (~150-80 ka) and pre-Reid (~2.6-0.2 Ma) glaciations have distinct morphological and clay mineral characteristics related to duration of soil development. This initiated my study in the summer of 2008 to evaluate whether these characteristics exist in soil groups of the same age at upland sites in south-central Yukon. My dance will explore a portion of my thesis, namely the relationship between soil development and climate. My dancing assistant will represent surficial deposits which are transformed into soil through the factors of soil formation (time, climate, topography, parent material, biota). I will represent the good, the bad and the ugly of climate. I will enter as the advance of the Reid glaciation, stripping the surface of the soil developed on Pre-Reid deposits. I will then transform into the warm, moist interglacial climate thus promoting soil development. As the McConnell glaciation advances, I will not quite reach the soil but I will induce the development of periglacial features such as sand wedges. I will finally end as the modern day climate.

Similar speculations have appeared over effects due to catastrophes such as asteroid impacts and massive volcanic eruptions. A prediction that massive oil well fires in Kuwait would cause significant effects on climate was quite incorrect. The idea of a global cooling as the result of global warming was already proposed in the 1990s. In 2003, the Office of Net Assessment at the United States Department of Defense was commissioned to produce a study on the likely and potential effects of a modern climate change, especially of a shutdown of thermohaline circulation. The study, conducted under ONA head Andrew Marshall, modelled its prospective climate change on the 8.2 kiloyear event, precisely because it was the middle alternative between the Younger Dryas and the Little Ice Age. The study caused controversy in the media when it was made public in 2004. However, scientists acknowledge that abrupt climate change initiated by GIS melting is not a realistic scenario for the 21st century. Currently, the concern that cooler temperatures would continue, and perhaps at a faster rate, has been observed to be incorrect by the IPCC. Abrupt Climate Change Younger Dryas - Abrupt Climate Change Climate can exhibit abrupt shifts over large regions of the world. As the last glacial period was giving way to the current warm interglacial period, average temperatures in Greenland returned to glacial levels for more than 1000 years. This unusual period, which is called the Younger Dryas, ended abruptly about 12000 years ago. Evidence from an ice core drilled in Greenland indicates that temperatures there rose approximately 15°F (8°C) in less than a decade. Stopping The Coming Ice Age by Larry Ephron & Andy Caffrey This was probably the first time I actually worked on a project to fight the climate crisis. After leaving The Nature Company in 1986 I moved into a flat in Kensington with Larry Ephron, one of a handful of people I knew in the San Francisco Bay Area who were proponents of what was called the Hamaker Theory. John D. Hamaker, a mechanical engineer and agronomist, and Donald Weaver, who I knew in the Bay Area had published the only book on the theory, The Survival of Civilization. In short, the theory is that during interglacial periods, over thousands of years, the earth's soils get depleted of minerals, the plants become less robust and weaker at absorbing carbon dioxide and so carbon dioxide builds up in the atmosphere. It causes more water in the equatorial belt to evaporate and move to the poles where it accumulates as snow. This snow causes the ice caps to advance and a new 100000 year glacial period begins. During that glacial period, all of that mile-thick glacial ice grinds more rock into dust, so that when the glaciers retreat and the plants recolonize, they have wonderful new soil and can suck down the CO2. Sea-Level Rise and Earth Change A research team led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) says it has produced new evidence of sea-level oscillations during a warm period that started about 125000 years ago, raising the possibility of a similar scenario if the planet continues its more recent warming trend. In the latest edition of Nature Geoscience, the researchers report data from an improved method of dating fossil coral reef skeletons in the Bahamas. By calculating more accurate ages for the coral samples than previously possible, they found that sea levels were considerably less stable than earlier believed--oscillating up and down by 4 to 6 meters (13-20 feet) over a few thousand years about 120000 years ago during a period known as the Last Interglacial. "This was the last time that climate was as warm as—or warmer than—today," said WHOI geochronologist William G. Thompson, lead author of the study. "If today's ice sheets continue to melt, we may be headed for a period of ice sheet and sea-level change that is more dynamic than current observations of ice sheets suggest." The polar ice caps currently are shrinking and sea level is rising at a rate of about 30 centimetres (one foot) per century. "How much sea level will rise over the next century or two is a crucial question for the significant part of the world's population that lives in coastal zones," Thompson said. The wintry iciness of today's Alps spread across northern Europe as ice sheets extended as far south as London, Amsterdam and Berlin. Conditions were ideal for cold-adapted animals, forerunners of musk oxen and reindeer. Woolly mammoth bones dredged from the bottom of the North Sea are evidence that this was once icy tundra. The warm interglacial periods attracted very different creatures: fossil hippos, rhinos, lions and hyenas have been unearthed in London. This thermal pulsing has occurred around twenty times, the last ice age ending 15000 years ago. Europe now bears the scars of repeated glaciations. Lake Ladoga, Europe's largest freshwater body, is a product of the last thaw and has its own subspecies of seal as well as osprey, moose and beaver. Ibex are ice-age immigrants from Asia, stranded in the European mountains by the receding glaciers. Even the desert sand of Słowiński in Poland can be traced back to glacial debris washed up by the sea.
