The ballet combined Plutarch & Herodotus's tale of how the Shepherd Gyges usurped the throne of the Kingdom of Lydia from King Candaules via his Queen, Nyssia. In the context of the full-length ballet, this solo was performed during the celebrated bathing scene, when Nyssia dances to her slave's harp. A complete version of Edward Elgar's "Enigma variations" (No. 13-15) This new upload may seem a bit out of place next to my belcanto-orientated recent postings, but the piece in question is just too delightful to pass. Most of the description is taken from "", while my commentaries will be mostly my personal impressions of the variations. "At the end of an overlong day laden with teaching and other duties, Edward Elgar lit a cigar, sat at his piano and began idling over the keys. To amuse his wife, the composer began to improvise a tune and played it several times, turning each reprise into a caricature of the way one of their friends might have played it or of their personal characteristics. "I believe that you are doing something which has never been done before," exclaimed his wife". Thus, as the legend tells us, was born one of music's great works of original conception, and Elgar's greatest large-scale "hit": the Enigma Variations. The enigma is twofold: each of the 14 variations refers to a friend of Elgar's, who is depicted by the nature of the music, or by sonic imitation of laughs, vocal inflections, or quirks, or by more abstract allusions. The other enigma is the presence of a larger "unheard" theme which is never stated but which according to the composer is very well known. A third enigma formed, when I decided to upload the variations, as I am completely baffled about the identity of either the conductor or the orchestra. I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream movie trailer (Fake) Based on the short story by Harlan Ellison, but owing more to the video game of the same name that had a much more involved plot then the story it was based on. Interestingly enough the computer enemy from the game was voiced by Ellison himself, so you're hearing the voice of the author in this trailer XD - The story is about the five remaining humans on earth after the Allied Mastercomputer (or 'AM' as it calls itself) instigates world war three. One hundred and nine years later, the five are being tortured with specific cells tailored to their greatest fears...until one day AM decides to send each into a private game. These 'games' are each designed around the victim's psyche and are designed to break them, but a curious thing happens. The five begin to realize that this series of games might be AM's first mistake since his creation, and if they manage through them there might be a way to take on the mad master-computer himself...possibly saving their souls from his digital Hell. - This game was one of a series of mature horror puzzle games made in the nine*** nineties (among others being Phantasmagoria, Sanatarium, Zork Nemesis...). "Anti" Magnetic water and Levitating Graphite by Diamagnetism Diamagnetism is the property of a substance to be repelled by a magnetic field. Interestingly enough, water shows this effect. We build a simple, but very sensitive detector to show this. We also show pyrolytic carbon that is so diamagnetic that it can float above magnets if they are arranged the right way. Water is diamagnetic, meaning it's slightly repelled by a magnetic field. But in everyday life this is almost impossible to notice. We need to build a very sensitive detector to see it. Just get a basin of water and float a styrofoam block in it. Styrofoam is very light and so even the small repulsive force of a test tube of water will have a noticeable push on it. Push the test tube of water into the center of the block and simply hold a strong neodymium magnet as close as possible to the tube without touching it. It's a very small force, but eventually the block will start moving away from the magnet. Pyrolytic graphite, also called pyrolytic carbon, exhibits the same effect and can even be made to levitate on top of a magnet. A single magnet is unstable since the graphite will like to fall off the side. But having four magnets and arranging them like in the video will create a "void" in the center that the graphite "falls" into and remains stably levitated. Roslavets - Five Preludes (1922) Nikolai Roslavets (1881-1944) is sometimes called the "Russian Schoenberg" and was certainly the first Russian composer to use a system of tone organization similar to Schoenberg's serialism. Before the 1917 revolution, Roslavets was regarded as a cutting-edge composer comparable to Scriabin. Interestingly, Marc-Andre Hamelin describes Roslavets's music as "Scriabin on acid." After the revolution and the formation of the RAPM (Russian Association of Proletarian Musicians), Roslavets was criticized and harrassed for his modernism. In the late 1920s, he left the Communist Party and in 1931 moved to Tashkent. There he conducted for a music theater and composed simple pieces in accordance with Socialist Realism. He died in obscurity and his name and music was mostly forgotten until the 1970s.

Ancient Cambodia Ancient Indo-China The country which is today called Cambodia is only a small fraction of the vast Khmer Empire that controlled much of Indo-China from the ninth to the 13th century AD. At its height, the Khmer Empire consisted of today's Cambodia, Laos, most of southern Vietnam and Thailand, as well as some of the Malay peninsula. Culture The word "Angkor" is derived Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language, of "Nagara" which means "City". Angkor Wat literally means "City of Temple" and Angkor Thom "The Magnificent City". As we can see today the unarguable evidences of various Angkor temples lying on the vast plain of Siemreap, or even beyond its present-day border to the Preah Vihear at Dangrek Mountain, Phnomrung and Phimai in Thailand and Wat Phu in Laos. All these were created and carefully crafts by the ancient Khmers in successive centuries. Tim Berg (AKA Avicii) Tim Berg, AKA Avicii, is a hot new DJ/producer hailing from Stockholm. He only started out in 2008 at the tender age of 18 doing a bedroom remix of the theme tune to Commodore 64 game, 'Lazy Jones'. This led to his first release on Strike Recordings, 'Lazy Lace'. The Iron Giant - My Favorite Part - Part 1 This is the part where the Iron Giant is finally discovered by US military forces. The Iron Giant actually discovers the reason for why it was sent as well. I cannot stress how much I enjoyed this cartoon. I would highly recommend anyone to purchase it, precisely because it deals with some fairly serious subject matter in a very entertaining way that is easy to understand. Interestingly enough, Vin Diesel actually does the voice for the Iron Giant. I watched this cartoon several times before I noticed his name in the end credits.

Q&A: Background: This modem was given to me ~1989 by the widow of a retired (IBM?) engineer. has a Model B dated 1965, and I've seen a ~1967 Model C written up in a magazine. (Interestingly, incorrectly identified as being only 110 baud.) Even better than seeing it in a museum, I decide to hook the trusty Model A up and make it talk to something. After some trial and error, I manage to get it to talk to a terminal server at work and use it to connect to a linux box. It's ALIVE!
