  • Atlante di Roma / Atlas of Rome The Atlas is an open system gathering visions on the city. Projects, actions, publications, web sites, theories. Everything can be included in the atlas to create a shared information space. The Atlas lives across digital and physical spaces. On the web, an open system is used to add visions and to access the ones that are already present through territory, time and the semantic space. In the physical space, the Atlas is a large scale installation designed for public spaces. Here people can access the shared information either visually, by observing the 35 meter wide information aesthetics, or they can directly interact with information by using multitouch screens allowing direct connection to the projected surface, browsing information through categories, territories and times. The walls of the public spaces animate themselves, communicating the stratification of the multiple points of view, ideas, projects, events and voices that define the life of the city, its emotions, its desires and strategies. The Atlas is an open project, instantiated for the first time in the city of Rome, where it has been curated by Paolo Valente and commissioned by the Order of the Architects for the Festa dell'Architettura 2010 ( Index Urbis www.indexurbis.it ) with the name "Atlante di Roma", with the fundamental collaboration of the Council for Communication and Cultural Policies of the City of Rome. • Invoked Computing: Spatial audio and video AR invoked through miming Developed by Alexis Zerroug and Alvaro Cassinelli at the University of Tokyo, Ishikawa Komuro Lab (Laval 2011 Jury Grand Price). The aim of the "invoked computing" project is to develop a multi-modal AR system able to turn everyday objects into computer interfaces or communication devices on the spot. To "invoke" an application, the user needs just to mimic a specific interaction scenario; miming will prompt the ubiquitous computing environment to "condense" on the real object, by supplementing it with artificial affordances instantiated thanks to common AR techniques. An example: taking a banana and bringing it closer to the ear. The gesture is clear enough: directional microphones and parametric speakers hidden in the room would make the banana function as a real handset on the spot. Another example: to invoke a laptop computer, the user could take a pizza box, open it and "tape" on its surface). We are interested here on developing a multi-modal AR system able to augment objects with video as well as *sound* (in addition to the usual camera and projector pair, we are using parametric speakers. The parametric speakers project a low divergence ultrasound beam that becomes audible (demodulated) when touching a real object. . Hardware: mac mini, led projector, pointgrey camera, IR source, parametric speakers, arduino and servomotors Software: OpenFrameworks, Artoolkit, opencv, arduino For more: www.k2.tu-tokyo.ac.jp

  • Concepts Extending C++ Templates For Generic Programming Google Tech Talks February 21, 2007 ABSTRACT: Concepts are a major addition to C++0x that make templates more robust, more powerful, and easier to write and use. At their most basic level, concepts provide a type system for templates. Using concepts, the C++ compiler is able to detect errors in the definition and use of templates before they are instantiated. One immediately obvious benefit of this separate type-checking capability is a dramatic improvement in error messages resulting from improper use of templates. Look a little deeper and we find that concepts support an entirely new programming paradigm, Generic Programming, enabling the construction of a new breed of generic libraries that...

  • MOCKINGBIRD sung by Sam Harris and Todd Schroeder (Concert Rehearsal) MP3 ► ► Facebook ► http Twitter ► Web Site ► Subscribe! ► http Sam and Todd rehearse "Mockingbird" for Todd's annual Young Artist Grant Benefit Concert. "Mockingbird" is a 1963 song written and recorded by Inez and Charlie Foxx, covered about a decade later by Carly Simon and James Taylor in a 1974 single from Simon's Hotcakes album. The original single was billed to Inez Foxx with vocal accompaniment by her brother Charlie, as they traded off the lyric on a syllabic basis. Considered something of a novelty song, it was a big hit for Symbol Records, reaching number 2 on the US R&B chart and number 7 on the US pop singles chart in late 1963. In the UK the song was released the same year by Island Records as the company's first single on their Sue label. The Simon-Taylor remake, released on Elektra Records and featuring some additional lyrics credit by Taylor, was also quite the success, hitting number 5 on the US pop chart in early 1974. A few years later it became a high point of the No Nukes film, as Simon began her part off-stage and then bounded on, trading notes all the time. Other versions have been instantiated by Dusty Springfield and in 2004 by country music artist Toby Keith, featuring his daughter, Krystal. Keith's version was a #27 on the Hot Country Songs charts that year. And now Sam Harris and Todd Schroeder attempt their first duet of the song. Lyrics: MOCKINGBIRD Inez & Charlie Foxx with ...

Likewise, properties, dispositions, behaviors, or structures classified as emergent are instantiated by systems consisting exclusively of physical parts. ****************** The three features of weak emergentism— (i) the thesis of physical monism (ii) the thesis of systemic properties and (iii) the thesis of synchronic determination —, however, are compatible with contemporary reductionist approaches without further ado. • Portal 2D on a chip (FPGA) Inspired by Valve's Portal game, we created a 2D simplified version using the Altera DE1 FPGA development board. No kind of CPU was instantiated, we coded everything from scratch, except the mouse and video controller, using VHDL. Man, it was hard work! The main character is on a wheelchair because we are not artistic enough to design a standing character, but there actually is an animation when the chair moves, which unfortunately can't be seen on the video above. Other things that can't be seen on the video are: 1) Portal trajectory when the character shoots a portal. 2) Three kind of surfaces, black ("non-portable"), grey ("portable") and red (kills the character). 3) High definition sprites: main character, exit sign and cake slice. However despite Google's calls for localisation, they have not instantiated a localised doodle for www.google.co.ke. The closest they got was Kenya is the land of the "Safari", home to the big five, land of splendid beaches and rich savanna, a mix of cultures and colours and internationally renowned for its ling distance runners. Ironically Kenya remains visually anonymous on the world's biggest search engine. All we want is a piece of us on the web, with Jamhuri day coming up on12th Dec 2010, we are not asking for much, just a doodle that we can call ours and unite as all. As Chief rightly puts it, knock yourself out and help get a Doodle 4 Google Kenya in any way possible. I will discuss how to deal with these issues in my next video.
  • Interwidget Communication for Apache Wookie engine Widgets can be viewed as separate side-by-side applications integrated and displayed in any widget container (eg Moodle, Elgg, or Drupal). As widgets are tailored to one specific task and developed in a modularized way, there is no need to make communication between widgets possible in the first way. This holds as long as a widget container just wants to display different widgets grouped together in one application but with no interaction between them. But if a system designer wants to model, for example, a learning path, or any other workflow within the environment, the widgets need to share their current status and listen to notifications about updates among each other. Wookie does not support IWC by default. Communication is limited to inter-instance data sharing. This means data can only be shared between one specific widget instantiated by users of one widget container, but not, for example, between two or more widgets of one user or between different widgets of different users. To go beyond the current Wookie approach we developed a branch of the Wookie engine by extending and adding additional IWC possibilities to overcome the current user restrictions.

  • JAAS Code Sample This is a short code sample for using JAAS. You can download the code sample files from the 'Introduction to JAAS' free course at . The Principle interface represents any entity such as an individual, corporation or a simple login id. Our implementation for that interface will be in accordance with our needs. The CallbackHandler interface represents an object on which we can call the handle method passing over an array of Callback objects. Each Callback object can be instantiated from a different class, that implements the Callback interface, such as PasswordCallback, NameCallback, TextoutputCallback and others. Our implementation for CallbackHandler should execute a specific code for each and every Callback object in accordance with its type (eg if the Callback object is of the NameCallback type we can expect our implementation to ask the user to enter his username, if the Callback object is of the PasswordCallback type we can expect our implementation to ask the user for his password etc.). The LoginMoule interface describes the login process. We should implement this interface assuming that the required data for approving the login (eg the username and the password) will be retrieved from the user through our implementation for CallbackHandler. The LoginModule and the CallbackHandler interfaces keep a clear separation between getting the username and the password from the user (CallbackHandler interface is responsible for that) and comparing them with ...
  • Cognitive Neuroscience of Mindfulness Meditation Google Tech Talks February, 28 2008 ABSTRACT Mindfulness meditation, one type of meditation technique, has been shown to enhance emotional awareness and psychological flexibility as well as induce well-being and emotional balance. Scientists have also begun to examine how meditation may influence brain functions. This talk will examine the effect of mindfulness meditation practice on the brain systems in which psychological functions such as attention, emotional reactivity, emotion regulation, and self-view are instantiated. We will also discuss how different forms of meditation practices are being studied using neuroscientific technologies and are being integrated into clinical practice to address symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. Speaker: Philippe Goldin Philippe is a research scientist and heads the Clinically Applied Affective Neuroscience group in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University. He spent 6 years in India and Nepal studying various languages, Buddhist philosophy and debate at Namgyal Monastery and the Dialectic Monastic Institute, and serving as an interpreter for various Tibetan Buddhist lamas. He then returned to the US to complete a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Rutgers University. His NIH-funded clinical research focuses on (a) functional neuroimaging investigations of cognitive-affective mechanisms in adults with anxiety disorders, (b) comparing the effects of mindfulness meditation and cognitive-behavioral therapy on brain ...

  • Ecological Creativity This is a follow-up to the last video I made exploring Graeme Wallas' model of creativity and how it plays itself out experientially. What I am interested in here is how some of that process might be instantiated physically in terms of the substrate and processes of the brain. My guess would be that the cognitive mechanisms which allow people to have illuminating ideas within creative cycles follow something like ecological or evolutionary processes (and here I am leaning on Gerald Edelman's idea of Neural Darwinism, as well as meme theory). The superficially mechanistic flow chart that Wallas seems to be indicating probably hides a deeply organic and subtle phenomenon.
  • Wireless Wellness - Part 2 Wireless Wellness - Part 2 And here's how we actually setup the system. So as you know, from my previous videos, a Meru Wireless LAN is composed of controllers that are connected over a back-end cloud to -- this is a wired cloud -- to access points, and then somewhere in the network, managing multiple controllers is a server appliance. And this server appliance happens to have an application. It's actually a box where you can start stacking multiple applications as part of sort a middle-score evolution towards trying to provide additional value and added software services. One such application happens to be the Easy RF Network Manager that we talk about in a companion video. Today, I'm going to talk about another core software application, which is the Easy RF Wellness Manager, and the underlying technology that enables the Easy RF Wellness Monitor to monitor what we call wireless or network wellness. It is not just reacting to problems, it is actually looking at the health of the system or the wellness of the system and reporting on that on a continuous basis. Here's how we do it. So I'm going to draw one other access point, specifically so, for a reason. Now, let's assume that this controller has been configured with multiple SSIDs, and therefore these SSIDs get propagated to all the access points and they're all serving clients. So they're all in the same channel, recall, that's a core part of Meru's architecture. They all form one large cell from a client's ...

  • Design Pattern - Singleton Parte #1 In software engineering, the singleton pattern is a design pattern used to implement the mathematical concept of a singleton, by restricting the instantiation of a class to one object. This is useful when exactly one object is needed to coordinate actions across the system. The concept is sometimes generalized to systems that operate more efficiently when only one object exists, or that restrict the instantiation to a certain number of objects (say, five). Some consider it an anti-pattern, judging that it is overused, introduces unnecessary limitations in situations where a sole instance of a class is not actually required, and introduces global state into an application.[1][2][3][4][5][6] In C++ it also serves to isolate from the unpredictability of the order of dynamic initialization, returning control to the programmer. Implementation Implementation of a singleton pattern must satisfy the single instance and global access principles. It requires a mechanism to access the singleton class member without creating a class object and a mechanism to persist the value of class members among class objects. The singleton pattern is implemented by creating a class with a method that creates a new instance of the class if one does not exist. If an instance already exists, it simply returns a reference to that object. To make sure that the object cannot be instantiated any other way, the constructor is made protected (not private, because reuse and unit test could need to access ...

  • People Really - Help during your spare time, help wherever you can Humanitarian work, whatever domain, requires people. Nowadays, humanitarian actions are driven by persons who are completely devoted to their mission. They are doing a great job however that kind of persons is quite difficult to find. The idea behind "People Really" is to give anyone the opportunity to help. Helping during our spare time, helping wherever we can. Based on free time schedule and geo localization of the potential helper, People Really synchronizes humanitarian efforts of a large number of volunteers in order to achieve the defined goal. People Really acts as a coordinator between the needs, as specified by associations, and the potential helpers. Deployed as an application on actual social networks such as facebook, live spaces, orkut, People Really will use them as a source of potential volunteers. Helpers will have a direct access to People Really through social networks. The concept of People Really is very flexible; it remains efficient and can be instantiated to many domains. We have fully implemented an instance of our solution for universal education accessibility and called it "Education Provider". With slight changes, we can move the scope to many other domains such as health care, global partnership, child health, etc. Help during your spare time, help wherever you can ... Are you People Really? (This project was rewarded by first place during the 2009 edition on Imagine Cup Algeria, and was selected to represent Algeria at worldwide finals).

  • Self-Organizing Sensory-Motor Map for Low-Level Touch Reactions After being turned on, the robot does not know how to react on tactile stimulation on its artificial sensor skin units. Our aim is to automatically find an appropriate reflex like reaction. Our algorithm therefor only receives knowledge on the number of sensor units it can read from and degrees of freedom it can actuate. Here we distributed 15 multi-modal sensor units (HEX-O-SKIN) on a KUKA light weight robotic arm with 7 degrees of freedom. The robot then explores the current pose through sinusoidal velocity pattern, on one degree of freedom after the other. During this exploration, data from the accelerometer on every unit is being sampled. At the end of the exploration, our algorithm assembles a new part of the sensory-motor map, related to the explored pose. This part is then stored in memory and can later on be used to map tactile stimulation in the same or similar poses. So far we only focused on lateral weights and lateral stimulation -- this means in the direction of the surface normal. Our approach is to then use the sensory motor map in the opposite direction, transferring touch events detected on the sensor unit level to motor commands. Thus the robot knows how to react on contact, detected by four GP2S60 proximity sensors on every sensor unit. The behavior is defined for a single sensor unit and instantiated as often as there are sensor units distributed on the robot. Multiple reactions on a unit are super posed, as well as the degrees of freedom velocity ...

First seemingly autonomous, blobs and performers start to relate dynamic and spatially, creating situations that converge ...
  • XNA Sound Class (Not XACT) I made this XNA sample to test our new Sound class for ionXgame projects. The Soundeffect and SoundEffectInstance classes were encapsulated to allow play, pause, resume, stop, volume, pan, pitch, volume and 3D sounds. This sound class can be instantiated and a sound loaded with all capabilities in just 2 lines of code. My rhythm (or lack thereof) is apparent on the XBOX controller so don't laugh. ;)
  • Unity 3.2 Android Remote Test Testing Android Remote using Unity 3.2 and Samsung Galaxy S 2.2 (Froyo) The way it works is Play screen is being broadcasted to an Android as a video, receiving input and accelerometer details back trough USB cable. USB debugging enabled. Exporting to APK gives better performance, shaders also works quite beautiful. **** This little test is a prototype for my slowly upcomming Android game. It's been only 2 nights of work so far. I do not rotate sphere, as if i later add any objects on it, their Vector3 positions will have to be updated every frame. Thus eating up CPU. Also imagine instantiated projectiles, they will not shoot properly if you are moving this "world" in a same time. So i am only moving a camera. Camera is attached as a child to empty game object parent (placed at 0,0,0) and camera is placed -30,0,0 at first. Single Tap movement only rotates empty gameObject parent, and it works as a pivot for camera for easy calculations, so no hard math, simple rotate script. The way pinch works is way different from what many people would expect. This is pretty accurate method, but it is also very sensitive, very very sensitive! I am defining 2 finger positions each as Vector2 values from both .position and .deltaPosition. Difference is .position takes coordinates from screen, while .deltaPosition construes new coordinates at each finger position starting with 0,0 for both. .deltaPosition is only used to measure speed of fingers, that affects how fast pinching/zooming ...
  • Spotlightonfreedom #1 What True Patriots Fight and Die For. from For what issue might you risk your comfort? For what cause might you put your freedom and even your existence on the line? Most people would answer "family," and many would add "good friends," and that will be taken for granted here. But aside from blood lines and choices of mutually affirmative relationships, what issues are important enough to fight and die for? Many people would say for my country. But what is a country? Is it a constitution? Aristotle says yes "The people are the constitution." Even further, Aristotle adds that humans are naturally social and naturally choose and belong in a state. And states are both formed and maintained by constitutions. But let me add to Aristotle's understanding the notion that there are normative principles that underlie every constitution and are instantiated by that constitution. It is those principles that unite us as a people. Therefore, it is those principles that are worth fighting and dying for. It is those principles that make up the culture which abides by a constitution.
  • 10-minute Ruby lesson #2 part 2 Strings. ie words, phrases, text, letters, numbers, symbols. I discuss indexing a string on a regular expression (ie quickly grabbing the part that matches a pattern) and interpolating code into your string. fyi you can also interpolate code into a regular expression. And yes, regular expressions can be instantiated with a literal // , similarly to the other objects I discussed in this lesson. A bit about symbols at the end.
  • Coming Together - Beauty and Truth A work for autonomous agents that demonstrates self-organizing behaviours in a musical environment. Given no explicit musical data, agents explore their environment while creating melodic phrases, building beliefs through interactions with other agents via messaging and listening (to both audio and/or MIDI data), generating goals, and executing plans. The artistic focus of Coming Together is the actual process of convergence, heard during performance (each of which usually lasts about ten minutes): the movement from random individualism to converged ensemble interaction. If convergence is successful, four additional agents are instantiated that exploit the emergent harmony and rhythm through brief, but beautiful melodic gestures. Once these agents have completed their work, or if the original "explorer" agents fail to converge, the system resets itself, and the process begins again.
  • Design Pattern - Singleton Parte #2 In software engineering, the singleton pattern is a design pattern used to implement the mathematical concept of a singleton, by restricting the instantiation of a class to one object.
  • 'Reflectogenesis' - Origin of Man (and religion) In mirrors.'Consciousness - The $3 fix' I've been giving the above ideas some thought - and have come to realise that hominids first discovered mirrors in the form of pyrites - (fools gold) some 50000 years ago - given rise to spoken language and the origin of the human species. What puzzled me was why they never developed this (consciousness into a written language earlier. The answer is simple - they did not know that their mirror image as seen in pyrites (or a similar portable reflecting surface) gave rise to their new and completely mysterious property of consciousness. They might have been fascinated by the shiney surface etc. but they did not relise its effect of creating their mind. The mirror people took no notice of their 'mirrors.' and their strive for survival led to them being overlooked. It took another 45000 years for the pharoahs to discover the properties that mirrors instantiated in the human brain. Again this only happened by accident. The pharoahs valued gold because of its association with the sun. However they could see their reflection clearly in gold artefacts and became unwittingly mesmerised by their own reflection. They started to realise the value of the ability of metals to reflect their own image and create introspective consciousness. This freed them from the 'bicameral minds' of their subjects and freed mankind from its evolutionary past. Richard Dawkins would describe them as a part of the Extended phenotype. I suggest they are the crucial part. The use of mirrors or highly ...
  • City Flocking Prototype A prototype/WIP project based around the idea of a procedural city filled with homicidal flocks of blackbirds. The player camera controls the flock of birds which are controlled by the Boids flocking algorithm. When the correct input is received, the birds automatically swarm towards the nearest target (human) and will attack until the target has been destroyed. The city consists of a basic building mesh mapped with 1 of 4 textures, and then instantiated over a procedural grid.
  • What is the Intelligent Computer? Part 2 of 4 - Goal Forms as Music Notation to Agent Identity In this series of four (4) ten minute (10 min) podcasts, we introduce Stored Purpose machine intelligence and many topics related to the Intelligent Computer. This series will teach you to speak Stored Purpose in forty minutes or less. Stored purpose is an expansive framework, the first top down redesign of business and consumer technology since the stored program architecture was introduced in 1943. Although radical in its use of an Existence Model as its basis, stored purpose is practical in its approach of making new algorithms compatible with existing commercial hardware. This podcast will highlight several applications in machine science, enterprise technology, infrastructure and life science. • Re: Defense, again & Polycentric rebuttals Subscribe & Comment :) I recorded this on the 31st but because of work, an exam, and a power outage I couldn't upload it until now. It's a response to FringeElement's direct response to me on Polycentric law here: Libertarianism is a defense of the minority, in opposition to the will of any "opperational majority". In this video I explain what I think the criteria is for knowing when the freerider problem has been solved; why antistatists who brush off defense are contradictory; then I commend FringeElements for intellectual seriousness; and rebut his response to my last video: Polycentric law is NOT libertarian Luckily I brought up similar things as his new video, Defense, again: The best part was this quote from the description: "I'm now REALLY starting to see what Spawk saw in the market anarchists. If I didn't have my own system for defense and my own worldview regarding the state, ideological support and polycentric law, this whole exchange would have convinced me to never become a market anarchist or "anti-statist". They have been impervious and stupid, and unduly confident with their little logic games that collapse the real complexity of these problems." He's not devoted to the NAP. He justifies property on pragmatic / living standards grounds. He acknowledges the reality of public goods. And he necessitates what is qualitatively identical to a federal level legal apparatus and military program. Is FE in an ...
