  • Winterizing houseplants 10/5/2007Moving Houseplants Back Inside for the Winter If you're like me, you put some or all of your houseplants outside for the summer. Now that fall is here, it's time to think about moving them back in for the long winter ahead. There are a few steps you can take to prepare your plants for indoor conditions. First, bring the plants inside at night and put them outside during the day every day for two weeks. This will allow them to acclimate much faster. If you bring them in without this acclimation period, they're apt to drop leaves. Second, I spray all my plants for bugs. I assume there are eggs, larvae, or full-grown pests in the plants, even if I can't see them. Treat them organically. Use a Neem Oil or insecticidal soap or an all-year dormant oil. Be sure you use an all-year dormant oil. There are systemic insecticides you can put directly into the soil. These are not organic, however, and are actually quite toxic. I would use them only if organic methods are not working. Be sure to keep children and pets away from these substances and wash your hands carefully if you use them. I would also trim back any growth or branches that don't seem healthy. You can try rooting cuttings now, if you so desire. For example, if you have a coleus plant, take a few inches of the plant off the top and strip the bottom leaves from the cutting. Then place the cutting in sterile soil (you can get this at any store) and keep the soil moist, but not wet. The roots should take in six to ...
  • Mozzi Mort death chamber A UNIQUE LIFE-SAVING PRODUCT • Mozzi-Mort™ is a revolutionary and clinically approved insecticidal coating specifically developed to eradicate insect pests. • The unique property of the product will attack the nervous and muscular system of insects. When a mosquito lands on the treated surface, the insect will absorb traces of Mozzi-Mort™. This will result in paralysis and death within a few minutes. • The effectiveness of the product is guaranteed for a minimum period of 2 years from the date of application, making Mozzi-Mort™ both economically and functionally efficient. • Mozzi-Mort™ can dramatically reduce the spread of infection-carrying insects and so lower the risk of catching diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya and chagas disease. • Biting insects and other species such as flies and ***roaches also carry numerous diseases. Mosquitoes alone cause 2-3 million deaths annually. As well as causing disease insect bites can also cause pain, itching and swelling and general discomfort. • Mozzi-Mort dries to a clear finish over existing hard surfaces.
  • 15-107 Science Matters DDT & the Modern Environmental Movement I Lead: It seemed to be a miracle: Farmers worldwide looked ahead to the prospect of lush fields of produce free of pests. All they had to do was use DDT. Intro.: A Moment in Time with Dan Roberts. Content: In the years following the Civil War the United States government, through the newly-created Department of Agriculture, began to aggressively promote industrialized agriculture. It was an amazing success. Techniques developed at land-grant colleges and applied by county extension agents brought a new level of technology to the ancient practice of food cultivation. Increased efficiency and mechanization made the American farmer the envy of the world. Per capita output soared and farm population began to shrink, thus freeing workers for growing urban industrial enterprise. Yet by the early decades of the twentieth century, problems began to arise as per-acre production growth began to diminish. One of the techniques used in the new science was monoculture, the practice of planting row upon row of identical vegetation over huge stretches of landscape. Insects loved it; these pests--which along with uncooperative weather were the ancient enemies of the hard-working farmer--had a field day. It was banquet time! Something had to be done to control infestation. Plant-derived and metallic insecticides such as pyrethrum, lead arsenate and copper sulfate had been tried but did not work well. Then in 1939 Swiss chemist Paul Müller discovered the insecticidal properties of dichloro ...

  • White Fly Traps One of the ironies of gardening is that often some of the smallest pests can create the biggest nuisance. Let me give you an example. I know this little Angel's Trumpet doesn't look like much now. It's because it's just getting over an infestation of White Flies, but if you could have seen it last year it was spectacular. It was covered with these long, peach-colored, trumpet shaped blossoms and the foliage was a rich green. As you can see, the White Flies have just about drained all of the life out of this little plant. You can see the evidence of their damage in the lack of vigor in the plant and the discoloration of the leaves. Before they were a rich green and now they've turned a sickly yellow. You can tell that you have White Flies by doing a simple test. Just shake the foliage and if a cloud of white insects fly out then you've spotted the culprit. I was able to get this infestation of White Fly under control with repeated applications of an insecticidal soap. Now, for this to work best, you really need to soak the under side of the leaves and the top of the plant all the way down to the base. My second line of defense is to use these sticky, White Fly Traps. You see, the color yellow is attractive to White Flies and other insects so they're drawn onto it, stick and eventually die. Now you can pick these up at your local garden center and they're easy to apply. If you'd like more information on earth-friendly and safe ways to deal with pests in your garden just ...

  • Interrupting the Transmission of Malaria Using DDT, India 1962 A German chemistry student synthesized DDT in 1874, but the insecticidal property of DDT was not discovered until 1939 by Paul Müller in Switzerland. Various militaries in WWII utilized the new insecticide initially for louse-borne typhus. DDT was used for malaria control at the end of WWII after it had proven effective against malaria-carrying mosquitoes. With the success of DDT, the advent of less toxic, more effective synthetic antimalarials, and the enthusiastic and urgent belief that time and money were of the essence, the World Health Organization (WHO) submitted at the World Health Assembly in 1955 an ambitious proposal for the eradication of malaria worldwide. Eradication efforts began and focused on house spraying with residual insecticides, antimalarial drug treatment, and surveillance, and would be carried out in 4 successive steps: preparation, attack, consolidation, and maintenance. Successes included eradication in nations with temperate climates and seasonal malaria transmission. Some countries such as India and Sri Lanka had sharp reductions in the number of cases, followed by increases to substantial levels after efforts ceased. Other nations had negligible progress (such as Indonesia, Afghanistan, Haiti, and Nicaragua). Some nations were excluded completely from the eradication campaign (most of sub-Saharan Africa). The emergence of drug resistance, widespread resistance to available insecticides, wars and massive population movements, difficulties in ...

  • Movento® - the BIG new hit in insect control Movento® provides fruit and vegetable growers with two important breakthroughs in one. As well as having a unique new insecticidal mode of action, Movento exhibits 2-way systemicity. The result is excellent, long-term control of a broad range of sucking insect pests in a wide variety of crops.

  • How Malaria is Transmitted 1943 Malaria is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted via the bites of infected mosquitoes. Around the world, a child dies of malaria every 30 seconds. There were 247 million cases of malaria in 2006, causing nearly one million deaths, mostly among African children. In the human body, the parasites multiply in the liver, and then infect red blood cells. Symptoms of malaria include fever, headache, and vomiting, and usually appear between 10 and 15 days after the mosquito bite. If not treated, malaria can quickly become life-threatening by disrupting the blood supply to vital organs. In many parts of the world, the parasites have developed resistance to a number of malaria medicines. Key interventions to control malaria include: prompt and effective treatment with artemisinin-based combination therapies; use of insecticidal nets by people at risk; and indoor residual spraying with insecticide to control the vector mosquitoes. For more information about malaria and its control, go to the website of the World Health Organization (WHO). This is clipped from the 1943 film, The Winged Scourge, the first of a series of health-related educational shorts produced by the Disney studios and the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs for showing in Latin America. In this propaganda short, the viewers are taught about how the mosquito can spread malaria. A young mosquito flies into a house and consumes the blood of an infected human. She then consumes the blood of a ...
