Putting on Influenza PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for Healthcare Workers This video is the best Ive seen on this vital topic - thanks Australia Dept of Health and Aging ! Healthcare workers must be provided with the proper PPE, including respirators (and not surgical masks) to protect them from airborne, droplet and contact transmission of the current H1N1 flu virus. We need our healthcare workers to stay healthy to be able to keep taking care of us! Sadly, healthcare workers worldwide are often not getting the protection they need from airborne disease, such as the current swine flu. In this current swine flu outbreak, CDC began suggesting that surgical masks will do to protect healthcare workers (without the nylon stockings mentioned in this song). Much evidence regarding airborne transmission and the need for true respirators has accumulated since this video was made. A recent report by the US Institute of Medicine (IOM) RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FOR HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN THE WORKPLACE AGAINST NOVEL H1N1 INFLUENZA A (WWW.NAP.EDU ) supports that health care workers who interact with patients suspected or confirmed to be infected with novel H1N1 influenza Ashould wear fitted N95 respirators, which filter better than looser medical masks. However, wearing N95 respirators should be only one element of workers' and health care organizations' infection control strategies. This clip is from the wonderful Australian Government Department of Health and Agings DVD "Pandemic Infuenza Preparedness, Safe Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE ...

Equine Influenza Webinar Equine influenza is the most common viral respiratory disease in horses. Flu gained worldwide attention in 2007 by shutting down the equine industry in parts of Australia and Japan. While Japan had suffered through minor outbreaks in the past, Australia had a naïve equine population, meaning the horses had never been exposed to influenza, nor were they vaccinated against the disease. The cost of the Australian outbreak is estimated to be hundreds of millions of dollars.

The Influenza Pandemic of 1918 Scientists have built an organism from scratch in an experiment that raises questions about the very nature of life. The research, reminiscent of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, will horrify many religious leaders, politicians and philosophers. The world's first synthetic organism is a tiny polio virus constructed artificially in the laboratory. But it is a first step towards creating more complex forms of life. Within a century, some scientists believe it will be possible to 'reconstruct' species that have become extinct, or create totally new organisms. The researchers who created the version of the polio virus said they wanted to prove how easy it would be for terrorists to make deadly biological weapons. A team at the University of New York at Stony Brook assembled the virus and then injected it into mice. The animals were just as they would have been by a naturally-occurring polio virus, and then killed. 'The reason we did it was to prove that it can be done and it now is a reality,' said Dr Eckard Wimmer, leader of the research team, which reports its findings today in the journal Science. 'This approach has been talked about, but people didn't take it seriously.' The polio virus is tiny in genetic terms, but building an artificial replica took several years. The scientists followed a genetic 'recipe' for polio downloaded from the Internet and using genetic material - DNA --from a mail-order supplier to use as building blocks. They made a series of small genetic ...
