"The happiness and suffering of all beings, are due to karma, the Sage taught; Karma arises from diverse acts, which in turn create the diverse classes of beings." Karma is contrary to three wrong views, 1. Pubbekatahetuvada: The belief that all happiness and suffering, including all future happiness and suffering, arise from previous karma, and human beings can exercise no volition to affect future results (Past-action determinism). 2. Issaranimmanahetuvada: The belief that all happiness and suffering are caused by the directives of a Supreme Being (Theistic determinism). 3. Ahetu-apaccayavada: The belief that all happiness and suffering are random, having no cause (Indeterminism or Accidentalism). The main job of karma, is teaching people responsibility and their potential to change.

  • Re: Free will, a proposal (and the confusion about determinism) Randomness is just a shorthand word for indeterminacy. It is not ME who is arguing that the laws of quantum and "non-quantum" physics have something whatsover to do with free will and the brain, in the first place. In fact it is those who said "physics has proven that..." who are bringing it on, not me at all. So I must rebut the part of it that is groundless, because it contradicts what we know from science (what we know today, of course). Then, if you didn't need hard-determinism "so much" in you argumentation in the first place, why did you ever bring it on? To waste my time? :-)

  • Dhorpatan, if you're going to hold to free-will... The reasons to hold to free-will make sense, and I agree with you that we have free-will. However if you are going to hold to free-will you must also hold to some sort of quantum mind theory. In 2007 John Conway and Simon Kochen demonstrated that in order for us to have free-will subatomic particles must have a "free-will" of their own (ie quantum indeterminism) and that therefore the structures in our brains must somehow tap into this indeterminism and exploit it in such a way so as to give us free-will. Therefore if we have free-will some quantum mind model such as Orch-OR must be valid as well. Now as an atheist I understand why you would have a problem with this. If Orch-OR holds then it would follow that the wave-function of the universe is a mind -which would be an uneasy conclusion for atheists to hold to. However just because most arguments for God are bad, doesn't mean that they are all bad. Some argument out there might be valid and be based on valid premises, and until you investigate it you'd never know. As such it doesn't make sense to set up your conclusion in advance and pick your premises afterward. So re-examine things like Orch-OR without looking at the conclusions that follow. After all if we do indeed have free-will then it isn't at all unreasonable to suggest that Orch-OR is valid.

  • Is Time the Hidden Variable of quantum mechanics? Could time be the Hidden Variable that can explain the paradoxes of quantum physics? We know that time is a variable because we have time dilation when an object accelerates towards the speed of light and also around objects of great mass. Time is a measurement and we have a Measurement Problem in quantum physics and time is the only variable that has effect all the matter of the Universe from its creation to the present day to create such a problem. Quantum entanglement can be explained if light has spherical symmetry and the polarization of a photon remains the same for the whole surface of the sphere. When the spherical waves come in contact with electrons on the surface of an atom it will form photons. Each photon will have a unique position in space and time that will be part of the time continuum. In this theory the uncertainty of the Uncertainty Principle is the same uncertainty that the observer will have with any future event because time the Hidden Variable. Any help in the promotion of this theory on You Tube or in the scientific community will be gratefully welcomed. • The Standard Argument Against Free Will In part 2, we see how James was inspired by Charles Darwin to incorporate chance into his model of free will. The standard argument against free will is that neither randomness (indeterminism) nor determinism can explain freedom. We examine the flaws in this classic argument. David Hume reconciled freedom with determinism. William James reconciles it with indeterminism. Web page:
  • Quantum Physics I-II many worlds seems to allow for both a free mind and a determined material world. The material world is an infinite array of possible worlds all existing simultaneously, each of which being completely explained in deterministic terms. The indeterminism comes in because consciousness appears to choose only one of these worlds to be aware of. I think I tend to like Bohm's ideas about the implicate order a bit more than the many words interpretation, but who the hell knows what is really going on down there!
