  • Dr Claire Bolton (UK) Chair: Prof. Chris Coppens (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) The Influence of Type and Spacing on the Design of the Printed Page THE FIRST PRINTERS needed to work to a standard measure when setting line of type or their pages of text would not have locked up tightly and would have fallen out of the chase. The printers' type letter consists of the type face cast on top of the type body. As the typeface changes in size so does the size of the body that supports the face. As important as the type letters are the pieces of spacing that separate the words. The spacing all has to have the same body size as the type letters. This paper will show that they fixed the lengths of their lines of text to a measure based on the square of the type body being used -- the em. Each printer worked to a standard measure that was based on his in-house em. This paper will further show how the em was used for indenting paragraphs, and chapter headings. It will demonstrate that the size of printed large initials was based on the em of the text face being used as were the woodcut illustrations. Aldus Manutius' cul de lampe page settings could not have been achieved without strict control of the line measure and neither could the more complicated texts with glosses. The em -- the square of the body size of the text face being used -- was the basis of al l printed page design. The use of the em as a unit of measurement seems obvious to anyone working with metal type through the succeeding centuries ...
