  • Henry VIII's illnesses A clip on Henry VIII's health during the early part of his reign. In February 1514 Henry contracted smallpox. A letter dating from the Venetian diplomat, Andrea Badoer (dated to 7th Feb) states that the king suffered from an attack of 'measles', although today Henry's illness is identified as smallpox. He recovered, somewhat quickly when judging contemporary accounts. In May 1521 Henry suffered from a fever whilst at Greenwich, details of which are provided in a letter from Wolsey (dated 20th May). He notes that the king 'caught a fever which grew to two tertians'. Henry suffered 'paroxysms in cold and heat', the stages of which were so prolonged that he had little energy to eat. By the time Wolsey was writing, Henry had recovered 'for five or six days', and was very happy to be back to good health. It is now assumed that Henry suffered from malaria. Henry VIII was notoriously afraid of disease, which is pretty understandable when considering the serious nature of many illnesses during his lifetime. Part of his paranoia must have centred on the issue of his legacy - for many years Henry lacked a male heir, thus being taken ill with the possibility of death must have been a daunting prospect for this monarch. Henry's overall approach to illness can be best seen in 1528. By this point Henry was besotted with Anne Boleyn, who caught the 'sweating sickness' that was rife that year. Despite his ardent love for Anne, and his demonstrations of despair over her illness that can ...

  • David Osmond's Battle with Illness David Osmond -"The last few years of my life have changed me forever. Not too many people know this, but I spent a lot of time in a wheel chair due to being paralyzed, numb, and compressed from the chest down. My eyesight was diminishing, I couldn't move my hands very well, and a list of other complications followed. This was not due to any accident or injury. No broken neck or pinched nerve. Of all things, this whole issue started with a mosquito bite. I was diagnosed with the WEST NILE VIRUS. But that wasn't exactly what put me into a wheel chair. It took us a while to figure it out, but my doctors believe that the Virus was a "trigger" to an Auto-Immune Disorder. I was officially diagnosed with a Demyelinating Disorder of the Central Nervous System. In short, I was diagnosed with MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. This causes scarring and lesions on my brain and spine. I no longer have active West Nile Virus in my system, but I AM still fighting this "MS" today. The battle has been going on for about 3 years. Ironically, my dad Alan has lived with MS for over 20 years. He is a fighter and a positive influence for countless numbers of people... including me! Today, I am no longer in the wheel chair, my eyesight is back, my hands move again, I am walking just fine and I am picking up my music with a whole new perspective and passion. I'm not out of the woods by any means, but I am definitely planning on RUNNING out of these woods! I don't know by what means or time frame, but I DO ...

  • Preventing Illnesses and Diseases with Vitamin C Vitamin C - The Most Essential Nutrient Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is a vitamin only because it is a nutrient essential for life that is not manufactured in the body and must be obtained from outside sources. Every living thing on this planet except primates (Including man) and guinea pigs produce their own Vitamin C internally, do not require it in their diet, and do not suffer from a host of diseases and maladies caused by Vitamin C deficiencies. Vitamin C is manufactured internally from glucose by a four-step process, each requiring a specific enzyme. Humans have the first three enzymes but the fourth is damaged and non functional apparently from a genetic mutation that occurred in our distant ancestors. It seems that we really have a species wide genetic disease. Perhaps fixing this genetic defect should be a primary goal for the genetic engineers of this century. There is a fifth step in vitamin C cycle, the conversion of ascorbic acid into mineral ascorbates in the liver. The price of vitamin C deficiency is staggering. Mammals with the enzyme can live 8-10 times their maturity age. Mammals without it have a hard time living to 3-4 times their maturity age. Therefore, if humans had the gene to make their own vitamin C, the human life span could be more like 300 years. Humans have cardiovascular disease and arthritis while other mammals do not. Humans are also more susceptible to viruses and infections than animals with their own vitamin C. What ...
