Taino Indians Counted Out Of Existence There are those who self-identify as Taino Indians today and they are making sure that they are counted in the upcoming 2010 census. The Taínos were the original indigenous people of the Caribbean islands that include Puerto Rico and have long been considered historically extinct. Christopher Columbus encountered the Taínos during his maiden voyage to the New World and according to history books the natives were eventually exterminated by the Spaniards through slavery, mass killings and disease. Present day Taínos argue that they were not entirely killed off and that many of them escaped into the mountains and others intermarried with their conquerors and survived. The Neo-Taínos also claim that during the 1500s the Spanish colonizers did not use a fixed standard for counting people and that the enumerators intentionally reported inaccurate numbers of the Taínos decline to the Queen of Spain in order to get her permission to seek slaves from Africa to be able to continue their work. A 1798 census was done by the Spanish and they found more than 2000 inidans in San German, it also mentions another group of about the same numbers in Anasco barrio Miraflores contradicting earlier historical documents that claimed their extermination in the 1500s. "The events that occurred yesterday in the Big Bear area brought to close an extensive manhunt," San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon told reporters this evening. Researchers Identify Biological Marker That Predicts Susceptibility to the Common Cold Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have identified a biological marker in the immune system that -- beginning at about age 22 -- predicts our ability to fight off the common cold. Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and led by Carnegie Mellon's Sheldon Cohen, the study found that the length of telomeres -- protective cap-like protein complexes at the ends of chromosomes -- predicts resistance to upper respiratory infections in young and midlife adults. Telomere length is a biomarker of aging with telomeres shortening with increasing chronological age. As a cell's telomeres shorten, it loses its ability to function normally and eventually dies. Having shorter telomeres is associated with early onset of aging related diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer, and with mortality in older adults. Shooter In California Rampage Left 4 Dead Is Identified As 20-Year-Old Part-Time Student Ali Syed usworkforce.tk Authorities say a shooting spree through Orange County, Calif., has left four people dead, including the shooter, and two others injured before the man stopped and shot himself to death in a stolen car, police said. The shootings began early Tuesday morning when deputies responded to a call in Ladera Ranch, a sleepy inland town about 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles. They found a woman shot multiple times. Police have identified the gunman as Ali Syed, a 20-year-old unemployed part-time student. Police say Syed lived at the Laderaa Ranch residence where the first victim was killed. Jason Glass, who lives across the street, said he couldn't sleep and was watching TV in his garage with the door partly open when he heard what sounded like gun shots. Then he heard a commotion and the sound of a car speeding away. The suspect, described as a man in his 20s, fled the scene in an SUV, according to the LA Times. Three more people were fatally shot in the next 25 minutes after carjackings in Tustin and Santa Ana. "There are multiple (crime) scenes throughout Tustin and the surrounding areas," said Tustin Police Lt. Paul Garaven. Police say there were a total of six shooting scenes across the county.
