Satyajit Mayor Part 1: What are Membrane Rafts? The plasma membrane demarcates the inside of the living cell from the outside, serving both as the ultimate physical barrier and location where the cell transacts its business with the outside world. The study of the structure of cell membranes continues to be fertile ground for research for many biologists today; the idea of "Membrane Rafts" has only heightened interest in this area. The main focus of this three part series is to explore the concept of "Membrane Rafts". In the first part, we will examine what is popularly understood by the term "Membrane Raft" and ask why this concept was proposed in the first place. This requires an appreciation of the most dominant picture of a biological membrane, "the fluid-mosaic" model. "Membrane Rafts" were hypothesized in response to this model to account for observations of segregation of membrane components made in cell systems. Different proposals to account for the segregation of membrane components and many methodologies used to identify membrane rafts, including the pervasive detergent insolubility method, are also discussed in this lecture. This part is aimed at a general audience or for an advanced undergraduate-level student. See more at

Tiahuanaco Bolivia Tiwanaku (Spanish spellings: Tiahuanaco and Tiahuanacu) is an important Pre-Columbian archaeological site in western Bolivia. Tiwanaku is recognized by Andean scholars as one of the most important precursors to the Inca Empire, flourishing as the ritual and administrative capital of a major state power for approximately five hundred years. The ruins of the ancient city state are near the south-eastern shore of Lake Titicaca in the La Paz Department, Ingavi Province, Tiwanaku Municipality, about 72 km (44 miles) west of La Paz. The site was first recorded in written history by Spanish conquistador and self-acclaimed first chronicler of the Indies Cieza de Leon. Leon stumbled upon the remains of Tiwanaku in 1549 while searching for the Inca capital Collasuyu. Some have hypothesized that Tiwanaku's modern name is related to the Aymara term taypiqala, meaning "stone in the center", alluding to the belief that it lay at the center of the world. However, the name by which Tiwanaku was known to its inhabitants has been lost, as the people of Tiwanaku had no written language. The main architectural appeal of the site comes from the carved images on the blocks along with carved doorways and giant stone monoliths. The stone used to build Tiwanaku was quarried and then transported 40 km or more to the city. The buildings that have been excavated include the Akapana, Akapana East, and Pumapunku stepped platforms, the Kalasasaya and Putuni enclosures and the Semi-Subterranean Temple ...
Noah's Flood: Myth or Reality? P1 Deluge myth: deluge myth or flood myth is a mythical story of a great flood sent by a deity or deities to destroy civilization as an act of divine retribution. It is a widespread theme among many cultures, though it is perhaps best known in modern times through the biblical account of Noah's Ark, the Hindu Puranic story of Manu, through Deucalion in Greek mythology or Utnapishtim in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Black Sea deluge theory: The Black Sea deluge is a hypothesized catastrophic rise in the level of the Black Sea circa 5600 BC due to waters from the Mediterranean Sea breaching a sill in the Bosporus Strait. The hypothesis made headlines when The New York Times published it in December 1996, shortly before it was published in an academic journal. While it is agreed that the sequence of events described did occur, there is debate over the suddenness and magnitude of the events. Two opposing hypotheses have arisen to explain the rise of the Black Sea: gradual and oscillating. The oscillating hypothesis specifies that over the last 30000 years, water has intermittently flowed back and forth between the Black Sea and Aegean Sea in relatively small magnitudes. Flood hypothesis: In 1997, Bill Ryan and Walter Pitman published evidence that a massive flooding of the Black Sea occurred about 5600 BC through the Bosporus, following this scenario. Before that date, glacial mel***er had turned the Black and Caspian Seas into vast freshwater lakes which were draining into the Aegean ...

Migraine physiopathology, treatement and prevention Pathophysiology of migraine headache. Cortex of susceptible people is hyperexcitable. Cortical activity activates the nociceptors of the trigeminal nerves in the meninges. Pain signals from the meninges or nociceptors travel along the upper branch of the trigeminal nerves. Activation of the trigeminal vascular system and secretion of neuropeptides are hypothesized to be central events in the pathogenesis of migraine. Tactile sensitivity competes nociceptive signals. Tactile sensitive signals travelling along the upper branch of the trigeminal nerve counteract pain signals from the meninges or nociceptors. See more at
Beautiful Earth World of Wonder The majesty and beauties of our forsaken planet Earth have gone ignored and unappreciated for too long. Society as a whole, has moved past admiring nature and it's natural wonders. It is our obligation, as mankind, to tender and care for our natural world. The importance nature serves is often unrecognized and ignored. Albert Einstein once hypothesized that if the honey bee were to go extinct, that the Earth would then only have six years of life left. There would be no more bees to pollenate plants and spread vegetation. Thus, herbivores would gradually starve. Carnivores would starve as well due to the lack of prey. And eventually, man would starve too. Such a little creature, like a honey bee, can hold the key to help maintain our very existence. Every creature serves an important purpose on this Earth. And it is our duty as man to care for our planet. Please enjoy the video. It is a musical slideshow presenting the hidden and underappreciated beauties of our planet.
Sound Therapy - Healing your Mind, Body & Spirit for more details: visit: In Sound Therapy, sound is applied to the body or the energy field surrounding your body with various instruments. These instruments can include gongs, crystal singing bowls, tuning forks, indigenous and modern instruments, rattles, etc. as well as the human voice. Sound therapy goes back through time to ancient drum circles and sacred ceremony but recently it has been discovered that human blood cells respond to sound frequencies by changing color and shape. It is hypothesized that sick or rogue cells can be healed or harmonized by sound as they react to sound waves. Modern sound theory was developed and researched in the 1990s by French musician and acupuncturist Fabien Maman and US physicist Joel Sternheimer. It has been claimed that sound frequencies applied to acupuncture points are as effective as needles. Sound works by assisting the body to heal itself and it can be wonderful for relieving stress related disorders, pain, emotional and physical trauma, sleep disorders and much more. .

Thesis 12 Aging is a pattern of declining or de-tuned adaptation that is correlated with adult age only because adult age is at first strongly correlated with declining forces of natural selection. We have all seen sunrise and sunset. In everyday language, we are describing a subjective experience of relative motion. But the sun doesn't actually revolve around the Earth. It is just an optical illusion produced by the spinning Earth. We have all seen the physiological deterioration of aging, or experienced it ourselves, which seems like a physiological process, akin perhaps to the filtering of our blood by our kidneys and the production of urine. Thus molecular and cellular biologists characterize aging in terms of hypothesized chronic physiological processes which are parallel to the production of urine. One of the most popularly hypothesized aging processes among such molecular biologists is free-radical damage, which non-biologists can think of as ***ogous to rusting metal: progressive, cumulative, chemical damage involving oxidation. In terms of the view articulated here, in the 55, this is a legitimate an inference as assuming that the sun revolves around the Earth. Aging seems exactly like cumulative damage, just like it seems to the uninformed that the sun revolves bout the Earth. Let me be clear. The Moon does orbit the Earth, as do many satellites. You can suffer cumulative damage: your knee's connective tissue will be progressively damaged if you repeatedly run marathons ...

Q-parallel universe part 2 The multiverse (or meta-universe, metaverse) is the hypothetical set of multiple possible universes (including our universe) that together comprise everything that physically exists: the entirety of space and time, all forms of matter, energy and momentum, and the physical laws and constants that govern them. The term was coined in 1895 by the American philosopher and psychologist William James.[1] The different universes within the multiverse are sometimes called parallel universes. The structure of the multiverse, the nature of each universe within it and the relationship between the various constituent universes, depend on the specific multiverse hypothesis considered. Multiverses have been hypothesized in cosmology, physics, astronomy, philosophy, transpersonal psychology and fiction, particularly in science fiction and fantasy. In these contexts, parallel universes are also called "alternative universes", "quantum universes", "interpenetrating dimensions", "parallel dimensions", "parallel worlds", "alternative realities", and "alternative timelines", among others.
Life on the Saturn Moon Titan, Consuming Hydrogen and Acetylene * Mystery Hunter / CC All Languages Titan Canyon Country On Saturn's moon Titan, the Cassini spacecraft sees geologic processes that are very similar to what we see on Earth. What is Consuming Hydrogen and Acetylene on Titan? PASADENA, Calif. - Two new papers based on data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft scrutinize the complex chemical activity on the surface of Saturn's moon Titan. While non-biological chemistry offers one possible explanation, some scientists believe these chemical signatures bolster the argument for a primitive, exotic form of life or precursor to life on Titan's surface. According to one theory put forth by astrobiologists, the signatures fulfill two important conditions necessary for a hypothesized "methane-based life." One key finding comes from a paper online now in the journal Icarus that shows hydrogen molecules flowing down through Titan's atmosphere and disappearing at the surface. Another paper online now in the Journal of Geophysical Research maps hydrocarbons on the Titan surface and finds a lack of acetylene. This lack of acetylene is important because that chemical would likely be the best energy source for a methane-based life on Titan, said Chris McKay, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., who proposed a set of conditions necessary for this kind of methane-based life on Titan in 2005. One interpretation of the acetylene data is that the hydrocarbon is being consumed as food. But McKay said the flow of hydrogen is even more critical because ...

NS 201/2008- Lab 8 (Baum) During the experiment we set out to determine the amount of light Elodea absorbed based on five varying light sources. The amount of light absorbed was measured by the amount of oxygen released. We hypothesized that the red and blue lights would have a high absorption rate and large amount of oxygen released because plants absorb red and blue light best. We predicted that the green light would have a low absorption rate and low oxygen production because plants reflect green light and do not absorb it well. The Elodea was placed under regular light and we believed that it would have a high release of oxygen because the light was not altered by any alternative colors. We predicted that there would be virtually no oxygen released in the dark setting because there was no light to initiate photosynthesis and therefore no oxygen would be produced. After that experiment was completed we found that our hypothesis was correct. Regular light had the highest release of oxygen at 1.1cm, which means that the Elodea absorbed this type of light best. The red light produced 1cm of oxygen and the blue light released .35 cm. The green light had a low release of oxygen, .2cm, because the Elodea reflected the light as opposed to absorbing it. In the absence of light there was no production of oxygen, as predicted. There was no light to initiate the photosynthesis and therefore no possibility for a release of oxygen. During the second part of the experiment we used spinach extract to measure ...

Avogadro's Law Check us out at Avogadro's law (sometimes referred to as Avogadro's hypothesis or Avogadro's principle) is a gas law named after Amedeo Avogadro who, in 1811,[1] hypothesized that "Equal volumes of ideal or perfect gases, at the same temperature and pressure, contain the same number of molecules." Thus, the number of molecules in a specific volume of gas is independent of the size or mass of the gas molecules. As an example, equal volumes of molecular hydrogen and nitrogen would contain the same number of molecules, as long as they are at the same temperature and pressure and observe ideal or perfect gas behavior. In practice, for real gases, the law only holds approximately, but the agreement is close enough for the approximation to be useful. The law can be stated mathematically as: . Where: V is the volume of the gas. n is the amount of substance of the gas. k is a proportionality constant. The most significant consequence of Avogadro's law is that the ideal gas constant has the same value for all gases. This means that the constant Where: p is the pressure of the gas T is the temperature in kelvin of the gas has the same value for all gases, independent of the size or mass of the gas molecules. One mole of an ideal gas occupies 22.414 litres (dm³) at STP, and occupies 24.45 litres at SATP (Standard Ambient Temperature and Pressure = 273K and 1 atm). This volume is often referred to as the molar volume of an ideal gas. Real gases may deviate from ...
Fur Elise (by Ludwig van Beethoven) Fur Elise aka Bagatelle in A Minor Though originally written in 1810, "Fur Elise" (aka Bagatelle in a minor), was not published until 1865, 40 years after the composer's death. It was believed that this composition was intended for Therese Malfatti, and was supposed to have been entitled "Fur Therese" (For Therese), a woman Beethoven once courted and proposed marriage to. Malfatti declined in accepting Beethoven's invitation, however, and some have hypothesized that this musical m***cript titled was then changed and dedicated to "Elise" instead. Regardless, this evocative composition was inspired by the intense and effusive emotions provoked by love. And it is with this romantic passion which perhaps distinguishes Beethoven from his classical era counterparts. ***Requested by a listener earlier today*** ***Thanks to my listener who requested this, and brought back memories: 9 years old. Noah's Flood: Myth or Reality? P2 Deluge myth: deluge myth or flood myth is a mythical story of a great flood sent by a deity or deities to destroy civilization as an act of divine retribution.
PROJECT: CRAYFISH NS201: Crayfish Response to Stimuli by Alicia Cruz, Leia Poritz, and Kristin Ward Note: under the video, click "watch in high quality." Hypothesis 1: Slow Versus Fast Motion Prior to testing, you would think the crayfish would respond more to fast motion, just like humans. The reaction may be delayed, but it should have been a more obvious reaction than the reaction to the slow-moving objects. You would expect the crayfish to flee from the fast-moving objects, and remain indifferent to the slow-moving objects. What We Learned... Crayfish have a slow response time, so they cannot even see the fast objects moving toward them. Therefore, they do not respond at all to fast-moving objects. On the other hand, since they can see the slow-moving objects, and these objects appear to be moving quickly because of the crayfish's slow response time, the crayfish quickly flees from the slow-moving objects. Hypothesis 2: Large (Hand) Versus Small (Pencil) Objects You would think that the crayfish would react more to a larger object, because larger objects are seemingly more frightening. What We Learned... The crayfish actually responds sooner to the smaller object than the larger object. However, instead of moving away from the smaller object like it does for the larger object, it moves toward the smaller object. Hypothesis 3: Objects Above Versus Next to the Tank We hypothesized that crayfish would react more to objects next to it versus coming from above because it would be within the ...
Why Was the Vietnam War Fought? Part 2 - US Government Film (1965) 1965 Watch the full film: The Domino Theory, which argued that if one country fell to communist forces, then all of the surrounding countries would follow, was first proposed as policy by the Eisenhower administration. It was, and is still, commonly hypothesized that it applied to Vietnam. John F. Kennedy, then a US senator, said in a speech to the American Friends of Vietnam: "Burma, Thailand, India, Japan, the Philippines and obviously Laos and Cambodia are among those whose security would be threatened if the Red Tide of Communism overflowed into Vietnam." A devout Roman Catholic, Diem was fervently anti-communist, nationalist and socially conservative. Historian Luu Doan Huynh notes, however, that "Diem represented narrow and extremist nationalism coupled with autocracy and nepotism." As a wealthy Catholic, Diem was viewed by many ordinary Vietnamese as part of the elite who had helped the French rule Vietnam; Diem had been interior minister in the colonial government. The majority of Vietnamese people were Buddhist, and were alarmed by actions such as his dedication of the country to the Virgin Mary. Beginning in the summer of 1955, he launched the "Denounce the Communists" campaign, during which communists and other anti-government elements were arrested, imprisoned, tortured, or executed. Diem instituted a policy of death penalty against any activity deemed communist in August 1956. Opponents were labeled Viet Cong ...

Alien Implants pt1 PLAylist: In the first half of the show, Dr. Roger Leir discussed his research and conclusions about the strange objects he has removed from patients over the years. Out of the 17 objects Leir has recovered, he said only one has ever been identified as terrestrial in origin. The rest could be "extremely advanced electronic communication devices which are relating information to someone, somewhere," he hypothesized. According to Leir, that 'someone' is likely a sophisticated, perhaps benevolent, alien civilization seemingly interested in saving humanity through genetic manipulation. Leir was joined by experimental nuclear physicist Bob Koontz, who has also investigated these implanted objects and believes they are remote extraterrestrial listening devices. The objects are composed of iron, cobalt, nickel, and traces of iridium, and emit radio waves, Koontz explained. Iridium is usually only found in meteorites, and ordinary iron does not emit electromagnetic radiation, he added. Even more interesting, Koontz claims these implants can reassemble on their own when broken apart. Based on isotope ratios, Koontz estimated a device taken from one patient to have come from a part of the galaxy approximately 90 million years more evolved than our solar system. At the beginning of the second hour, materials scientist and nanotechnology specialist Steve Colbern shared some of his implant findings. The objects, which are foreign to the host body, curiously do not ...
Hannibal Barca (Part 1 of 3) Hannibal Barca was the son of a Carthaginian general. His highly successful battle strategies are still studied the world over. This is an argument that first starting making the rounds when Denzel Washington was being discussed as portraying Hannibal in an upcoming movie; it's not answerable definitively. Since nothing is known of the Barcid family before Hannibal Barca's father, and there's no undsiputed likeness of him, it's impossible to say with certainty if his lineage was Phoenician (founders of Carthage) or not, and since the Phoenicians weren't really a single ethnicity to begin with, it makes it even more difficult. It's hypothesized by some that the Barcids may have come into Carthage from Cyrene, which brings the possibility of Greek lineage into play. If not, it's still possible in the centuries that lapsed between the Phoenician founding of Carthage and Hamlicar Barca's emergence that there would have been numerous intermarriages in that family tree with other groups such as Berber, Numidian, Greek, etc. (Hannibal Barca's sister married a Numidian for instance.) In the chance the Barcids were orginally Phoenician and the lineage remained pure, then his ethonology would be most similar to that of today's typical Lebanese. Contemporary portrayals of the Barcid family (and unrelated Carthaginian nobility/leadership) typically show them with Eastern Mediterranean features, which support the claims of those who say he was white. A coin minted in ...
Large Hadron Collider Sabotaged by Boson? Is it possible that the LHC is preventing itself from discovering the Higgs boson? As the New York Times puts it: "the hypothesized Higgs boson... might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward through time and stop the collider before it could make one, like a time traveler who goes back in time to kill his grandfather." Pt. 1 of 2 Alan Jones speaks with Prof. Richard S. Lindzen regarding the climate change hoax 2 Richard Siegmund Lindzen (born February 8, 1940, Webster, Massachusetts) is an American atmospheric physicist and Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Lindzen is known for his work in the dynamics of the middle atmosphere, atmospheric tides and ozone photochemistry. He has published more than 200 books and scientific papers.[1] He was the lead author of Chapter 7, 'Physical Climate Processes and Feedbacks,' of the IPCC Third Assessment Report on climate change. He has been a critic of some global warming theories and the alleged political pressures on climate scientists. He hypothesized that the Earth may act like an infrared iris; increased sea surface temperature in the tropics would result in reduced cirrus clouds and thus more infrared radiation leakage from Earth's atmosphere.[2] This hypothesis suggested a negative feedback which would counter the effects of CO2 warming.
Thesis 12 part 2 Event Horizon Thesis 12 part 2 Event Horizon Aging is a pattern of declining or de-tuned adaptation that is correlated with adult age only because adult age is at first strongly correlated with declining forces of natural selection. You can suffer cumulative damage: your knee's connective tissue will be progressively damaged ...
Free Market Capitalism FAILS again The trap is sprung. Sorry, Lee, but it won't be that easy for you. WHY LEE'S CHARACTERIZATION OF MY VIDEO IS A STRAWMAN 1. I am a capitalist. I am merely not a free market capitalist. I believe in regulation. 2. I never said that capitalism and trade don't create wealth. I merely had the courage to point out that fraud and exploitation are a crucial element of the money-making process. 3. I never said that it should be mandated that companies share their profits with employees, I merely hypothesized that this was the natural philosophical result of the statement below. WHY FREE MARKET IS FREE MARXIST: Free Market Capitalism says we own our own labor: ". . . in a free-market system, every person has a property right over his own person and his own labor and can make free contracts for those services." Murray Rothbard, Free Market Capitalist Sometimes referred to as "the founder of libertarianism" THE THREE TYPES OF VALUE: 1. Objective Value/Baseline Value/Intrinsic Value Value based on "need" in relation to the achievement of sustained physical and psychological health. 2. Subjective Value Value based on individual perception of value; personal perceptions of value not shared by others (or shared by a select few). 3. Intersubjective Value Value based on group perception of value; mass perception of value.

(or CIA pretending to be Plejarans speaking through remote sound-to-skull technology ) The images of fiber filaments and hexagonal artifacts are photos of these artifacts that have come out of people that suffer with "morgellons syndrome". It is hypothesized that this phenomena are evidence of their genetic change. 'Morgellons' Sufferers consistently report symptoms in EXACT PARALLEL with 'Kundalini Symptoms". Google KUNDALINI SYMPTOMS. It is said that between the ages of 13 and 33, Christ ventured to India and studied with adept Yogis and activated his Kundalini, and metamorphosed into his Realized self during his resurrection. If you're enduring this process, don't get caught in the psychotic confusion of the "it's bugs" mentality. That's the opposite way you want to go. You will only spiral downwards into chaos and misery. Take extremely good care of yourselves through these changing times.

World renowned Quantum Physicist, John Hagelin Ph.D explains. Dr John Hagelin I am going to show you very quickly some of the early research, this is the first study and I won't go into great detail except to say that this experiment was performed in the Middle East during the peak of the Lebanon War in the early 1980's. It was hypothesized, based on many different smaller experiments that if enough people were collectively experiencing and stimulating this fundamental powerful field of peace within that there would be radiated influence of peace that would effect the behavior of people throughout society, people would wake up in the morning a decide "hey I don't think I'll kill anybody today." What a novel thought, that you know with some expanded comprehension and less narrowly cramped, narrowly self centered, acutely stressed vision that the desperate acts of terrorism simply don't really have a fertile field to fall on. A thousand people on average practiced Transcendental Meditation in Jerusalem to see whether they could influence neighboring Lebanon in reducing war and terrorism and eventually World Peace. John Hagelin is a world renowned quantum physicist who has been involved in the research on group meditation for improving the quality of life in society.
Mechanical veined ornithopter in forward flight From the paper by Hiroto Tanaka and Isao Shimoyama entitled "Forward flight of swallowtail butterfly with simple flapping motion," Bioinspiration & Biomimetics Volume 5, Number 2 Paper 026003, 2010. Abstract: Unlike other flying insects, the wing motion of swallowtail butterflies is basically limited to flapping because their fore wings partly overlap their hind wings, structurally restricting the feathering needed for active control of aerodynamic force. Hence, it can be hypothesized that the flight of swallowtail butterflies is realized with simple flapping, requiring little feedback control of the feathering angle. To verify this hypothesis, we fabricated an artificial butterfly mimicking the wing motion and wing shape of a swallowtail butterfly and ***yzed its flights using images taken with a high-speed video camera. The results demonstrated that stable forward flight could be realized without active feathering or feedback control of the wing motion. During the flights, the artificial butterfly's body moved up and down passively in synchronization with the flapping, and the artificial butterfly followed an undulating flight trajectory like an actual swallowtail butterfly. Without feedback control of the wing motion, the body movement is directly affected by change of aerodynamic force due to the wing deformation; the degree of deformation was determined by the wing venation. Unlike a veinless wing, a mimic wing with veins generated a much higher lift ...
The Importance of Sleep The Purpose of this project was to show the importance of sleep. I chose to create a creative and fun video that represents the sleep disorders that I hypothesized affected the common student of OHS. I hypothesized that students of OHS suffered from sleep deprivation due to caffeine intake, electronic device addiction, stress, and disruption. This supports the theme of scientific process in the method of hypothesis, procedure, observation, and conclusion. the songs used throughout the movie was: Cello Suit No.1 in G Major by Bach I Need Some Sleep by the Eels Instrumental to Breathe Me by Sia All credit for the songs goes to them.
The Universe - Alien Galaxies (History Channel ® 2007) Galaxy Formation and Evolution Galaxy formation is hypothesized to occur, from structure formation theories, as a result of tiny quantum fluctuations in the aftermath after the Big Bang. The simplest model for this that is general agreement with observed phenomena is the Cold Dark Matter cosmology; that is to say that clustering and merging is how galaxies gain in mass, and can also determine their shape and structure. Formation of the first galaxies After the Big Bang, the Universe, for a time, was remarkably homogeneous, as can be observed in the Cosmic Microwave Backround. There was little to no structure in the universe, and thus no galaxies. All the galactic structures that we see today were formed as a consequence of the growth of the primordial fluctuations, which are small changes in the density of the universe in a confined region. As the universe cooled clumps of dark matter began to condense, and within them gas began to condense. The primordial fluctuations gravitationally attracted gas and dark matter to the denser areas, and thus the seeds that would later become galaxies were formed. These structures constitued the first galaxies. At this point the universe was almost exclusively composed of hydrogen, helium and dark matter. Soon after the first proto-galaxies formed the hydrogen and helium gas within them began to condense and make the first stars. Thus the first galaxies were then formed in 2007 the Keck telescope found six star forming galaxies about ...
End of the World ? Large Hadron Collider The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator, intended to collide opposing particle beams of either protons at an energy of 7 TeV per particle, or lead nuclei at an energy of 574 TeV per nucleus. It is expected that it will address the most fundamental questions of physics, which seem to block further progress in understanding the deepest laws of nature. The LHC lies in a tunnel 27 kilometres (17 mi) in circumference, as much as 175 metres (570 ft) beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland. The Large Hadron Collider was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) with the intention of testing various predictions of high-energy physics, including the existence of the hypothesized Higgs boson[1] and of the large family of new particles predicted by supersymmetry.[2] It is funded by and built in collaboration with over 10000 scientists and engineers from over 100 countries as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories.[3] On 10 September 2008, the proton beams were successfully circulated in the main ring of the LHC for the first time.[4] On 19 September 2008, the operations were halted due to a serious fault between two superconducting bending magnets.[5] Repairing the resulting damage and installing additional safety features took over a year.[6][7] On 20 November 2009 the proton beams were successfully circulated again.[8] On 23 November 2009, the first protonproton collisions were ...
Borderline: Redrawing the map of Great Britain from a network of human interactions Do regional boundaries defined by governments respect the more natural ways that people interact across space? This paper proposes a novel, fine-grained approach to regional delineation, based on ***yzing networks of billions of individual human transactions. Given a geographical area and some measure of the strength of links between its inhabitants, we show how to partition the area into smaller, non-overlapping regions while minimizing the disruption to each person's links. We tested our method on the largest non-Internet human network, inferred from a large telecommunications database in Great Britain. Our partitioning algorithm yields geographically cohesive regions that correspond remarkably well with administrative regions, while unveiling unexpected spatial structures that had previously only been hypothesized in the literature. We also quantify the effects of partitioning, showing for instance that the effects of a possible secession of Wales from Great Britain would be twice as disruptive for the human network than that of Scotland.
