  • Enchanting El Nido Episode 6 - Small Lagoon Today, we invite you to join us as we explore one of the most beautiful places that can be found here in El Nido, the Small Lagoon. The Small Lagoon is located on Miniloc Island, just a short kayak ride away from Miniloc Island Resort. The travel time from the resort to the lagoon is about 15-20 minutes. The Small Lagoon also lies right next to the Big Lagoon, which we featured in our last Enchanting El Nido episode. Unlike the Big Lagoon, which is accessible by boat, the Small Lagoon is only accessible by kayak, as the entrance is too small for boats to pass through. And during high tide, even kayaks cannot pass through as the high water level would partially or completely block the entrance. A person would then have to swim through in order to get in. Upon entering the Small Lagoon, one is quickly transported into an entirely different world, into a place where nature still reigns supreme. Surrounded by the towering limestone cliffs El Nido is known for, a person can spend a good hour just listening to the calming sounds of nature. Like the Big Lagoon, scientists hypothesize that the Small Lagoon was once a cave whose roof collapsed upon itself, creating what is known as a sinkhole. Despite the harsh conditions of the limestone cliffs, many species of plants do manage to thrive, providing food and shelter for birds and other animals. The calm and clear waters of the Lagoon also provide an ideal shelter and breeding ground for many species of fish and other marine ...

  • Gary Coté - Botany 2010 Microscopic Crystals in Aroid Flowers: A Role in Gamete Protection? Many plants have idioblast cells which produce crystals of calcium oxalate. Crystal idioblasts are well known in the vegetative tissues of species in the Araceae. Many aroid species have a type of crystal idioblast, termed the biforine, which is able to forcibly expel the crystals. It has often been proposed that these crystals, particularly those in biforines, might play a role in defending against herbivory. If this is true we would hypothesize that crystals would be abundant in reproductive tissues, arrayed so as to protect the pollen and ovules without interfering with pollinators. To test this, we examined floral tissues from 21 aroid species in 12 tribes, collected from greenhouse material and from the wild in Connecticut and Virginia (USA) and French Guiana. These species represented a variety of pollination strategies, including bribing pollinators with edible sterile flowers (staminodia). Tepals, in those species which had them, always contained crystals. Crystals were common in gynoecial walls, but generally absent from the ovules themselves. Crystals were found the connectives and filaments of stamens, particularly in those species where stamens fuse into synandria. Dense strands of biforine-like cells were seen in synandria. However, crystals were rare to absent in anthers, except that species of Caladieae and Dieffenbachieae contain prismatic crystals among the pollen. The results are ...

  • Large Hadron Collider Experiment Large Hadron Collider Experiment. Randall Niles investigates the latest developments with the world's largest experimental machine. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) just outside Geneva, Switzerland, is one of the most profound scientific projects ever conceived. It is located between France and Switzerland and operated by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Scientists from around the world hope it will be fully operational in September 2009. The ultimate goal of the LHC is to answer huge scientific questions about the sub-atomic world, the massive cosmos, and their finely-tuned relationship. Initially, its an attempt to observe theoretical particles that scientists hypothesize should be there. Ultimately, its an attempt to understand the creation of the cosmos and the powerful complexity and design that permeates the particle realm. The Large Hadron Collider is the largest machine in the world. The two accelerator rings are five miles in diameter and nearly 17 miles in circumference. It is the worlds largest refrigeration system with 9600 magnets cooled to -271 degrees centigrade. It has four large detectors weighing from eleven to 25 million pounds each, and two smaller detectors. Large Hadron Collider Experiment - What is a Hadron? • One Life To Live Epi On 4-2-09 Part 1 of 5 Part 1 Summary: Despite the fact that she is tortured by her own actions, Gigi breaks up with Rex in order to save Shane. Rex refuses to accept it and tries to convince her that they belong together and he can forgive her for what happened with Brody, but Gigi stands firm. Opposite this, Brody meets Stacy and confronts her about what she's done and tells her she can never get Rex to lover her even if she does break up Rex and Gigi. Stacy seems to be affected by this and it looks like she might come clean with Rex and Gigi. But upon hearing that they have broken up, she moves forward with her plan and tells them that she is a match for Shane and can save his life. Todd tries to seduce Tea in a Todd-like fashion and actually tells her she can have him if she will go back to the judge and tell her that the John/Blair union is a sham so he can get his kids back. Tea is flabbergasted but he does still get to her. While he talks to Tea, we can see Zach watching Todd's every move, unseen. John and Fish hypothesize about Zach's motives and availability to be the killer and we see Zach looking at Todd murderously. Zach charges his meal to Todd and goes. Jessica and Marty lament their failed attempts at "going for it" with Brody and John. Dorian tries to make Ray jealous with Jackie. Cristian and Layla get locked in the steam room and argue as they do ... but when she strips down to her underwear in the heat, there is obviously more heat between them than in the air.
  • UFO Invasion of the 5th Kind On August 1, 2009 at night which was pretty much a couple of weeks after I had moved to Mesa, AZ, I saw a ball of light (Globe UFO) that traverse the sky identical to my first UFO sighting (Globe UFO) which I had back in April of 2003 in Pensacola, FL. I also had more sightings of these Globe UFOs in Mesa, AZ which the closes Globe UFO sighting I had was in April of 2010. And it was in that sighting which opened the doorways to discovering what those Globes UFOs were really consisted as in identity. That April 2010 sighting allowed me extreme examination of the object via the 300mm lens since that UFO was at an extreme close-up proximity to my location. And when I peered through the viewer of that 300mm camera's lens, it definably appeared to have a solid, glowing white, globe shape and nothing more to it. However, it was that sighting which via some of its ghost images or artifacts as some professionals call them (which was captured on digital camera because of the brightness of that globe UFO light) that thereby allowed me to discover and compare other UFOs pictures that I had captured which I had called those sightings Entity UFOs - - some people may had called them morphing UFOs, or Marfa Lights, or UFO variables in the Spanish community. The ghost images I captured in the Globe UFO pictures were nearly identical in some of the Entity UFOs pictures I had captured; however, I needed more pictures to verify further if that hypothesis was correct. Since I moved to Mesa ...

  • Physical Markers of Trans***uals - Follow-up Comments Someone rebutted my earlier video that suggested there might be physical attributes associated with transgenderism by saying "There's is no scientific evidence to support your hypothesis. Just because you believe something to be true doesn't make it so." Well, if there's no scientific evidence to support it, then there's none to refute it either. Just because you don't believe something to be true, doesn't mean it isn't. The scientific method is to observe something, then come up with a hypothesis to explain what it means. Next, test the hypothesis again obvervation through experimentation and, finally, develop a theory to explain the results of the experiement. And that's what I've suggested here - 1. Observe the arm angle percentage on TG folk. 2. Hypothesize that being mentally TG comes with associated physical TG traits as well. 3. Test hypothesis by studying other female physical traits that TG folk have that the general population of males doesn't. 4. Devise a theory to explain why this should be so. So, go to it! Make the case for or against!

  • Evolution - Greatly Animated Presentation Explaining the Biological factor of Evolution Learn about evolution in a thrilling animated video with familiar background music... Subscribe, Rate, Comment and visit my website! About: This Video is all about the biological factor of evolution. Evolution is simply the way species acquire favorable traits over long periods of time in a population. We have Charles Darwin to thank for his theory of Evolution and the work he did to prove it. All we have to do is understand it and we can to that by watching this animated video on evolution itself. -----Summary of Darwin's Theory of Evolution---- • A species is a population of organisms that interbreeds and has fertile offspring. How do organisms adapt? • Living organisms have descended with modifications from species that lived before them. • What is Natural selection explains how this evolution has happened: How does Natural Selection work? —More organisms are produced than can survive because of limited resources. —Organisms struggle for the necessities of life; there is competition for resources. How did life Start? — Individuals within a population vary in their traits; some of these traits are heritable -- passed on to offspring. — Some variants are better adapted to survive and reproduce under local conditions than others. — Better-adapted individuals (the "fit enough") are more likely to survive and reproduce, thereby passing on copies of their genes to the next generation. — Species whose individuals are best adapted survive; others become ...

  • Dance your PhD 2010: Mechanisms of lateral inhibition between olfactory bulb glomeruli Inhaled odor molecules bind to receptors located on olfactory sensory neurons in the nasal cavity. The signal from odor receptors is transmitted along the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb. The surface of the olfactory bulb is covered with spherical structures called glomeruli, each composed of a bundle of neuronal processes surrounded by cell bodies. Each glomerulus receives input from only one subtype of odor receptor, and each odor activates a unique set of receptors and therefore a unique pattern of glomeruli. I use electrophysiological recordings from rat olfactory bulb slices to examine the functional connections between cells. We hypothesize that an activated glomerulus can inhibit the activation of nearby glomeruli through short axon cells, which connect groups of ten to twenty glomeruli. Lateral inhibition through short axon cells could increase the contrast between similar odors with nearly identical glomerular activation patterns, making it easier for animals to differentiate highly similar odors. In the dance, I have simplified the system so that each odor sniffed by the dog activates one glomerulus. Each segment starts with the dog inhaling the odor, which is then represented in dance form as a ball that is caught by an odor receptor. The receptor neuron then becomes activated and the odor signal travels along the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb where it tags the appropriate glomerulus to activate it. The dancers in each circle represent the ...

I realised I got the best action and encounters when I moved away from the open circuit divers, so I found a place to sit out, between some rocks and waited, then after 10 minutes this school of Hammerheads passed over me and to the sides, but then look how they turn, and circle back and come straight at me, buzzing me, some were so close I could have touched them. I hypothesize that they could sense the electronics in the rebreather, and the fact I was not making bubbles and silent aroused their curiosity.

  • Americas East Coast Mega Tsunami Canary Islands explained Americas East Coast Megatsunami Canary Islands Geologists S. Day and S. Ward consider that a megatsunami could be generated during a future eruption involving the Cumbre Vieja on the volcanic ocean island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands.[12][13] In 1949, the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted at its Duraznero, Hoyo Negro and San Juan vents. During this eruption, an earthquake with an epicentre near the village of Jedy occurred. The following day Rubio Bonelli, a local geologist, visited the summit area and discovered that a fissure about 2.5 km long had opened on the eastern side of the summit. As a result, the western half of the Cumbre Vieja (which is the volcanically active arm of a triple-armed rift) had slipped about 2 m downwards and 1 m westwards towards the Atlantic Ocean[citation needed]. The Cumbre Vieja volcano is currently in a dormant stage, but will almost certainly erupt again in the future. Day and Ward hypothesize[12][13] that if such an eruption causes the western flank to fail, a megatsunami will be generated. La Palma is currently the most volcanically active island in the Canary Islands Archipelago. It is likely that several eruptions would be required before failure would occur on Cumbre Vieja.[12][13] However, the western half of the volcano has an approximate volume of 500 km3 (5 x 1011 m3) and an estimated mass of 1.5 x 1015 kg. If it were to catastrophically slide into the ocean, it could generate a wave with an initial height of ...
  • An Immersive Experience: Teaching Real-World Problems with Mathematica Paul Abbott, a faculty member in the School of Physics at The University of Western Australia, wants to teach his students a tool that they can use to tackle real-world problems--not only in his physics and mathematics courses, but throughout their studies and into their professional careers. Mathematica provides Abbott and his students an immersing and engaging environment to investigate problems\[LongDash]from calculating and visualizing results to documenting and presenting findings. Abbott uses Mathematica to build all of his course materials, including lecture slide shows, student assignments, and exams. His students use Mathematica to visualize surfaces, explore concepts using interactive examples, hypothesize results, and check their work. According to Abbott, "What I love is watching the 'Aha' moment, the moment when they say, 'Oh I get that concept.' And they get more concepts with the assistance of Mathematica. It gives them confidence. They go 'Wow, I can do this,' and that's the most exciting thing about teaching." Abbott says Mathematica's free-form linguistic input and rich Documentation Center make it easy for educators and students to get started with Mathematica and quickly move from basic computations and visualizations to exploring real-world problems and research. • Does Library Instruction Make a Difference? - Melissa Bowles-Terry This talk was presented as part of the 2nd Biennial Kathleen A Zar Symposium at the University of Chicago. For more about the symposium visit: www.lib.uchicago.edu Librarians hope to affect student achievement by meeting students in the classroom. At University of Wyoming, the number of instruction sessions offered by librarians has increased from 127 sessions in 2001 to 357 sessions in 2009, and our institution is part of a national trend. But does all the time and effort expended on library instruction help students succeed academically? This study will attempt to establish a connection between library instruction and student achievement via a focus group with graduating seniors and a transcript ***ysis correlating students' library instruction experience to GPA. I hypothesize that seniors who have had library instruction in their sophomore, junior, or senior year (in addition to the expected instruction in their freshman year) will be more successful than students who did not have library instruction after their freshman year. Hopefully, students who attend multiple library instruction sessions at UW succeed, achieve, and learn more than those who do not. Learning more about the student experience via the focus group and ***ysis of a large sample of senior transcripts will give us more information about which students receive library instruction, at what point they receive it, and how we can improve the library instruction program for students in different programs ...

  • Gears of War 2 Shotgun Inconsistancy Theory Pop Shot- part 2 Just sharing theories about why I feel the shotgun is slightly inconsistent. We know the bullets come from the camera when pop-shot. A problem that could occurs is that when point blank this can cause problems with the ability for a player to pop shot a point blank opponent at a low level. In the example I aim my character all the way at the ground and pop shot. The bullets hit point blank at head height. I would hypothesize that in GOW1 the camera being behind the player and bullets originating behind the player creates the ability to pop-shot point blank better. As there is distance to hit where your avatar is facing. (Although there were problems killing players behind you) While in GOW2 the bullets travel from the reticule on screen. Since the camera changes when you are point blank on structures or players in certain scenarios this can create a bit of inconsistent expectations/ results. I think this should be revisited when working through the shotgun mechanics in GOW3 I would hypothesize that maybe bullet travel from inside the players model's body to the point of contact, may produce better results.
  • Video review of the Toys R Us Exclusive Commemorative Edition "Perceptor" Perceptor is a scientist, one of the most astute minds the whole of Cybertron can offer. He is perpetually seeking the continued quest for knowledge, and his discoveries have repeatedly proven invaluable. Though his specialties lie in metallurgy, electrical engineering, and additional sciences closely concomitant to Transformer physiology, his thirst for knowledge has made him kind of a scientific jack-of-all-trades. One of Perceptor's most infamous mannerisms is the tendency in which he verbally communicates using scientific terminology. This has the unforeseen result of exasperating and occasionally frustrating his comrades. One might hypothesize that the jovial mechanoid is unaware that not everyone with whom he seeks to communicate shares his extensive vocabulary. Engaging in physical melee is not his preferred activity. He is content to make his contributions to the Autobot cause in the manner in which he deems sufficient, but will engage in combat if the situation requires. Optimus Prime often relies on Perceptor's perspicacity, and considers him as inestimable as any of his officers.
