An example of saturated fat is butter. Saturated fats are also found in meat products, especially red meat and poultry. Unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature. In unsaturated fats, there are one or more double covalent bonds. Unsaturated fats are healthier than saturated fats. Transitive fats are created by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil through a process called hydrogenation. Some examples of food with transitive fat are cookies, fried foods, and donuts. Hydrogenation increases their shelf life and makes them solid at room temperature. Humans need lipids to survive but too many lipids are unhealthy.

  • Water Attracted By Static Electricity Here's a quick and dirty (and poorly filmed!) demonstration that illustrates the polarity of water molecules. Water is attracted to the electrostatic charge on the water bottle because the hydrogen and oxygen atoms share electrons unevenly, resulting in partial positive charges (on the hydrogens) and a partial negative charge (on the oxygen). Since I have created an excess of negative charge on the water bottle, the positive hydrogen side of the water molecules is attracted to the bottle. If you could zoom in far enough, you would see most of the water molecules oriented to the bottle so that their hydrogen sides were facing it. Pretty cool, huh? Learn more at
