In 1993, he became NHL commissioner with a mandate to grow the game. So, how's he done? Well, under Bettman, the NHL has added six teams - most of them in the southern United States, while both Quebec and Winnipeg moved south. When Bettman took over, the league's revenue was 400 million dollars a year. Now, it's more than two billion. But some of those US teams are struggling, especially Nashville and Phoenix - which is said to be in real trouble. There was also the lockout that shut down the entire '04-05 season. Bettman has also had to deal with a few hits to the NHL's image. There was the "Bertuzzi Moore" incident, Sean Avery's comments and most recently - with the death of Don Sanderson in a senior league game, there are questions about whether the NHL should ban fighting.

The next season, he was traded to the LA Kings, and built a reputation as a tough guy to play against and someone who speaks his mind. Some people loved his style. Others? Not so much. Sean got hit with the label "Most Hated Man in the NHL." Fast-forward to 2007, Sean went to the New York Rangers and established himself as a valuable player, not just a *** disturber. But in last season's playoffs Sean stirred things up again - screening New Jersey's Martin Brodeur like it had never been done before. The NHL wasn't amused and had to create a new rule to stop it. Off the ice, Sean is a character too. He loves the Hollywood life, he's dated celebrities and spent this past summer as an intern at Vogue. This year, Avery's starring in two new lineups - the GAP fall 2008 campaign and the Dallas Stars, after he was signed by his former roommate, general manager Brett Hull.

In the days after the web attacks President Bill Clinton held a special cyber security summit at the White House. And the FBI and the RCMP were on the case. In the end, the Mounties got their man, only he wasn't quite a man yet. He turned out to be a 15 year old kid from Montreal who goes by the handle "mafiaboy." The famous and the infamous, the scandal-plagued and the powerful - they've all told their stories to Larry. As a kid, Larry dreamed of working in radio, but didn't have the grades to go to college. So, he hoofed it to Miami at 22 and landed a gig doing odd-jobs at a small radio station. When an announcer walked off the job, Larry ended up on-air for the first time. That was May 1st, 1957. Over the next decade, he built his reputation - interviewing the likes of Jackie Gleason, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King. But Larry was a gambler and a big spender and in the early 70's he plead no contest to passing bad cheques. But Laryy bounced back - eventually landing a national late night radio call-in show. That led to his move to TV and the launch of 'Larry King Live' in 1985. The show was a hit and Larry became one of CNN's first stars. But it hasn't always been easy - in '87, he suffered a life-changing heart attack and over the years he's been married seven times to six women - with kids ranging in age from 8 to 50. He tells the whole story in his new autobiography 'My Remarkable Journey.'
  • Kings of Leon - The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos www.cbc.ca How did a bunch of home-schooled boys from Tennessee go on to sell out stadiums around the world? Well, Caleb, Nathan and Jared Followill are brothers and along with their first cousin Matthew they are 'Kings Of Leon.' The brothers grew up driving across the south with their dad - a Pentecostal preacher. They didn't really have a home, they lived on the road, going from one church service to the next, sleeping in hotels, churches, even their car. They didn't listen to rock music, or watch TV. But just over ten years ago, everything changed. Their dad left the church and divorced his wife. So, the boys started to get into music, formed a band and by 2002, 'Kings of Leon' had interest from nine labels. After a bidding war, the guys released their debut EP in 2003. Five years of touring and four records latern'Kings of Leon' sells out arenas now, in under an hour. They're huge in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. And are starting to hit it big in the US. They've opened for U2, Bob Dylan and Pearl Jam. 'Rolling Stone' magazine recently asked "How good can these guys get?"nTheir new album is called 'Only By The Night.' It debuted in the top 5 in Canada, with the hit single '*** on Fire.'

  • Lewis Black on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos www.cbc.ca Lewis Black - a man who is not afraid to say, or yell, or shout, or rant, whatever is on his mind. Lewis' comedy is fueled by genuine outrage at the lunacy of American society. Born and raised in and around Washington, DC., his dad introduced him to theatre and Lewis planned on spending his life as a playwright. In the 80's, he moved to New York, where he wrote and directed for the stage. He often MC'd before his plays and next thing ya know - he's doing stand up. Eventually, he caught the eye of Hollywood producers, made some appearances in movies like "Hannah And Her Sisters" and "Jacob's Ladder", then, in 1997, Lewis got his big break. He scored a segment on the 'Daily Show' called "Back in Black". Those appearances have made Lewis a star. Since then, he's had his very own comedy specials, released a bunch of CD's and even won a Grammy for best comedy album. That was for his work 'The Carnegie Hall Performance". These days, Lewis has his own show "The Root of All Evil".
  • James Cameron on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos www.cbc.ca 11 Oscars - including best picture and best director. So, how did James get here. Well, he grew up in a small Ontario town - Chippawa. And from a young age, he was obviously talented. When he was 15, he saw Stanley Kubrick's film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. And James knew he wanted to make movies. Eventually, he went to college... Dropped out... And bounced around between jobs How did a small town kid from Chippawa, Ontario go on to dominate Hollywood and win 11 Oscars in the process? Well, for James Cameron it started in 1981 - when he made his directorial debut, with 'Pirahna Two: The Spawning.' and if you're wondering, yes - it's bad as it sounds. From there, he wrote the screenplay for 'Rambo: First Blood Part Two' and subsequently directed 'The Terminator'. Along the way, James wrote and directed another classic - 'Aliens,' with Sigourney Weaver. Plus, there was 'The Abyss', 'True Lies' and every 'Terminator' sequel including the upcoming 'Terminator Salvation.' Since the late 90's, James has put off Hollywood films to make documentaries. But now, he's got another huge feature in the works... 'Avatar' - a computer generated 3D epic due to be released late next year.
  • Gordon Ramsay on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos www.cbc.ca Gordon Ramsay started his professional life with the Glasgow Rangers, in the Scottish premier soccer league. He went from being a *** idol, to a serious actor working with some of Hollywood's biggest stars. Along the way he starred in movies like "Scream 2" and "Skulls." He played a gay ***ager in "Cruel Intentions" along with the lovely Sarah Michelle Gellar. When Dawson's Creek ended in 2002 Josh went on to look for "more mature" films. There was "I Love Your Work" alongside Giovanni Ribisi and Christina Ricci. 'Aurora Borealis' with Donald Sutherland and Juliette Lewis and 'Bobby' with Anthony Hopkins and Helen Hunt. Last year, Joshua returned to TV as Peter Bishop, in the series "Fringe." • Dana White on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos www.cbc.ca In 2001, Dana White became president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The company was 44 million dollars in the hole. Fast forward to 2006. The UFC set a pay-per-view sales record - raking in more than 220 million dollars in revenue. So, how'd he do it? When Dana came on the scene, Mixed Martial Arts - or MMA - was a fringe sport. It was banned in 36 states. The pay-per-view providers wanted out and the fights were considered too bloody, brutal and violent. Even politicians were morally outraged. So, Dana reacted. He cleaned up the rules, brought in weight classes and put in a judging system. He marketed the fighters' personalities and emphasized their athletic ability. He also made the fights more crowd friendly. Then he created a reality show called 'The Ultimate Fighter.' The show became huge and before you could tap out, the UFC became the fastest growing sport in America.

  • Adrien Brody on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos www.cbc.ca That's when the world really took notice of Adrien, but he'd already been making movies for more than a decade. Growing up in Queens, New York, Adrien was encouraged by his parents to act so as to keep out of trouble. He got his first TV acting role at 15 and five years later, he hit the big screen in the Depression-era drama 'King of the Hill.' Then, in 1998, Adrien's break-out role - at least that's what he thought. Adrien got cast as 'Corporal Fife' in a little war flick called 'The Thin Red Line.' But when he went to the premiere, he found most of his scenes had been left on the editing room floor. He's certainly made up for it since though. Adrien rocked as a bi***ual punk kid-slash-murder suspect in 'Summer of Sam' and played a Jewish boy coming of age in the 50's flick 'Liberty Heights.' Then came the role that got Adrien that pretty little gold statue - 'The Pianist.' Since then, Adrien's played the village idiot in 'The Village', a love struck screenwriter in 'King Kong' and one of three dysfunctional brothers on a journey across India in 'The Darjeeling Limited.' Adrien's latest role: a professional con man, alongside Mark Ruffalo. They're 'The Brothers Bloom' and they're out to pull their very last con.
