James P. Johnson - Honeysuckle Rose (1930) James P. Johnson (James Price Johnson, also known as Jimmy Johnson, (Feb.1,1894 - Nov.17,1955)) was an American pianist and composer. A pioneer of the stride style of jazz piano, he was a model for Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum and Fats Waller. Johnson composed many hit tunes including "Charleston" and "Carolina Shout" and remained the acknowledged king of New York jazz pianists until he was dethroned c. 1933 by the recently arrived Art Tatum. His influence and success is often overlooked. The proximity to New York meant that the full cosmopolitan spectrum of the city's musical experience, from bars, to cabarets, to the symphony, were at the young Johnson's disposal. In 1908 his family moved to the San Juan Hill (near where Lincoln Center stands today) section of New York City. With perfect pitch and excellent recall he was soon able to pick out on the piano tunes that he had heard. Johnson grew up listening the ragtime of Scott Joplin and always retained links to the ragtime era, playing Joplin's "Maple Leaf", as well as the more modern (according to Johnson) and demanding, "Euphonic Sounds". Johnson, like Joplin, when the royalties from his compositions made him financially secure, pursued a lifelong ambition of writing orchestral works. Before 1920 Johnson had gained a reputation as a pianist on the East coast on a par with Eubie Blake and Luckey Roberts and made dozens of superb player piano roll recordings for Aeolian, Perfection (the label of the Standard ...

Honeysuckle Rose Jonathan Russell is joined by NY Swing made up of Bucky Pizzarelli, John Bunch and Phil Flanigan from a concert at Centenary College. Bucky Pizzarelli Bucky Pizzarelli was considered the only guitarist next to George Van Eps, to play the seven-string electric guitar exclusively. Bucky is a dedicated preservationist of the old guitar music and the early styles of playing. Recordings like Love Songs and NY Swing present a picture of the complete jazz musician and guitarist who moves effortlessly from the daunting format of the solo guitar to playing solid, swinging rhythm and single string solos in an ensemble setting. John Bunch A Legendary Piano player - currently co-leads New York Swing. He' played in the bands of Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson and Benny Goodman. George T. Simon called him "the Fred Astaire of the piano". Phil Flanigan Phil Flanigan is highly respected both as a soloist and as an ensemble player. Bob Wilber has called him the "most melodic bass soloist in jazz." Phil acquired "the Lady's Head" bass in 2001, a legend in its own right as evinced by the list of previous owners: Bob Casey, Irv Manning, Red Balaban, and Bob Haggart.

Frankie Trumbauer Orchestra - Honeysuckle Rose (1931) Frankie (Tram) Trumbauer (May 30 ,1901 - June 11,1956) was one of the leading jazz saxophonists of the 1920s and 1930s. He played C melody saxophone, which in size is between an alto and tenor saxophone. He also played alto. Trumbauer is, more than anything, remembered for being the musical companion of Bix Beiderbecke, a companionship that produced some of the finest and most innovative jazz records of the late 1920s. In 1927, Trumbauer released a recording of "Singin' the Blues" in 1927, the classic originally recorded and released by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, which featured Bix Beiderbecke on cornet. He recruited Beiderbecke for Jean Goldkette's Victor Recording Orchestra, of which he became musical director. In the late 1920s he cut several popular sides with Beiderbecke, including the legendary "Singin' the Blues." After leaving Goldkette, he and Beiderbecke worked briefly for Adrian Rollini, then joined Paul Whiteman's band in 1927. He played with Whiteman for eight of the following nine years. He had a separate contract with OKeh Records from 1927 through 1930, he recorded some of the most legendary small group Jazz recordings of the era, usually including Beiderbecke until the April 30, 1929 session. In 1931 he organized a band in Chicago and recorded for Brunswick and then reorganized another in New York in 1932 and recorded for Columbia. During 1934-1936, while a member of Paul Whiteman's Orchestra, he made a series of recordings for Brunswick and Victor ...

"Honeysuckle Rose" with Tim Robinson I was in London recently and had the pleasure of playing with Tim Robinson -- -- one of my favorite YouTube gypsy jazzers! This is "Honeysuckle Rose," a\ Fats Waller tune that Django Reinhardt recorded.
Charlie Parker's Earliest Recording 1940 ~ Honeysuckle Rose / Body and Soul Recorded: Unknown Venue, Kansas City, Kansas Probably May 1940 Personnel: Charlie Parker - Alto Sax *This is probably the earliest known recording of Parker, and the only example of extended unaccompanied playing. The recordings were made by Clarence Davis, probably in May 1940. The tunes were spliced together. Both were incomplete. **Early sources gave 1937 as the recording date, but this seems unlikely given the quality of Parker's playing. Also, he quotes a snippet of a Roy Eldridge solo from a 1938 Chu Berry recording of "Body and Soul." ***The image is from the Francis Paudras Collection. Bird at Camarillo 1946/7
