Diet: Small shrimp and other crustacean. The female seahorse deposits eggs in the male "brood pouch." The male carries the eggs until the fry emerge. He expels fully developed miniature seahorses into the water. "Hippocampus" comes from the Ancient Greek hippos meaning "horse" and kampos meaning "sea monster".

  • How the Body Works : Center of Emotion and Memory How the Body Works Center of Emotion and Memory The limbic system, which is concerned with memory and learning, is also believed to be primarily involved in emotional responses. Emotions are the conscious result of the interaction between the activities of the cerebral cortex, the limbic system and the visceral organs of the body which produce specific physical changes. A number of theories have been postulated to explain this relationship between the body and mind. The emotional responses of any individual are, however, also a product of his knowledge and experience. The anatomy of the limbic system includes: The amygdaloid bodies, which contain both incoming and outgoing nerve fibers, and may help to regulate emotions, particularly agression. The fornix, a thick bundle of nerve fibers which forms the outgoing pathway from the hippocampus. The afferent fibers bring impulses into the dentate gyrus and the area of Ammon's horn. The dentate gyrus which lies within the hippocampal sulcus and although its function is not fully understood may relay impulses in the hippocampus. The subiculum is a region of cortex composed of up to six different cell layers and a multitude of nerve pathways. Ammon's horn, which merges with the subiculum and contains ovoid and pyramidal cells, the function of which are thought to be associated with memory. The efferent fibers, which carry information out from Ammon's horn to other regions of the brain. The hippocampus, which is composed of folded ...
  • Sea Horse (Hippocampus) Seahorses are any species belonging to the genus Hippocampus, which, in turn, belongs to the family Syngnathidae, which also includes pipefish and leafy sea dragons. There are over 47 species of seahorse, mainly found in shallow tropical and temperate waters throughout the world. They prefer to live in sheltered areas such as seagrass beds, coral reefs, or mangroves. Colonies have been found in European waters such as the Thames Estuary. From North America down to South America there are approximately four species, ranging from very small in size (dwarf seahorses are only about 2.5 cm / 1" long) to those much larger, found off the Pacific Coast of Central America (the foot-long Hippocampus ingens). Hippocampus erectus are larger seahorses found anywhere from Nova Scotia down to around Uruguay. Three different species of seahorse live in the Mediterranean Sea: Hippocampus hippocampus (long snout), Hippocampus brevirostris (short snout) and Hippocampus fuscus (immigrated from the Red Sea). These fish form territories, with males staying in about one square meter of their habitat while females range about one hundred times that area. They bob around in sea grass meadows, mangrove stands, and coral reefs where they are camouflaged by murky brown and grey patterns that blend into the sea grass backgrounds. During social moments or in unusual surroundings, seahorses turn bright colors. Source:

  • Differentiation of hippocampal neuron in cuture Hippocampal cells from WT embryos were cultured and maintained at 37°C with 5% CO2 inside an incubator. After 1 day, they were placed inside the videomicroscopy platform at 37°C with 5% CO2 (beginning of the film, time=0). Phase-contrast images were taken every 10 minutes to build the film. At time 0 of the film (1 day in culture), there are many neurites (white arrows) with similar lengths. They are highly dynamic, extending and retracting for short distances. One of these neurites became an axon (black arrow) that elongate faster and becames longer than the others. At 17:01 h of the film (1 day 17 hours of culture) the axon begins to branch while it continues to grow. Neurons sometimes establish connections with plural targets by axonal branches. While the primary axonal branch extends, the collateral branches appear to be suppressed in the same neuron. • Shrimp Dragonfly Hippocampus monster, animated Final animated image: Thats volume 9 of pixel art time! This monster is an odd mix of a shrimp, a hippocampus and a dragonfly. The game it is for has a resolution of 320X240 so that monster takes up most of the screen in it. This time around I go one step further by also recording the whole animation process. It takes quite a while. The whole work was over two days, started at around 11h pm on jan 19th, and finished at around 4-5PM on jan 20th, taking around 6 hours of work in all. I decided to fully animate this monster about halfway through the work, just after I had finished the wings... I had to remove the wings because of that decision: insect wings flap too fast and the details in them would have been confusing (not to mention a real pain to animate). It is a boss for a game I am working on. Maybe I will animate the death animation next or maybe ill move on to another beastie. I am not showing off most of the sprites I'm making these days because I don't really want to show too much of the game's content before its done, its an exploration-ey thing and all. Most of the fun comes from discovering the game while initially playing it. The song in the background is one of my all-time favorites, "Country graveyard" by Cherry Five (a band that will later be known as Goblin, they mostly made horror movie soundtracks). If you ever come across the self-titled album this song is from, definitely get it, its a real gem.

Seahorses have no teeth and no stomach. Food passes through their digestive systems so quickly, they must eat almost constantly to stay alive. *** Male seahorses are equipped with a brood pouch on their ventral, or front-facing, side. When mating, the female deposits her eggs into his pouch, and the male fertilizes them internally. He carries the eggs in his pouch until they hatch, then releases fully formed, miniature seahorses into the water. More info: or
