Preventing Hereditary Cancers Associated with BRCA1 or BRCA2 Gene Mutations Inheritance of a BRCA1/2 defect predicts such high breast cancer risks that prevention has not been widely studied. Hereditary BRCA1/2 gene mutations can cause cancer by impairing protective responses to some carcinogens. BRCA deficiencies probably amplify cancer risks from such opportunistic carcinogens. Some hereditary cancers might be preventable by compensating for the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations. For an audio version please see www.scivee.tv

Heredity And Evolution Check us out at Heredity is the passing of traits to offspring (from its parent or ancestors). This is the process by which an offspring cell or organism acquires or becomes predisposed to the characteristics of its parent cell or organism. Through heredity, variations exhibited by individuals can accumulate and cause a species to evolve. The study of heredity in biology is called genetics, which includes the field of epigenetics. Evolution is the change in the inherited traits of a population of organisms through successive generations. After a population splits into smaller groups, these groups evolve independently and may eventually diversify into new species. A nested hierarchy of anatomical and genetic similarities, geographical distribution of similar species and the fossil record indicate that all organisms are descended from a common ancestor through a long series of these divergent events, stretching back in a tree of life that has grown over the 3500 million years of life on Earth To distinguish biological evolution from other senses of the term "evolution" used outside of the field of biology, such as cultural evolution, technological evolution and the evolution of language, it is sometimes referred to as genetic evolution or organic evolution Evolution is the product of two opposing forces: processes that constantly introduce variation in traits, and processes that make particular variants become more common or rare. A trait is a particular ...

C3. The Heredity of "Racial" Traits Examines the heredity of those physical traits that assign Americans to the Black/White color line. Half the children of mixed parents inherit a skin tone between their parents, one-fourth come out darker than both, and one-fourth come out lighter than both. The lecture shows, with family photos, why African-American parents have White-looking kids more often than the reverse. For a text version of this topic, visit . Hereditary Cancer Awareness Week and National Previvor Day On Wednesday, September 15, 2010, in a unanimous show of support, the House of Representatives voted in favor of a House Resolution sponsored by Rep. Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) to designate the last week of September as National Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Week and the last Wednesday of the month as National Previvor Day. Here is a transcript of the remarks: Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz Floor Statement on H.Res. 1522 - Hereditary Breast & Ovarian Cancer Week September 15, 2010 Madame Speaker, I rise today to offer House Resolution 1522, expressing support for designation of the last week of September as National Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Week and the last Wednesday of September as National Previvor Day. Of all the cancers that affect women, roughly 10 percent of cases are caused by genetic factors. Though this percentage is relatively small, the risk for this group is huge. Women with hereditary risk factors for breast cancer carry an 85 percent lifetime risk of developing the disease. For ovarian cancer, most women have a 1.5 percent life-time chance of developing the disease. But for those with hereditary risk factors, that chance can be as high as 50 percent. As I learned almost three years ago, I am one of those women. Together with my colleagues and the inspirational organizations including Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE), Bright Pink, and the Young Survival Coalition, this resolution gives a voice to these women and brings awareness ...
