  • Hereditary Cancer Awareness Week and National Previvor Day On Wednesday, September 15, 2010, in a unanimous show of support, the House of Representatives voted in favor of a House Resolution sponsored by Rep. Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) to designate the last week of September as National Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Week and the last Wednesday of the month as National Previvor Day. Here is a transcript of the remarks: Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz Floor Statement on H.Res. 1522 - Hereditary Breast & Ovarian Cancer Week September 15, 2010 Madame Speaker, I rise today to offer House Resolution 1522, expressing support for designation of the last week of September as National Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Week and the last Wednesday of September as National Previvor Day. Of all the cancers that affect women, roughly 10 percent of cases are caused by genetic factors. Though this percentage is relatively small, the risk for this group is huge. Women with hereditary risk factors for breast cancer carry an 85 percent lifetime risk of developing the disease. For ovarian cancer, most women have a 1.5 percent life-time chance of developing the disease. But for those with hereditary risk factors, that chance can be as high as 50 percent. As I learned almost three years ago, I am one of those women. Together with my colleagues and the inspirational organizations including Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE), Bright Pink, and the Young Survival Coalition, this resolution gives a voice to these women and brings awareness ...

  • Genetic Mutation Animation: Excerpt from IN THE FAMILY IN THE FAMILY will air on POV, the award winning PBS series, October 1st, 2008. In the Family is a documentary film about predicting breast and ovarian cancer, the consequences of knowing, and the women who live with the risk. Beginning with her story of testing positive for the familial breast cancer mutation (BRCA), Filmmaker Joanna Rudnick chronicles the lives of several women currently undergoing the process of genetic testing -- following them from their decision to seek testing, through the testing process, and in the aftermath when they are coming to terms with the information they receive. These stories of the first generation of women to live with the knowledge that they are predisposed to a life-threatening disease will teach us what it means to survive a diagnosis of high risk without being consumed or defined by it. They will help us to understand the psychological, legal, ethical, cultural and social complexities of genetic testing for a mutation, which affects the entire family, for which there is no cure, and wherein the only treatments currently available involve enormous quality-of-life sacrifices.
  • Princess Cecilie of Greece and Denmark / Hereditary Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine Princess Cecilie of Greece and Denmark (Greek: Πριγκίπισσα Σεσίλια της Ελλάδας και Δανίας) (22 June 1911 16 November 1937) was the wife of Hereditary Grand Duke George Donatus of Hesse and the sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Cecilie was the third child and daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. She was born on 22 June 1911 at the summer estate of the Greek Royal Family at Tatoi, fif*** kilometres north of Athens. Although her given name was indeed Cecilie, she was known to her family as Cécile. On 16 November 1937, Georg Donatus, Cecilie, their two young sons, along with Georg's mother Grand Duchess Eleonore, left Darmstadt for London. The aeroplane hit a factory chimney near Ostend and crashed into flames, killing all those on board. Cecilie was eight months pregnant with her fourth child at the time of the crash, and the remains of her baby were found in the wreckage, indicating that Cecilie had gone into labour or suffered sufficient bodily trauma to result in birth. Cecilie was buried with her husband, two sons and the stillborn child in Darmstadt at the Rosenhöhe, the traditional burial place of the Hesse family. Cecilie's daughter Johanna was adopted by Prince Ludwig and Princess Margaret; she died two years later from meningitis and is buried with her parents and siblings.

  • Hereditary angioedema animation Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a little known disease that has a big impact on the people who suffer from it. The aim of this project was to tell the story of what it is like to suffer from HAE from the perspective of the patient whilst also incorporating 3D animation to show what is happening during a HAE attack. This presented unique challenges as we had to create transition shots between the video and the animation to give the impression of entering the patients body and also overlay animation onto the video so that the inside and outside of the patients body could be seen at the same time. The animation can now be viewed on a specialist HAE website for doctors and patients.

  • Color Blind Test - Online Color Blindness is mainly the result of hereditary deficient X chromosome. Because men only have 1 X chromosome, they are more likely to be color blind. Women have 2 X chromosomes, so both have to be defective for the woman to be color blind. This means that a woman could have 1 healthy X chromosome and 1 defective X chromosome and not be color blind, but she would be a carrier. Men always get the defective chromosome from their mothers since fathers only give Ys for men. Women on the other hand have to get the defective chromosome from both parents. This short color blind test can give you some preliminary results. For a much more involved test click on the following link -- bit.ly

  • Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangectasia - HHT Center of Excellence at UCLA Ginger-haired and freckled, Cheyann Cooper looks like any active 11-year-old girl. She likes to fish with her dad, play sports at school, and, as the youngest girl in a blended family of five siblings, enjoys a close relationship with her mom. But Cheyann also endures daily nosebleeds so heavy that they drench her clothes in blood. They can last anywhere from a couple of minutes to an hour. Like her mother and older brother, she suffers from a genetic disorder called hereditary hemorrhagic telangectasia, or HHT. Frequently misdiagnosed, HHT affects 1 in 5000 people, and many people unknowingly pass the gene on to their children. "My uncle's cousin died from a brain hemorrhage. And that's how the family found out that we have HHT" explained Stacy Cooper, Cheyann's mother. "That's when we could finally put a name to it. I'm sure that's what my grandfather also died of. But at the time, they didn't know what it was." Due to this faulty gene, many of Cheyann's blood vessels connect abnormally. Her arterial blood surges directly into her veins without first squeezing through tiny capillaries, which normally reduce the high pressure of arterial blood flow. In Cheyann's older relatives who also have the disorder, fragile red dots called telangiectasias form on the face and fingertips, where they can rupture and spurt fountains of blood. Her own grandfather requires regular blood transfusions and iron supplements to combat the rapid blood loss, which can result in anemia ...
