- Cattle Herd Feeding Time for a Grass-fed herd of British White Cattle A gentle herd of grass fed British White cattle in Colmesneil, Texas at feeding time. They're eating alfalfa placed in piles on a clean section of pasture. This winter we bought a stemmier lesser grade of alfalfa, and we started just putting it on the ground and found they cleaned it up very well and it helped to encourage them to travel throughout the pastures to find grazing. They've been getting an alfalfa ration three times a week throughout the winter and are in pretty good body condition. Generally, the thinner ones have weaned a fall calf in the past month or so. I walked amongst them and sat amongst them as I taped this feeding, and they didn't mind in the least -- no one kicked at me, ran from me, or minded my presence in the least, not what you will find in the herds of most cattle breeds.
- Penn State's Deer Research Center studies herd health options White tail deer studies at Penn State can be traced back to the 1920s. Throughout the years, a variety of research initiatives have focused on improvements in nutrition as well as studies in buck and doe growth, healthy reproduction cycles and humane repellents and fencing to protect forest regeneration. Current research at the facility includes a collaborative effort with the National Wildlife Research Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. This study focuses on the overpopulation of deer herds in more urban areas. For more information about deer research at Penn State, visit www.das.psu.edu online.
- Human Herd Leader Horse Impact- Imprinting causing Foal Rejection - Rick Gore Horsemanship Warning: taping interrupted so tape ends abruptly. Here I show how if done right, strong herds leaders can still act appropriately when led by a strong human leader. I then show how the herd changes when I leave as leadership role. I also discuss how foal rejection is at all time high due to human interference. I talk about how when people get too involved with the birthing process it makes the mom nervous and mom will reject the foal in order to get rid of the humans that will not leave. TIP: when filming with iPhone put phone in airplane mode so if you get a phone call while filming, it will not cut the filming off. - although I did not get to tie this together there is some good herd behavior and small communication so some may pick up some things about how horse talk in a herd. -
- AJ Starr 1 / Cattle Herd Health Improving herd health using SweetPro Feeds non-molasses, Vitamin, Mineral & Digestive aide blocks in cow calf pair ranching operations. Improving cattle digestive efficiency 25%. AJ Starr of Faith, SD along with his wife, Glenda, sons Brian & Jayde and their wives ranch 25000 acres of western SD prairie. They run around 800 mother cows, Angus/Limousine cross. AJ has been in this breed since 1972. He had always been looking for a year-round tub that was not too hard in winter or too soft in summer, yet had a full mineral package. About 4 years ago, he found SweetPro cattle blocks at a trade show and decided to give them a try. He was in and out of them, stopped and started and finally, liking what he was seeing decided to put the cows on it for a solid year. Hes been feeding it ever since! The first set of cattle he put on it, 1st calf heifers, had 80% breedback on the 1st heat cycle and 98.5 99% overall conception success with the first use. After two years on SweetPro, this had risen to 85% conception on the 1st heat cycle. The total herds conception rate was 98.5% - cows that actually gave birth to a calf. On SweetPro, the calf is up right away, full of vigor and by the time mom has licked it off, her cleanings are on the ground. This makes a significant difference in breedback success. Weaning weights are 50 60 lbs heavier when on SweetPro. Herd health on SweetPro blocks is excellent. 99.9% of foot rot and sore eyes is eliminated. AJs cows are all natural, dont use ...

- Tend to your "Micro - herds" SPREAD WORMS One of the best things I've grown to understand in taking care of plants...is that...taking care of the SOIL...and...tending..to the "mirco organisms" and "bacteria"..that can thrive there...the "MICRO HERDS"...will help the plants to flourish!! You become sort of a..shepherd..of mirco organsims...they're your flock! One of the ways ..we're using to tend to these MICROHERDS....is the use of RED WIGGLERS. I've been using a worm bin...and then spreading these RED WIGGLER variety of worms all around my garden. They're pretty much everywhere now!! I just keep tending to the BIN, and keeping the worm's fed in there...and then spread them where needed. HUGE..thanks to Toby Hemenway, for writing about this process so beautifully in his book, "Gaia's Garden." This book has become a daily reader for me...can't get enough of it...! One other book I'd recommend is: "Secrets of the Soil" by Tompkins and Bird. They dedicate a whole chapter, titled Microcosmos, explaining the power of these AMAZING micro organisms..and their benefits!! Cheers to the little ONES!

- Mares in heat how it changes Horses & Herd Behavior - Rick Gore Horsemanship Here I show how a mare in heat changes herd behavior and how being aware of this helps you understand horses better. In this video a mare comes up to me, flirts, nips and then presents herself to me, telling me she recognized me as the high horse and leader in the pasture. Also another gelding (probably proud cut) tries to mount the lead mare and the a higher gelding shows dominance and charges and disciplines the lower the gelding for trying to breed without "high horse breeding rights".

- Old Tradition: Hungarian Herds Head for Hills It could be a scene from hundreds of years ago. Traditional Hungarian herdsmen don the clothes of an age gone by as they mark the start of the summer season by parading their flocks. The herdsmen gathered to drive out their animals to the fields for the summer. The tradition goes back centuries and today is watched by hundreds of visitors every year. Some ancient breeds over here have seen a revival in recent years including Grey cattle -- a breed that Hungarian settlers are said to have driven with them when they came to the Carpathian Basin. The cattle along with buffalo, Hungarian sheep and pigs all graze on the Hortobagy National Park under the watchful eye of the herders. [Imre Nagy, Herdsman]: ''During this period we have to pay more attention to the flock. They need to learn their place and not to wander off, because if we are not firm with them now then we would have to call them all night during the summer as they would just keep wandering off.'' The herdsmen drive is part of the living traditions of the National Park and has seen some of the rarer breeds' numbers reviving after nearing extinction.
