  • Dog Dylan and Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: Early in her second life. This video was shot March 26th 2011, 3 days after Dylan hit the lowest point of her anemia on Tuesday afternoon/Wednesday morning (Mar 22/23). She has recovered a great deal after not being able to stand up or walk. I was a little too busy with Dylan to take any video since the day she was diagnosed with AIHA. She has minor brain damage from the anemia that has caused her to have less neural control over the muscles in her left side. She now bends and turns almost exclusively to the right (it gets somewhat better later). She was as low as you can go without oxygen and I thought for sure I was losing her Wednesday morning. I spent a lot of time in tears after picking her up off the ground after she tried to go out for a pee and fell earlier in wee hours of the morning. You can see in this video, unlike any others later, how her face is so tired. her eyes look like she is falling asleep, her ears are always held low and she can't keep her head up. You can also see how she stumbles she she tries to walk through the crap on the ground. She would continue to get stronger for a few weeks until the effects of high dose prednisone took her ability to walk and stand away again. In that case, her face and attention was always alert and her eyes were never like in this video. It is this picture of what anemia was like (and especially earlier too) that clearly differentiates any time later in her progression as not due to anemia and rather due to muscle loss and hind end paralysis ...
  • Dog Dylan: Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia and High Dose Prednisone For more videos go to This is what happened to Dylan after 5 weeks of taking high dose prednisone to treat her Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia. She cannot stand on her own and I am using a harness and a towel as a sling under her belly together to carry and assist her. The combination makes it easier to control both ends separately and also helps keep the towel from slipping off (fold it into the harness where there is now a lot of extra room and hold the 2 together). It also allows me to give her some control over where she goes. When I got her as a pup she had been wild for 2 months and was a very independently minded dog. Manipulating her physically, even when she is weak, is met with resistance. Token resistance and a common method of trying to provoke fear to keep danger away. She never bites to hurt, just bars her teeth, growls and snarls and and snaps at me. I have had my hands and face in her mouth when she is doing this to prove to her that I am in charge and helping her whether she wants my help or not, as it is the only way she is getting up. She cannot always get her feet forward enough onto her pads, so in this video you see me fix her back foot so she is standing on the pads instead of the top. This is because she has lost so much muscle and the imbalance of strength makes it harder to do things with the weaker muscle. Pulling the leg forward is not as strong as pushing on it to propel them or stand. She also now turns better to the right and ...

  • Blood Agar Bacterial Growth Medium: Alpha, Beta & Gamma Hemolysis This video provides photos and narrator interpretation of Blood Agar (BAP) specialized bacterial growth medium. Examples of sterile BAP as well as plates with growth of normal flora (gamma and alpha hemolytic bacteria) are contrasted with the presence of beta hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes. This video provides complete information on how to determine if bacteria exhibiting beta hemolysis on BAP are Streptococcus pyogenes. There are other types of bacteria that are beta hemolytic, however S. pyogenes will grow in punctiform (tiny round) creamy white colonies. S. pyogenes is a Gram-positive, beta hemolytic bacteria. There are also Gram-negative beta hemolytic bacteria, but their colony morphology is different than that of S. pyogenes. B-hemolytic Gram-negatives grow in comparatively large colonies that are round, flat and greyish or neutral in color. There will also not typically be many Gram-negative bacteria present in a throat sample (the type of BAP clinical sample shown in this video). By Tami (Guy) Port, Chief Executive Nerd at . • Dog Dylan the "Miracle Dog" - Beating Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA) For more videos go to This is Dog Dylan on June 16, 2011, a few days before her 3 month anniversary of her second life as an AIHA Survivor. Prednisone saved her life from her Immune system attacking her own red blood cells, but then ravaged her body of all its muscle until she could not stand or walk. I have been aggressively reducing prednisone to save her life from it s deadly effects while still trying to make sure AIHA does not return (balancing life between death from AIHA on one side and death from prednisone on the other). I am extremely careful after each reduction to observe her very closely and make sure I am certain there is no anemia. I also want to know what the reduction helps in her behavior and symptoms and that the level of prednisone and the effect has stabilized before considering another reduction. All along I have felt that that prednisone was as much the enemy as AIHA and as a result Dylan is doing much better. She has been standing since May 25th after being diagnosed March 19th. Her initial dose of prednisone was about 2 mg per pound per day (90 mg, 2 doses per day). Her prednisone was down to 15 mg/day (split over 2 doses) on every second day when she first started to stand. She is now on 10mg (2 X 5 Mg) every second day. I actually started seeing improvements like sitting up to eat a little earlier when we first started skipping one 7.5 mg dose every second day. Dylan weighed probably 47 pounds prior to diagnosis, slipped down ...
  • Hemolysis Risk when treating ITP patients with WinRho SDF Baxter Healthcare and Cangene Corporation are notifying healthcare professionals that intravascular hemolysis (IVH), which can be fatal, has occurred in patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) treated with WinRho SDF, an intravenous immune globulin product. Intravascular hemolysis can lead to severe anemia, renal failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and multi-system organ failure. Elderly patients with co-morbid conditions appear to be at higher risk for developing acute hemolytic reactions. Here are the recommendations that now appear in the boxed warning for this product: • Closely monitor patients in a healthcare setting for at least eight hours after administering WinRho SDF. But be aware that IVH can occur even after that time. • Perform a baseline dipstick urinalysis. Repeat this at two and four hours after administration, and at the end of the monitoring period. • Instruct patients to watch for symptoms of IVH, including back pain, shaking chills, fever, discolored urine and hematuria. • If you suspect IVH, confirm this with laboratory tests, including plasma hemoglobin, haptoglobin, LDH, direct and indirect plasma bilirubin, and dipstick urinalysis. Finally, as a reminder, it is important to monitor all patients receiving intravenous immune globulin products for signs and symptoms of hemolysis, and to perform confimatory lab tests if they occur. • E. coli and Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) Attorney Fred Pritzker ( ) discusses hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) ( ), a severe illness caused by E. coli, usually E. coli O157:H7 ( ). Shiga toxins produced by the E. coli can affect the red blood cells, causing them to be misshapen. When this happens, those misshapen blood cells can get clogged in the glomeruli, tiny vessels in the kidneys. This can block the filtration system in the kidneys that allows waste products to be removed from the body. This can lead to kidney failure and a host of other life threatening complications, including stroke, heart attack and hypertension.
