  • The Harvest (2011) Official HD Trailer THE HARVEST/LA COSECHA is the story of the children who work 12-14 hour days, 7 days a week to pick the food that we eat. These children are not toiling in the fields in some far away land. They are working here, in our back yard, in America. Every year more than 400000 migrant child farmworkers in the US journey from their homes traveling from the scorching sun of the Texas onion fields to the winter snows of the Michigan apple orchards, from the heat of the Florida tomato fields to the damp cherry trees in Oregon. These children are American citizens. All are working to help their families survive while sacrificing the birthright of childhood: play; stability; school. The film profiles three of them as they work through the 2009-10 harvests. Whose families will be "lucky" enough to get work? Which families will be separated? Which will get sick or injured? Will there be enough work to sustain them? Will any manage to keep their dreams alive? The film follows these children as they follow the crops they harvest, their lives governed by climate, demand, trade, and the greater economy. The verite footage of the children and their year of toil is augmented by the children having the chance to speak for themselves about their lives. THE HARVEST/LA COSECHA boasts unparalleled access to life on these farms across the nation and gives us the opportunity to connect with these children who live these unthinkable lives to feed us, and more importantly to them, to feed their ...

  • Olive harvest reaps animosity in West Bank Israeli authorities are giving Palestinian olive growers less time to harvest their crops this year, saying they want to protect them from settler violence and vandalism. For families in the West Bank, whose livelihoods depend on the sale of olives and oil, picking the olives before they are ripe can seriously decrease their value. Jewish families in nearby settlements claim that harvests have been used as cover for "terrorist activity" and that the Israeli military needs to oversee them. But many Palestinian farmers see violence only on the other side, when settlers burn and chop down their orchards, forcing them to replant again and again. Al Jazeera's Charles Stratford reports from the West Bank.

  • Energy Harvesting - Power Everywhere VLAB Presents: Energy Harvesting - Power Everywhere Three factors are reaching a tipping point to open up new vistas in Energy Harvesting: cheaper, smaller, long-lasting batteries; Super low power CPUs and digital signal processors; and innovations in the energy harvesting devices themselves. Benefits range from the convenience of eliminating wiring clutter and frequent battery replacement, to the enabling of new applications where prohibitive wiring or battery costs are avoided altogether. The cost of finding and replacing batteries at frequent intervals for small devices such as wireless sensors and building & industrial controls is a challenge. Scavenging energy from the environment is becoming more attractive. There are over 500 products based on perpetually powered technologies ranging from simple light switches, which are powered by simply pressing the switch, to more complex devices that measure the integrity of the rotating blades on military helicopters. It is estimated that this segment of the market alone will yield an approximate $1.2B opportunity by 2014. Growth in renewable energy itself will drive increased demand for energy storage capacity. Batteries represent about a $39B market, which will grow to $50B over the next five years; with rechargeable batteries leading the way. Energy harvesters are one approach in charging these batteries. The military, security and aerospace industries with a projected market potential of over $1B, heavily rely on ...

  • CROP TIGER 30 TERRA TRAC CLAAS harvesting Mahindra & Mahindra ,TATA,Launched in India in 1993, the CROP TIGER 30 TERRA TRAC has revolutionized the way of paddy harvesting. Being a compact and light weight combine harvester equipped with reiable rubber tracks, it is the ideal harvesting machine for wet paddy fields. Beside quick and easy harvest, the CROP TIGER 30 TERRA TRAC, also provides excellent grain quality and negligible losses. With a width of 2.1 m, this cutterbar makes the CROP TIGER ideal for small paddy fields, where the turning radius of the machine is one of the most important factors. Spring type reel tines and the table auger with retractable fingers optimize the crop flow towards the feeder housing after cutting and thus resulting in a smooth crop movement into the threshing area. To prevent the damage of cutterbar components during overload conditions, a safety arrangement in the form of slip clutch mechanism is provided. For different crop conditions, the reel can be adjusted horizontally to maintain an uniform crop feeding to the knife section. The belt drive of the knife section ensures minimum vibrations and a smooth operation. Threshing mechanism Every grain counts. Equipped with revolutionary Tangential Axial Flow threshing and separation mechanism, CROP TIGER 30 terra trac provides excellent grain quality with minimum losses. Each grain is acted upon by centrifugal forces for entire two and a half revolutions, which results in excellent threshing efficiency and negligible grain breakage ...

  • Bags Help Farmers Protect Harvests From Air and Insects I'mAlex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from | http Airtight plastic bags can help farmers protect their harvests without the use of harmful chemicals. These bags are designed to keep air out of crops in storage. They are a simple way to fight insects and keep food fresh. Ten countries in West and Central Africa are involved in a project to improve the storage of cowpeas, also known as black-eyed peas. Farmers can lose much of the harvest to insects called bruchids. These grow from egg to adult in a few weeks and then lay forty to sixty more eggs. They can destroy the whole harvest within months. Farmers can sell their crop immediately. But selling at harvest time means more competition and lower prices. Or they can use pesticides to kill the bugs. But crop scientist Dieudonne Baributsa says that is also risky. He said farmers may misuse or overuse the pesticide. Mr. Baributsa is a researcher at Purdue University in the American state of Indiana. The project is called PICS, for Purdue Improved Cowpea Storage. Mr. Baributsa says the storage bags are thick enough that any insects already in the cowpeas will die from a lack of oxygen. The lack of air will also help prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi that can ruin the harvest. The bags cost about two dollars each. Mr. Baributsa says that is not much, especially if it means farmers can wait long enough to get a better price for their crop. The bags are produced locally ...
