Ray's a Laugh did not actually include Nedlo's name among the credits, nor indeed that of Charlie Olden (his real name). Nedlo/Olden was , by 1949, calling himself Ted Ray - and that was how he billed himself for his new radio series. Ray's a Laugh was, in the main, a domestic comedy. Ray's wife was played by Australian, Kitty Bluett. Fred Yule played his brother-in-law. Patricia Hayes also appeared as did Kenneth Connor as Sidney Mincing. In later series Ted had left the Cannon Enquiry Agency and joined The Daily Bugle as a reporter. Jack Watson and Charles Leno joined the cast and new characters included Mrs Dipper and Roger Curfew the paying guest with songs by John Hanson and the King's Men. Another early member of the cast was Peter Sellers, then only twenty-three and billing himself as 'an impressionist', who appeared as Soppy, a small boy who got ticked off by the nation's watchdogs for his catchphrase, 'Just like your big red conk!' and also as a strange lady called Crystal Jollibottom ('Stop it you saucebox!' she would cry in crazy soprano). Laidman Browne, as Ray's boss 'Mr. Trumble'; Pat Coombs as 'Ursula Prune', Charles Leno and Graham Stark were also present and Percy Edwards, the animal impersonator, played Gregory the chicken. Then there was the glamour girl who would do anything, but 'Not until after six-o ...

  • "Moving on up" Kickthrough's photos around Phnom Penh, Cambodia A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Phnom Penh, Cambodia by TravelPod blogger Kickthrough titled "Moving on up...". TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Kickthrough's travel blog entry: "After a mad scramble to get Sarah a new passport so she could enter Cambodia, we were off to meet our mom. We were excited for air conditioning, nice beds, free food...and of course to see her! We arrived at the Pavilion around 5 pm and had a very happy reunion. Our hotel was very nice, and had a tropical pool set in the entry. That night we went out for Cambodia food, and tried a classic dish called "fish amok." It is a souffle like steamed curry of fish, lemongrass and coconut cream. We also tried Cambodian BBQ, and got a large conical grill at our table to cook our own meat. It was all delicious. The next day we went to the Royal Palace and the silver Pagoda. Then, our day took a sad turn with a visit to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. This was a former highschool used as the notorious secret prison S-21 under the Khmer Rouge regime. Of the estimated 17000 men, women and children who were imprisoned there, only 12 survivors are known. Our tour guide was herself a survivor of the forced relocations from Phenom Penh by the Khmer Rouge, and her father and brother had both been killed under the regime. After the museum, we went out to the killing fields outside of Phenom Penh, where thousands of bodies have been found. The site is called Choeung Ek and it is today the site ...

  • Crossroads '82: Glenda Stubs Her Toe On Arthur's Bowling Bag Kath and Glenda are thrilled when Kath is offered the housekeeper's post at the Crossroads Motel. Arthur is outraged when Glenda stubs her toe on his bowling bag. The character of Glenda Brownlow originally turned up as a young runaway at the motel in 1976. Her parents were briefly featured in one storyline, but at the end of 1979 they moved to King's Oak, thus becoming fully fledged, permanent Crossroads characters. Their son Ron put in his first appearance at the beginning of 1980. Glenda was not keen on having her family around initially, she didn't want Arthur and Kath laying down rules for her, but she quickly settled down to become an amazingly true-to-life frump, meeting Kevin Banks in 1980, marrying him in 1981, and having a test tube baby, Katy Louise, in 1983. Glenda was fond of moaning about her aching feet at the best of times. Lynette McMorrough, who made a fabulous job of playing Glenda, said that the character drove her "potty" at times. The Brownlows were sometimes dubbed "The Glums" because of the number of unhappy storylines they suffered. But I also found them to be a very natural family group, very well acted. Fondly remembered.

  • The Glums - Sketch 11 (S07E11, 21/01/1954) The Glums - Sketch 11 (S07E011, 21/01/1954) At the end of Series 6 Joy Nicholls left 'Take It From Here' to return to her native New Zealand and was replaced by Alma Cogan for the singing and June Whitfield for the comedy sketches. From Series 7 then we were also introduced to The Glum family as an antidote the wholesome clean-living families prevalent at the time such as Lyons family (Life With the Lyons) and The Huggetts (Jack Warner and Kathleen Harrison). These sketches were written by Frank Muir and Denis Norden and ran through every episode (bar one, the 10th Anniversary show on 26th March 1958) until the end of TIFH in 1960 after Series 13. As well as featuring in short segments throughout episodes they also had a couple of whole 30-minute episodes dedicated to the family. For Series 7, The Glums appear as part of a regular sketch called 'Talking Point' in which the family would discuss the theme of that weeks' episode of Take It From Here. After this they would just appear as a regular sketch with no particular theme and the sketches would grow from 4 minutes to 15 minutes and occasionally the whole episode. Jimmy Edwards was Pa Glum, head of the family, Mrs Glum is sometimes heard banging about upstairs but never speaks. • Local author cooks with Rachael When author Rhoda Janzen took a really bad week and turned it into a memoir, she caught the attention of a lot of people. This week she begins a book tour with a stop at the Grand Rapids Public Library Thursday at 7pm. She will read from her book, "Mennonite in a Little Black Dress" and take questions from the audience. Today she talks about the book - and shares one of her family's recipes with Rachael. She says in her house, they were always called Kwarkkuchen, sometimes spelled Quarkkuchen. According to Rhoda, some times eastern Mennos call them by another name altogether: Glums Koki. She remarks, "You'd think we Mennonites could get together on our weird foods." She goes on to explain, "Kwark is a dry hoop cheese not unlike the French fromage frais--not aged, and very light. I grew up making these with the traditional dry-curd cottage cheese (hoop cheese), which is getting harder to find these days. I always had luck at Russian delis when I lived in LA, but since I have moved to a smaller town, I have had to improvise." That's where the alternate version made with regular cottage cheese came up. Rhoda says the dry-hoop-cheese version is better, but the cottage-cheese version is also delicious, accessible, and inexpensive. The traditonal version comes from The Mennonite Treasury of Recipes: Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups dry-curd cottage cheese 3 eggs 1/2 cup flour 1 teaspoon salt Combine cottage cheese and eggs; mix well. Add flour and salt and stir until combined. Drop from ...

  • Meet The Huggetts - Loser Pays (1 of 3) Meet The Huggetts - Loser Pays ??/09/1957 (Series 5) Jack Warner & Kathleen Harrison - Part 1 of 3 Meet the Huggetts with Film Stars Jack Warner and Kathleen Harrison as the average British Working Class family featured in the 1947 film 'Holiday Camp' and were successful enough to spin-off into a trilogy of films; 'Here Come The Huggetts', 'Vote For Huggett' & 'The Huggetts Abroad'. In Holiday Camp they had a son (played by Peter Hammond) and a daughter Jane (who was Widowed and had young son) but in the Trilogy that followed Jane was played by another actress and no longer had a son and the Huggetts had two other daughters played by Susan Shaw and Petula Clark. Peter Hammond returned but as Susan's boyfriend. The success of these films showing the trials and tribulations of a normal working family in the Post-War era also spun off to this BBC Radio series which ran for 9 Series over 9 years from 1953 to 1961. This time Susan and Petula (the children kept their real first names) were dropped again and the Huggetts had a young son Bobby. Jane still featured as the daughter played by several actresses starting with Vera Day. The park started to breed the endangered African Elephant. They started with 11 elephants and now there are over 300. The guidebook says that you would be "unlucky to visit and not see an elephant." When we arrived at the park we had several options. There was a self drive where we would be able to drive through the game preserver. There was a self drive with a guide and there was also a guided Safari on raised vehicles. We decided to go with the cheapest option: the self drive. We were worried about Chico's offroading skills, but we were assured that even the unpaved roads were in excellent condition. We turned down offers of a guide, convinced we would be able to do it ourselves. We started the drive looking hard. Soon, we saw a safari vehicle behind us. We knew that the safari vehicles had radios connected to each other and would radio when an animal was spotted. We tried to follow closely, but not too closely so they would catch onto our game. After spotting Kudu, Warthogs and other animals before the safari vehicle, we decided we could do just fine on our own. We were hoping to see some of the big 5- which are the 5 animals everyone hopes to see on their safari. These are Elephants, Lions, Water Buffalo ...

  • Audiobook: Take It from Here by Dennis Norden, Frank Muir Buy full audiobook: List of award-winning books/audiobook: Four episodes from the much-loved radio show starring Dick Bentley, Jimmy Edwards, June Whitfield, and Wallas Eaton Take It from Here was one of the most influential radio shows of all time, sweeping in a new era of comedy and introducing an enduring pair of writers: bright young things Frank Muir and Denis Norden. Their literate scripts, and the madcap adventures of Dick Bentley, "Professor" Jimmy Edwards, and June Whitfield, ensured 11 years of classic capers. Who could forget the barrage of puns, the Take It from Here "Oscar"-winning screen skits, and the hilarious weekly reports on the marathon engagement of the drippy Ron and the doting Eth of The Glums? "Oh, Ron!" and the inevitable response 'Oh, Eth!' became a despairing catchphrase that swept the land, and The Glums' popularity continued in two television series. Now we can laugh again at their timeless humour in these four fantastic episodes from 1958. Oh, bliss!

If I were Kate, I would dump William for treating me like a bit of arm candy, when I have made it perfectly clear I want commitment. And as if to pour salt into the wound William drags Kate along to all these friends weddings. Some say the way William treats Kate is what she deserves. But what does that say about William!!
