It has earlyer been engraved and is here being gilded, using the technique of water gilding, a old and traditional way of gilding. After applying the gold it is then carefully polished to reach its full potential - shining gold. Then this frame is to undergo a final phase to recieve a nice patina, but that is another story....

Third Style painting, as Professor Kleiner demonstrates, is characterized by departure from the perspectival vistas and panoramas of the Second Style toward an attenuation of architectural elements and a respect for the inherent flatness of the wall. The Third Style remains popular until the middle of the first century AD, when it is replaced by the Fourth Style of Roman painting; both styles coexist in the Domus Aurea, the luxurious pleasure palace of the emperor Nero in downtown Rome. Water Gilding - White Gold over Black Clay Water gilding 12k white gold leaf over black clay. C&J Frame number A561. Thin coats of gliders liquor (water, alcohol and glue) are brushed onto the frame. The gold leaf is applied on top of this water using a gilders tip. As the water evaporates the leaf will adhere to the frame. Once dry it is ready for burnishing with agate stones.

CBH Oil gilding the case bands More harpsichord stuff @ www.hpschd.nu Carey Beebe demonstrating oil gilding of the harpsichord case bands. The case bands are made a generous 35mm wide. The case has been painted and varnished, so is ready for the marking out. The exact placement of the bands is determined for the best optical effect. A simple marking gauge with a 2B lead is used to delimit the band, except for the cheek and bentside/tail joints which must be measured and ruled by hand. The area is masked using 18mm Scotch® Fine Line Tape 218. A uniform coat of gold size is applied using a piece of buckskin. After some time, the size can be checked for readiness. When it barely pulls the little hairs on the back of a finger, the gold can be applied without drowning. Here, genuine 23K gold leaf from a 37mm wide roll is used. The roll is unwound while the gold is lightly pressed onto the tacky size. A light brushing with a soft camelhair mop then pushes surplus leaf onto any remaining bare areas of the almost-dry size and excess flakes are retained in a box. A fingernail creasing the backing paper helps ensure gold coverage and a sharp line at the edge of the tape. The tape can be removed directly. The next day, the bands are lightly polished with a cotton wool ball to remove any flake residue (not shown). Nothing goes on top of the leaf. The cast metal soundboard rose and its surrounding chamfer cut in the soundboard were the only areas covered with gold leaf in the original Flemish harpsichords. The soundboard has already been shellacked, and a preliminary coat of size applied to the chamfer and allowed to dry. A uniform coat of size is applied to the rose and chamfer using a small brush. After some time, the size can be checked for readiness When it barely pulls the little hairs on the back of a finger, the gold can be applied without drowning. Here, genuine 23K gold leaf from a booklet is used. The first leaf is dropped onto the rose. A light brushing with a soft camelhair mop pushes the excess leaf onto the tacky size. A second leaf is dropped and brushed likewise. Any areas where the size has dried too quickly—particularly in the endgrain of the soundboard chamfer—can be lightly recoated with size, and the scraps of gold used to complete coverage. Excess gold is retained in a box for future use. A sharp delineation between the gilded chamfer and the flat of the soundboard can be achieved with by careful scraping any overflow of size with a small chisel. The next day, the rose is lightly polished with a cotton wool ball to remove any flake residue, and the instrument is ready for the soundboard decoration. The elegant seven-leg Louis XV table stand is one of the highlights of the harpsichord. The legs have been painted and varnished. Each leg is rested in the cradle and gilded in turn. Using a sable brush, gold size is applied first to the carved donkey foot and acanthus leaf. For the leg stripes and grooves, a piece of buckskin is used for a uniform coat of size. After some time, the size can be checked for readiness. When it barely pulls the little hairs on the back of a finger, the gold can be applied without drowning. Here, genuine 23K gold leaf is used. A leaf is dropped from the booklet onto the foot and acanthus, and given a light brushing with a soft camelhair mop. The leg stripes and grooves are gilded using a 25mm wide roll. The roll is unwound while the gold is lightly pressed onto the tacky size. A light brushing with a soft camelhair mop then pushes surplus leaf onto any remaining bare areas of the almost-dry size and excess flakes are retained in a box. Bare areas can be touched up with a 12mm wide roll. A fingernail creasing the backing paper helps ensure full coverage of gold in the groove. Overflow on the painted leg can be removed with another piece of leather lightly dampened with White Spirit. Detail around the acanthus is cleaned with a sharpened bamboo skewer.
