  • Rendering Effective Route Maps: Improving Usability Through Generalization Authors: Maneesh Agrawala, Chris Stolte Abstract: Route maps, which depict a path from one location to another, have emerged as one of the most popular applications on the Web. Current computer-generated route maps, however, are often very difficult to use. In this paper we present a set of cartographic generalization techniques specifically designed to improve the usability of route maps. Our generalization techniques are based both on cognitive psychology research studying how route maps are used and on an ***ysis of the generalizations commonly found in handdrawn route maps. We describe algorithmic implementations of these generalization techniques within LineDrive, a real-time system for automatically designing and rendering route maps. Feedback from over 2200 users indicates that almost all believe LineDrive maps are preferable to using standard computer-generated route maps alone. Try LineDrive for your own routes at Mappoint Driving Directions.

  • What Is The Phenomenon Of "Generalization" In Hypnosis? The phenomenon of generalization relates to the companion benefits that come as a side effect of the primary purpose. When one enters into hypnosis or meditation - even for a specific purpose, as for instance to improve their study skills or to control their appetite - they also become clearer, wiser, calmer, and improve their vital signs. As a metaphor, realize this... One cannot learn to play the piano or the guitar without becoming more sensitive to music in general. One cannot learn to swim without improving their health. One cannot learn a foreign language without becoming more culturally sensitive.

  • Quantum stochastic walks: A generalization of classical rand We introduce the quantum stochastic walk (QSW), which determines the evolution of generalized quantum mechanical walk on a graph that obeys a quantum stochastic equation of motion. Using an axiomatic approach, we specify the rules for all possible quantum, classical and quantum-stochastic transitions of a vertex as defined from its connectivity. We show how the family of possible QSW encompasses both the classical random walk (CRW) and the quantum walks (QW) as special cases, but also includes more general probability distributions.

Abstract: We will review algorithm-Z, and show how it is used in proving the q-binomial theorem bijectively. Then we will describe a generalization with one additional parameter, and show how this is used in proving the q-Gauss summation formula bijectively. If time allows, we will discuss possibilities for future research. This is joint work with Ae Ja Yee (Penn State).

  • Realistic game design Vs. Game Generalization! There's a whole world of game designers and inventors. After a lot of blood, sweat, and laughter they end up with great products... For me to generalize! It isn't that I don't like creativity, I just recognize that using computers to provide the infinite combinatorial horsepower we can get more games quicker, much like the internet gives us something better than any book. You can write a book, or you could promote the idea of applying all existing plots to all existing styles with an optional choose-your-own-adventure flavor that revolutionizes writing (and pound the idea into the heads of innocent youtube subscribers). Which would you do. Tell Dawn how much you like her will to bring the world to reason here: She's an atheist singer/songwriter artist with some sweet ***y tattoos and plenty of heart.

  • Regina Spektor - Silly Eye Color Generalizations live at Irving Plaza, NYC on 23/03/10 [11/21] Here's Regina Spektor performing at Irving Plaza, NYC on March 23, 2010. It's a benefit concert for the Haiti Relief Fund by Doctors Without Borders. Watching Regina Perform at a smaller venue as opposed to her three most recent concerts in the city (Beacon Theatre, Radio City Music Hall, and Carnegie Hall) is kind of a treat. Her performance tonight was held at an intimate venue, with of course, a sold-out crowd, where she seemed more relaxed and interacted quite enthusiastically with. She did a stellar job at showcasing her superb vocals, and of course, being the master of the grand piano. Regina's one of those musicians who can get away with anything because of her charm. Forgetting the lyrics and cursing the hell out of it almost always makes me want it to happen in at least one song for every concert. Haha. She did a beautiful cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. I'm glad the crowd went silent, otherwise I would been able to cut ab**ch that dared shout. Kidding. Okay. Not. It was a very heartfelt performance and you could see her pour every inch of herself in that song. There were three special guests who are respectively talented in their genre as well. They were Nicole Atkins, Only Son (Jack Dishel), and Shara Warden. Normally, I wouldn't be thrilled that somebody else will take time off of Regina's performance, but no one in that room can deny the powerful performances these special guests gave. Their vocals blew me away. Really. Anyway, enough blabbing. Here's ...

  • Generalization of Single-Center Projections Using Projection Tile Screens (GRAPP 2008) This video demonstrates an image-based approach to efficiently generate multiple non-planar projections of arbitrary 3D scenes in real-time. The creation of projections such as panorama or fisheye views has a number of possible applications, eg, in geovirtual environments and in augmented reality. Our rendering technique is based on dynamically created cube map textures in combination with shader programs that calculate the specific projections. Based on this principle, different planar as well as non-planar projections can be customized and combined. The technique can be applied within a single rendering pass, is easy to implement, and exploits the capability of modern programmable graphics hardware completely.
