  • Moment of Frivolity in Ulyanovsk Arrived in Lenin's birthplace, the very Soviet-looking town of Ulyanovsk at around 10pm and, as in so many Russian towns, the area around the train station at night resembled a scene from Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now". But instead of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" blaring into the landscape, I was greeted by white noise of a railway station radio playing Russian eurobeat with a chainsaw edge the ever-present taxi drivers asking too much (400 roubles) for a ride into town (more like 200 roubles at that time of night). The late-night arrival made the rest of that night short. The next day I took a bleary-eyed mid-morning walk along ulitsa Goncharova. The house in which the Russian writer Ivan Goncharov grew up (take note!) is currently closed for restoration. I reached the museum director on the phone and she told me it would open again in summer 2012, with an enlarged exhibition that covers three floors instead of the current two. Strangely, this rather bleak-looking Soviet-styled town was beginning to feel vibrant and had an earthy, urban charm. I was sceptical the night before when my taxi driver - born in Ulyanovsk - praised Ulyanovsk and said he didn't want to live anywhere else on earth. After the walk along ulitsa Goncharova to check out a few things (Hilton hotel being built, but that'll take a year or so still), I took a break outside Lenin's Memorial Centre...

  • Frivolity Rag (Ron O'Dell) played by Tom Brier I composed this rag one morning in 2004, about 12 hours after composing another rag which I called "Priority Rag". I woke up with the first strain of this in my head so thought the opposite of having priorities would be to spend time on frivolous pursuits, thus the title came to mind immediately. The first rag was so named because I wrote it the day that the 1965 mod for Grand Prix Legends was released, after years of development. However, instead of installing it and going racing, I ended up writing music, which I decided should take priority.
